...the whole weekend was as about as good as it could get...a big thanks to you and all the others who made it happen...:wari:

I only take the minutes and fix BMW's, its the tireless work of the Race Committee, scrutineers, Marshals and all the others who do the sign ins, run the BBQ and so on.

It was a great weekend thanks to all you South Islands from coming up :woohoo:

After four days at the international festival of speed at Sydney Motorsport park, running Jay Lawrence on the Carl Cox Katana 1100 & a tired old GSX1100 (the same one he won the event on last year) as a wet bike, we came away with first place, ahead of Troy Corser & a number of other respectable names.
Bring on the Manx TT with the same combo later this year.
I can't believe I get paid to do this shit.

The Manx is a done deal, no asking required.
I will be running a Katana for Jay with some fairly major support from Carl Cox. it will be built by Team Classic Suzuki GB & run 18 inch wheels.
Jay & I are to operate the Team Classic built, Suzuki UK owned bike completely independently in our own space at the Manx, with support from team CSGB, who's main focus will be the Michael Dunlop campaign.

Take your running gear as spares - and pull the cams out of the old motor. You know where to time them now and I guarantee the Suzuki GB motor won't be as good as yours.
Given that the Aussies bent over backwards to allow out of period pom bikes in the International Challenge thing, any chance of running the Kat to kiwi rules in the IOM ? Worth asking.

Reason to be cheerful.
Taking the bikes to the USA again this year - about 2 months worth this time. Just finished editing the GPS tracks and bought the air tickets.
Up into Canada and maybe a couple of nights in Mexico. Taking in the air racing at Reno and maybe even going for a look at the Big Boy restoration at the Union Pacific workshops in Cheyenne.
Meeting up with some folk that we met on the Himalaya trip last year.
Itching to get started.

Actually, luck has fk all to do with it. More to do with hard work and careful long term planning. Also a willingness to spend some money before I'm too old to really enjoy it.

As for Thursday, it's a bit far from Whakatane Mark.

Is that screwdriver holding the table up ? Bit casual if it is.....can do better.

I fired up my new workshop heater today in the now much more open plan workshop....raised the temp 5 deg C in 15 minutes on half throttle.
Much better than the old pot belly stove could achieve. Working there in winter looks much more attractive.

Noo, that's my magnetic stick thingy lying on the floor.
It's one of Robbies old workshop lifts, weighs a ton. You would need a f ing big screwdriver to hold that thing up, even without a bike on it.

I know the style of lift well. Alan Bland down here used to import them. Once the cheap Chinese ones arrived it took him literally years to get shot of the last ones.

Now here's a reason to be cheerful.
I suggested to the owner of the 0W01 today, that the Mike Ron was the only non original part on the bike & it kind of ruined it a bit & what would he think about finding a good used standard muffler on e bay.
He gestured to a huge pile of various boxes in the corner of the workshop & assured me that the original muffler came with the bike & if I would like to go digging, it's in there somewhere.:2thumbsup

Mmmh, once you remove the Micron, it becomes just another stock OW. This is why I'm always keen to see if a bike should stay as found.
If for example, it's been photographed with someone interesting or been to somewhere special with that can on, you lose that history...

Museums around the world are full of dead stock bikes....boring.

Edit - I can quote an example. Mate has a 250 which is built from a Mk4 KTT Velocette. It's got an early 50's Triumph fork and a homemade swingarm conversion. It's got Cust history like that. We agreed when I went through it that although putting it back to a standard KTT was quite feasible and would increase it's value enormously, we wouldn't do it because the history would be lost. I can see that when he falls off the perch, it'll probably go to Auckland and go back to a std KTT.....

I did ponder getting on the net by putting my leathers/boots and helmet on and riding a lime scoot down Queen St footpath shouting at all

When Dan Stauffer won in 2010 he was the first newcomer to win the Main Race in 41 years, it'll be interesting, don't forget shane richardson who got third last year on a 600 from memory and set the fastest ever lap for an F2 bike, not a lap record as RHM is separate though.

yeah some are keen others not so, i took Stauffer into paeroa the first year, we arrived at the hairpin, drve to the pits, he chatted with brian bernard, asked if he wanted brian to jump in to which he declined, did a full lap then back to the pits and to his accom, then went and won the next day, was cool to be part of along the journey of motorcycling.

I may be a drama queen as my wife claims - but you'd have thought draining two litres of fluid off a lung in about 3 minutes flat might have triggered an alarm.
All that happened was that the drain pot reached capacity and started trying to drown me. Everyone incl me thought I was having a heart attack so I passed out - and woke up to a cleared ward and the full crash crew looking at me. Impressive. Even the mobile X ray got there.

Got the bike back this morning. What a difference. Always had them on my own bikes but they didn't fit them on the work bikes as the 6 volt grips were hard to come by. Normal is relative to the size of your budget, the length of the races you're doing - and whether the bike is a purpose built race unit.
If you've grown up watching grandad strip his manx Norton down to the bare frame between meetings, then had to do the same when you raced TZ's, normal is the complete strip.
If you grew up building and racing 750 WSB stuff, you're not really used to that as it became largely unnecessary.
Do the pre-season prep right and for a NZ season, I'd be surprised if between race strips are needed.

We had a Starship fundraiser at 'downs in conjunction with Barfoot & Thompson.
After I heard Tracey rip Pinky down the front straight a couple of times, I felt the urge to chuck my gear on & wait in line for a go.
My instructions "just hit it" she was on it straight out of the gate. it felt right, natural & really good, much like me working my old job, I knew exactly what to do, & what was going to happen next.

So I'll be living on a large cruising yacht berthed in Hobart marina in order to explore something called Dark Mofo which is spread out over the Hobart waterfront.

And then I'll be stealing his CB450 for a day or two to explore a bit further afield. Weather depending.

Just finished looking at insurance options for the old motorbikes, and found one that knocks $500/year of the cost for both. I was looking at getting rid of one, but that actually covers the bills for it for a year, so maybe it might get to stay a bit longer

The old car is off to the garage to get brakes sorted today, so that should be wof/reg happy on the road shortly.

If the weather plays ball and the car is sorted, I might be able to take a different vehicle to work every day next week, after all they say variety is the spice of life.

Well done it’s never easy to make that choice. It’s a human failing that we often lose by being scared of risk and spend far too much money/time protecting our current position for no improvement.

Years ago a truckie colleague did the maths on what hiring a new guy cost the company. Averaging out all the rollovers/damaged freight events etc he came up with a figure of $5000 per new worker in 90’s money.
He articulated the idea they should pay a little more to get competent staff to stay.
We got a pay rise that year and started to stem the tide of driver turnover that was well into double figures annually.

Know your value and don’t settle for less. We are in an age of opportunity employment wise

Congratulations, and you were certainly a gentlemen in giving your previous employer a chance to retain you - actually mean that with sincerity.
After surviving 15 odd redundancy rounds over my IT career, when I left my final IT position in the late 90's, I caught myself feeling guilty. I then remembered fuck, as soon as one is deemed surplus, they just boot ya. I left guilt free.

Are there other instances of people in that party shoplifting that have been covered up? No? then don't conflate her actions with that of the party.

"playing the mental health card". She came from a difficult background, trained as a lawyer, was an MP earning $160k a year - what else is this except a symptom of an underlying issue? I feel sorry for her more than anything. Let me put it to you another way and since you're so very fond of the ad hominem argument: Whats your coping mechanism for stress and trauma, son? Alcohol and spousal abuse? When did you stop beating your wife?

She has owned her actions. The day after she flew into the country she torpedoed her career and present life.

I would rather vote green than for any of the collection of rabble, chancers, private school oafs, bullies and self enrichening cunts that are currently in charge. They at least have some principles.

Nah. The haters don't need formalities.

This is sad. The first refugee to make it into Parliament resigns in disgrace. I read this morning that she wasn't a real refugee because her family arrived here in a 'plane. What were they supposed to do, walk?

Naturally there was much of this on Twitter and I got into a short "discussion" when I commented that it was pointless because we didn't actually know anything at the time and we wouldn't until the shop(s), the Police, or the woman herself said something. So she has resigned and now we know something. There are still questions but again, we'll just have to wait.

As for this being indicative of the morals of the Greens, I seem to recall the case of Jenny "trading while insolvent" Shipley.

Nice strawman job, and showing me your from extreme left without telling me your from extreme left.
My coping mechanism is accepting life isn’t fair, never has been and never will be. Make the best of whatever happens and move on. Oh and take the motorbike out for a ride to reset 😀
Could you imagine the animal kingdom of they all sat around feeling sad that the lions eat steak every night while birds forage for worms. If they sat around feeling sorry for themselves 90% of species would keel over and die. Oh wait that’s what really happened with evolution.
Hhhmmm maybe humans ought to pay attention there….

Has she actually been convicted of anything yet?

After the mess the labour greens coalition made of policing and justice it won’t happen fast.
When your reputation is an essential tool of your trade you don’t confess/resign without a fight. Could you imagine the screams of injustice and “ mostly peaceful protests” that would unleash in support of it turned out mistaken identity or false accusation etc????

99% of public figures that end up in trouble resign to protect there party or business from the fallout, about only exception is Trump.

well. Labour/Greens are not runnng Justice so they can't have any influence there, however NactFirst ARE currently responsible for justice so will do everything possible to affect the outcome. Also "mainly peaceful protect" seems to be a specialty of the far right wingnuts. As far as reputation goes, the entire Green party is facing damage from this, so her resignation may be,as you say, to protect the party, as she herself has no rep left to count on. Unlike Judith Collins with regards to her husband and Orivida or the swamp kauri exports fake export certificates, etc.

The Greens seek to destroy nearly every important part of the lives of 99% of members on here. That is freedom of travel, freedom to choose your mode of transport, freedom to choose your mode of propulsion, freedom to have independent access to reliable cheap heating energy.
The only way a green society works is with massive regulation at great expense to the majority.

She didnÂ’t fall from grace she literally leaped. I guess that $160k parliamentary salary made for good ballast.

I canÂ’t help but think she stole because actually paying for high price boutique fashion during a time of poverty for many of her voters would almost be as equal a scandal. LetÂ’s not forget Tuku MorganÂ’s $80 boxer pants (back when $80 was worth something)

IÂ’ll always cheer when a theif is caughtÂ… a few more years and sheÂ’d be stealing obscure commuter bikes from downtown CBD car parks.

Things are about to get entertaining. James Shaw has resigned from Greens after quietly waiting for the scandal over his qualifications to die down.i have nothing against him (except his policies lol) but he was about the last normal person in that bunch of rabble who could string together a coherent sentence.
I’m cheerful at the prospect that this lot will now self destruct as they lean more extremist and lose popular appeal.

Cheerful for having a govt willing to invest in the future of all our people.

$24 million of govt money to help in work that Mike King started off via charity donations.
On a side note being results driven the Nats say this delivers a 5:1 benefit to cost ratio. You have to ask why previous govt wasn’t interested in funding this when they were happy to rain cash on other stuff.

“Gumboot Friday: $24 million funding for free youth counselling

The government’s $24 million funding to I am Hope over four years is a crucial lifeline for countless young people facing mental health challenges, its founder Mike King says.

The money will go towards the youth mental health charity's Gumboot Friday, which provides free counselling services to young New Zealanders.

“This funding will allow us to onboard over 50 ethnically more diverse counsellors, including those from Indian, African, Latin American, North American, Asian, and Middle Eastern backgrounds," King said.

“Additionally, we aim to include a higher proportion of Māori and Pacifica counsellors to expand our reach and better serve our diverse communities."

Kingsaid the situation was worsening, and highlighted the urgency of addressing the escalating mental health crisis among young people.

“The soaring demand for youth mental health services, with Gumboot Friday experiencing a staggering 500% increase in just two years, is a stark reminder that we cannot afford to slow down.”

In 2021, Gumboot Friday funded 550 sessions monthly at a cost of $78,000.

Now, it finances over 3,400 free sessions each month at a cost of $510,000, with this number expected to grow as awareness of the service increases.

King said that this funding is just the beginning.

“The work doesn’t end here; it only begins,” he said. “Grassroots and community organisations such as the Mental Health Foundation and Voices
of Hope are also doing valuable work and need our support.”

Gumboot Friday was calling for greater collaboration between the government, community organisations, and individuals to tackle the mental health crisis head-on.

“It’s time to break down bureaucratic barriers, come together, and prioritise getting real help to those in need,” King said.

“Together, we can create a New Zealand where every young person has access to the support they deserve.””

Time for some optimism.

We have no post war landmines in our nation.
We are pretty tolerant in that most people can air their views without physical harm
We have no reason to seek refugee status.
We can safely drink (for most part) running water from any stream/river.
We are welcome in pretty much every other nation on earth if we travel.
We can ride our motorbikes in any direction for couple hours and find somewhere semi decent for a steak and bourbon.

While that was once true, it just isn't now. In my youth and young manhood I spent a fair bit of time in the wilds of the south island kayaking. We didnt think twice and drank water from whatever river we were in. as the 90's clocked over to the 2000's we stopped. Basically the onslaught of dairy farming meant it was too chancy. One of my friends got cryptospiridium and was really fucking ill. That was either a paddling trip or an adventure race.

The flatter the countryside and the more intensely developed it is, the less you should be drinking the water.

Anyway, its a very good example of how profits are privatised and costs are socialised, particularly environmental costs. I could go on. I would say you would get the idea but let's face it, you're not that guy.
