Just got a GN250 and plan on learning what I can while I got it so I can move up in the world practically and physically. It runs fine but I'd like to learn how to care for her, like keeping the chain clean and tight, basically every single maintenance job I can learn so I got skills to transfer to my next bike.

Also is there a detailed list of what mods could possibly harm a WOF? All I've done so far is removed all the rear factory lights so I have an excuse to replace them to something less ugly. That also allows me to sand and treat the rust on the frame.

In terms of rust maintenance, I noticed some on the rear flywheel/sprocket/ whatever the hell its called. I've also read that upgrading the sprocket (at front) to 39 teeth will give the 250 a bit more grunt in 4th/5th gear so could I possibly just replace both?

Since my bike is '05 some of the parts are shit, as whole bike is made in china and stainless steel stuffs has traces of other stuff thus RUST. So to help its resale value, which will happen when I get experienced enough for an upgrade, I'm looking at what I can do. But I'm scared of just taking things apart as I have no idea what I'm doing. Is there anywhere I can learn? Even online?

Also. Have any of you upgraded the headlight to LED? should I bother? Noticed a cruiser with two LED spots left and right of the main headlight to improve visibility. That's pretty much all I'll use them for as I can't see shit at night whether in a car or bike or attempting to walk.

Wouldn't bother doing any mods yet, you may find you out grow it fairly quickly and move onto something a little better.
But in the meantime..........http://www.dansmc.com/mc_repaircourse.htm :Punk::Punk:

Oh and welcome. :niceone:

you're a beautiful man!

and, being that you have a vagina, there will be 100 jaffas to drool on you/ talk shit about bikes.

salt. get some, and take everything with a grain of.\

unstuck will post dansmc

duc will tell you about rusty shit

noone gives a fuck about gearing (swapping sprockets on) a GN.

get some good tools and find someone with a penis who isn't interested in putting it in you. you will learn much about all things mechanical.

VIRM for WOF stuff.

Putting stuff back together, easy, just remember how you pulled it apart <_< :bleh:

Not worth an HID, you need the proper reflector or you'll blind the shit out of everyone/get fined/fail WOF's. Maybe some cheap LED's off aliexpress or dhgate. Good chance to tinker with some wiring/learn a bit about it.

You can get good high/low LED headlights now too (H4 etc) for under $100, ish, but just a better bulb full stop can make a world of difference and add some LED's either side.

fucking wicked site thanks unstuck!!

so I assume my next best bet is to join a club that has regular maintenance days so I can get experience? yuh tis good being a girl when you can get things done by smiling and waving. But there is the unfortunate side of fending off unwanted stuff when guys DO NOT get the hint. :violin:

I'm gonna get some black BBQ spray to do the engine, is there anything I could possibly fill up with spray that will inhibit its amazing running power? ie the socket can handle some overspray?

And if I'm not replacing the rear sprocket, should I wire brush and spray it in place or take off chain give it a clean (looks like it needs it) and THEN attack? and would that be in situ or should I take it off completely?

thanks for the HID light info.. doesn't sound worth it in this case. I've already got enough wiring experience thanks to the rear lights I already cut off - the tail light was made so cheap that you need to cut the wire to get it off anyway... But as I said it's so ugly. I don't mind the look of the GNs apart from the rear indicators, tail light and factory mirrors. but all that is a matter of like $50 and a soldering iron, one thing I DO know how to deal with.

Also forgot to ask about seals, mine look cracked and dry from up close but still seal, are they easy / cheap to replace? Or do I just wait until they go / sell before then :innocent:

find the two threads for the Auckland groups and ask around most people are more than happy to share knowledge with someone willing to listen and learn.

also youtube can teach you the basic terminology. but nothing beats the knowledge of someone knowledgeable.
turn off you details if you haven't already switch your gender to none of your business on the settings page and add the second poster (not unstuck hes funny) to ignore.
Also I you feel in anyway you have been abused, hit the report post at the bottom right the triangle.

I think you will find that will only encourage assmissle. he's not only limited to humans either.

The tail light wiring will have connector? You should not have had to cut them, but anyway, get a set of bullet connectors and a crimping tool (about $20 warehouse supercheap etc)

Google is your friend! The internet is full of people asking questions and knowlegable people giving answers
the best way to learn is to do! Find a guide, follow it => take photos as you go so you have references when it comes to putting things back together.
chances are you'll outgrow a gn pretty quick unless youre just riding around town, so stick to the basics instead of concentrating on mods..learn to polish paint and anything metal! When it comes to selling it people aint gonna see your regular oil changes or perfectly tentioned chain but everyone can appreciate a bike that shines.

Heh. Does anyone ever notice how restrained the female species is compared to males? Like I don't think I've ever come across girls makin strange comments when someone indirectly mentions they are male!!

I can polish and shine, that part is easy - I'm also a house painter so know my attack weaponry when it comes to prep - though I did learn some great tools from youtube re shining! ie windex for the chrome (works great) tin foil for all surface rust (great for chrome at least) and paint stripper on engine cover.

Thanks for the advice re groups, met a couple of the guys that go to NASS and they showed me how to corner better  and also helped me check out engine condition etc.

I have too much air going to engine (so I am told by the guys who know what they are doing), and judging by the cracks in the carb > cylinder "pipe" that could be my issue.

My chain got replaced 6mths ago but not my sprockets which DEFS need a replace, can I keep the "new" chain and just buy sprockets? both sprockets combo is $50 off aliexpress - compared to cycletreads' combo including chain for $150..

Ok off to play with sandpaper and corners. Not at the same time!!

fine steel wool for uncoated bare alloy and solvol autosol or similar
Pledge works on paint work smells nice too. A prewash coating with Handy Andy applied with a paintbrush works well on road grime grease great around spokes etc.

False economy not to replace chain at same time an old chain will wear out the sprocket faster a decent set of sprockets will out last a few chains.
Same re cheap stuff from China, you might be lucky... but by the time you freight it here and if then it turns out to be crap or doesn't fit?

Sometimes it has been observed when women are in large groups that your observation doesn't hold true...its the fairer sex generally is just a bit more subtle.......:msn-wink:

which wimmenz do you know?? Shit, put two or more in a room with dan carter or sbw and its panties-off, i'd lick that for a dollar slut-o'clock.

Dont buy chinese shit. Ever.
You can check a chain for wear. If its been looked after it shouldnt be fucked in 6mo.

And fix airleaks.
And theyd be called carb boots. A dime a dozen for gn.

Maybe you should try going to a mainly female site, like a sewing or a craft group, and mention that you are male. then see what happens.

On your idea of increasing the front sprocket to 39 teeth. You could try it, but there are just a couple of small points to consider. First off I think you would struggle to get a 39 tooth sprocket to fit in space designed for only 15 teeth, and if you could you find it difficult to make a standing start on the flat and almost impossible on a hill.

However decreasing the rear sprocket from 41 to 39 teeth will give you a slightly higher potential top speed, and make it harder to get there. With only 20 HP available at the crankshaft (much less at the rear wheel) I believe you should stick with the original sprocket size.
