First Ride!!

First road ride that is. I've done it on the farm and did the prac test, but just got my offical class 6 learners this morning so took my new FXR 150 out for her maiden voyage (in my hands anyway). I could not get more confused with the braking and changing of gears and blipping of throttle and squeezin' of clutch, everything is in most unfamiliar places, but damn I love ridin'. I can heel-toe a car (for those of you who also like cages) but a bike is a new game. I'm too keen.

I've also got an NSR 250 that I'm fixin' up. Got it because it needed fixing up, wanted to learn about the machinery, but I didn't quite know what it was capable of at that point, so I got the FXR as well. She's not quite going yet, new engine in, just waiting on a reed gasket and then it's just putting all the fluids in, but I think I'll use her as a track bike. I learnt to drive by racing go-karts, so I figure what better way to learn to ride than by getting into some racing. Nothing better for learning control I feel. Might just do some Pukekohe open days for now, and then get into it proper once I know this NSR will go without exploding. Or I'll sell it off and get a bucket racer!! Total.

Anyway, thought I should post something on this site now I can officially ride. I'm all a quiver.

Ok. we all have to start somewhere but if your still just getting used to being on a bike then take heed with that NSR. They are one of the 250s I think shouldn't be allowed on a Learner licence.
(well for a learner rider anyway)

the start of a long and enjoyable life my friend! welcome along. Building bikes is fun, i did it with my zxr. Good idea about taking the NSR to the track, wouldnt put it on the road myself, but if you can sell it for a good few bob then i'd say definitely get a bucket.

Also remember to get some good gear (gloves, jacket, pants and boots) it will save you a lot of pain in the long run should anything happen. its amazing how much little accidents can hurt ya.

Be wary of that NSR for the first couple of months of riding... they are NOT learner friendly to say the least. One of my good mates had two of his mates get 2 stroke 250 sportbikes for first ever bikes - they sadly both came back in caskets in a couple of months....

Good to see you are a drummer, there are a few of us on here so you should get on well :) What sort of style do you mainly play? I'm a faster metal type drummer (my best/favourite style) but play most of the other styles fine.

FXR150 is great for fuel mileage, NSR is good for the track.... nice setup if you have self control on the NSR for a while.

The riding thing will come natural soon enough. Do a course to give you an extra edge on both skill & fast tracking the Licence & you'll learn a lot through racing too, they have training & novice days to help upskill you.

Yeah I'll definately be learnin' the ropes on the FXR before I even try the NSR out, and even then I'll be a grandma. Well, for the first lap or so at least.

And I play mostly blues rock and funk, Led Zeppelin, Neil Young etc and James Brown, Parliament Funkadelic type stuff. But same old story, I'll play anything really. Nothing quite like diversity.

Welcome matey, ride safe and don't be surprised if you get a bit of flak for having an NSR. They are secretly jelous :) That being said, the NSR is not a forgiving bike and I wouldn't have one anywhere near a learner. But also, good on ya for having a FXR to learn on.

Managed to squeeze in two fairly decent rides today in between the rain, goin' super cautious in the slippery patches but gettin' the hang of it. I even managed several U-turns using all of a single lane, put my foot down one time but it was all good after that. A did some slalom through the white lines in a deserted no exit. And the gear changes are gettin' infinitely easier, and emergency brakin' with. Now all I need is a bucket racer...
