View Full Version : Reasons to be cheerful

...I have no work lined up for the new year and have been aiming at this scenario for a long while now...my 'builders' house is going to get the treatment that I have been providing for other peoples houses for the last 30-40 years...I will be very broke and wont be able to race bikes or do the frivolous things like , spend, and when I have got our house up to the point where the promises made to my wife and myself over those years are fulfilled, I am semi retiring to my shed and helping my wife in her business...this makes me feel a little more than cheerful, more like ecstatic...
The great dream that all colonists have when they set out - "The American dream!" (aka The Kiwi Dream) - See what happened to it right here!

So there's still HOPE! - A reason to be cheerful? - You betcha! :niceone: Happy New Year! :2thumbsup

Feeling good feels sooooooo good. What more of a reason do you need.
If you are waiting for something to feel cheerful about, the conditional nature of that vibration will fade once the reason you found to be cheerful about subsides.
Make the " feeling cheerful" the goal, and the rest will fall into place naturally. You will then begin to see a whole lot more to be cheerful about. :msn-wink:
Today I decide to feel good, no matter what.........:Punk::Punk:

...retirement, even with a probing, 'semi' prefixing it, was a nightmare...my wife does not need a hand in her biz, so I'm back where I was prior to even contemplating life without other cunts in it...it was a totally illusory assumption on my part to think that I could get away from life as we know it by withdrawing my presence...they don't go away, they just change their appearance...my 350/F is two hours away from being ready, the Velo is at the clinicians and I suddenly got the urge to get my T20 up to scratch...it's amazing what a bit of bullshit, family and a continuous reign of fucking about at home does for the soul...I'm also very broke and need to play with my bikes...Alex Macdonald and Dave Gorst also made me feel like a soft cunt when I watched the three rounds of the Nationals down here...I've got the urge to keep on rockin...

...lost the pad off the brake shoe and got my wheel really fucking hot when it lodged itself between the other pad and the drum...I hate fucking shoes and springs and seized, handbrake adjusted, brake fixes and all that seized on drum shit...and bleed fucking nipples that take four hours and prayers to Satan to release, and shit like that...
...specially when 168 hours in a week is all you have and it ain't enough to do the shit that you wanna do, let alone the fucking things that you don't wanna do...well for once in my life I did the fucking lot in a day without any major fuckups that happen when you're out in the country and a fucked three dollar seal is two and a half hours and 120 k out of the day...
...well none of that shit happened...it all flowed like I actually knew what I was doing and was a mechanic or whatever those people who have a big red toolbox are...I had to replace a piston in the slave cylinder because just when everything was going like clockwork I must have smirked or smiled or something, enough to tweak the black faeries nipples and cause a reaction...I reacted back by tearing the seal on the perfectly good piston with my pliers trying to manhandle that fucking ridiculously tensile top spring between the shoes out...but guess what, the black faerie can get fucked 'cos I just happened to have a spare slave cylinder hanging about...fuck you black faerie, my brakes are fixed and you never got me... :bleh:

I'm not very imaginative. The stuff that I can think of is stuff I've already done but wouldn't have thought to put on a list. Getting to buy an old lady's air fare to see her daughter one last time.
Or should have been on someone else's list. The wife getting to cuddle a baby elephant.
Meh, can't be bad if I don't have any unfulfilled life-long ambitions can it?
Still. Maybe I can hang on until they start doing Lunar tours.

Good if you can manage it. Guess in the long run that's what later life choices boil down to, don't it? Playing the cards you've got to try to balance lifestyle choices before retirement with lifestyle options after.
Would help we knew how long the game has to run, but that would be too easy, and easy is never all that satisfactory.

'Er indoors grew some habaneros in her glasshouse a couple of years ago. Bastard things grew huge, and stayed strangely dark. Well, mostly black actually.
The daughter added her usual four to some sauce she traditionally makes, and ended up binning the lot. Waaayyyy over the top. Remade with two stripped out chillies the result was nice. For an adherent of things chilli. Never seen anything like it, even over-ripe they were savage.

Sounds good, I grew some a few years back, quite small ones but it was a bumper crop. Grew them in a big pot and moved it around to maximize sun. Fed them on tomato food. Awesomely hot, had them on everything, and didn't get a cold for three years.

First off today, that didn't make me too cheerful but the lovely people that helped me did. My own fuck up, coming around a corner at some lights, dropping down hill and I cocked it up. Bike slid out.
A guy helped get the bike up and off the road. A lady made sure I was fine and went so far as to force a sweet drink on me to stave off shock.
Thanks to both of them :)
Bike seems to be okay, a little coolant leaked through an overflow. Exhaust, wing mirror, instrument cluster and brake leaver all scraped up a little but nothing looks to be too bad. Gear all did its job, bike was on my foot but my boots held up and hip/knee armour took all the knock and slide.

maybe where you are...Down here, Couplands (best chain in the SI) put the price of their light fruit cake up when the Xmas packaging went on. Then when it was sold out, they said, No more until the dark fruit cake is sold...Idiots.
I'd suspect an accountant asked why sales were down...so the light is back - but the buggers haven't put the price back..
At least that's a reason to be cheerful as I do some of my best work fuelled by their light fruit cake...

I spent a fantastically therapeutic day recommissioning a '72 114 Mercedes 230 that has been in storage for a long time.
What a lovely "built up to a standard, not down to a price" quality piece of machinery, that was built to be repaired effortlessly & forever.
These are the cars that will still be running in 100 years.

Some years back i was at a workshop in ChCh which specialised in odd shit, mainly rally cars and continentals...
They had a 60's merc there for a service and tune. i was walking round it and commented on the door and window rubbers - mint.
I was told that the standard Merc dealers service was supposed to include coating the rubbers with lanolin grease.
If these are the cars that will be around, they'll probably still have the original body rubber parts...

Wind blowing us along the coast and then dropping when we needed to paddle back up for another slide. Lots of half eaten soft baits, grrrrr before the brother in law bagged an 11lb yellowtail kingfish. Good incentive to get out more often :wari: Great day.

Yeah .. I'd be happy about that too ..
Went into town this morning to go on a guided tour of the Pop-up Globe Theatre. Took the bus and as we get on at the first in-bound stop of the inner zone the buses are always quite full. This morning it was a fully seated load so we had to stand. Not for long... before the bus had moved off from the stop two tertiary students stood up and offered us their seats - not that standing is a problem.

Basically cooked it like lamb shanks. Tasty enough. plus a bit of DIY butchery.
Free quinces, equals quince paste. Bit time consuming but easy to make and so tasty.

Yeah, they can move fast when there's an incentive...
My one found a couple of wasp's nests the other day - the hard way. She was mowing around the fruit trees in an effort to guilt me into getting the rideon out and doing the grass...So i rank it as self inflicted.
Poisoned the nests and there's not a wasp to be seen now. But as it's rained, the grass is too wet to mow anyway...I'm cheerful.

Thanks Old Slider and congrats to you too. The only visible mark on me is her thumbprint on my forehead  . She's still the best pillion I've ever had on any of my bikes. She drew the line on coming on the back of my Street Triple as it would have crippled her and ditto for the current GSX-S 1000. I'm quite happy about that arrangement :innocent:
I envy you, my girl swore (in several ways) that she would never get on the back of a bike again after a tortuous trip from Wanganui to Wellington on the TS 250, pouring rain, extremely cold etc, that was in 1976, lol. some how managed to do the same when she asked to come hunting, took her into some really steep papa type country, wet and slippery, she never asked to come hunting again.

Last couple of weeks have been frustrating, with work and extra days biting into my bike maintenance time. One bike needed warrant and rego, the other had a serious swingarm problem so I took a day off today to make a start..
Took the suzi 600 in to VTNZ for a warrant, which a little bit to my surprise it flew through, and then slapped a rego on it, all legal beagle again whew.
Went home to make a start on the Big Bandit swingarm, which I had been advised by a couple mechanics would take them 6-8 hours $400 to $600 labour, bearings and bushes costing an arm and a leg too at $160. Being of part Scottish descent I decided rain or not, gravel driveway be damned, it was getting pulled out today and here is the part to be thankful for:
Upon inspection there was a hairline fracture in the tubular housing for the bearings, which obviouslt over many years had allowed water ingress, rusting all to hell and gone. It was a goner as far as a quick and dirty bearing job.
The good part is the potential cost of an arm and a leg was alleviated by Wayne at BikeBusters parcelling up a replacement swingarm with all good internals to bolt on for the princely sum of $90. So easy to do business with him I spent my last few dollars until payday (thanks VTNZ and LTSA)
Thankful I found the crack, thankful it wasn't already committed to a mechanic to do the work, and thankful Wayne at Bike Busters enjoys his job so much.
Cheerful that it will all be back on the road this weekend again. The 600 is fun, but I have missed the big bike.:msn-wink:

Hummmm, what year bandy is she?
Nice to find real people out there and good on you for telling someone about him.
Its a Mk1 1996. 61K on odo. Picked it up a few weeks ago and knew steering head and swingarm needed attention when I inspected it. I missed the crack, so did the WOF tester, but to be fair last owner must have bought it like that, and its hidden on the side facing the engine so you cannot see it. Nuts around the suspension linkages were virgin never touched or marked by spanners or sockets, till today. Someone's been doing wheelies and stoppies by the condition of the notched head bearings when I pulled them out.:angry2:
Another thing to be cheerful about was the glorious Kwaka 900 that pulled into VTNZ behind me. Needed a clean but absolutely original unmodified and lovely condition, even the paintwork. It was another highlight of my day chatting to that fellow, he allowed me to paw over it with a fine tooth comb, it was just as magnificent as I remember them.......
And if anyone hasn't heard about them, ......Bikebusters motorcycle wreckers, Ngaruawahia.

What would be deserved would be making good the cost of replacing the product with the alternate of the owner's choice.
In most cases that'd be roughly the cost of a ground-up rebuild.
Plus damages.
And costs.
It's way more than they're worth, so why wouldn't you just tell the lawyers to stay home and divvy up the net worth of the company between the affected owners.
It's the sort of thing I expect the commerce commission to do, as opposed to fining that Orks builder for daring to import Gib at less than half the price Winstone Wallboards were selling their native product.
