Strangely, many years ago I went on a fishing charter to the Lachlan Banks in HB with Terry Lay on the old Christina. There were 10 of us fishing & we all caught a shit-load of Groper, Bass & Trumpeter. Terry thanked us all for not bringing bananas. Then I pulled out the fruit part of my lunch. You guessed it. Perhaps it depends on which direction the banana bends?

The story goes, so I hear, and if you want to know...
In the days of the banana boats (I wonder why they were called that...) transporting bananas (oh, yeah, that might have something to do with it...) through the Carribean, the heat would get to the bananas and they would go off fairly quickly. If a reasonable wave hit, the load of rotting bananas would shift and capsize the boat, usually resulting on loss of life...which is pretty bad luck really, I suppose...hence the superstition surrounding bananas on boats...or so I heard...
