I was not sure whre to put this, but our options are Quickly running out, so here we go.

We are on a christmas hollisay trip and our cluch cable broke on the Von Road. AA got us to Te Anau, but no workshop is open today. I need something for a 2008 Transalp or at lest one of those universal / fix it one whith a bolt that clamps the cable? The cable came clean off the bolt on the leaver side.

Anyone got a spare around that could get here via currier or otherwise?

the cable has a little "knob" at the end that sits in the clutch leaver. the "knob" is a cylinder with the cable going in at mid height from the side. the cable broke right behind that bolt. that means that the cable is only 5mm shorter and might szill be used, and I have seen these bolts as spare parts with a hole for the clutch cable and a screw going in from the top to trap it. otherwise it would need to be the whole thing, witch the "channel" as well, since the clutch side has a diffrent knob crimped on.

sorry if I dont make to much sense with the propper nouns here, english is not my native language and I dont have the manual on my ipad :)

possible to shift without clutch...
shifting up lot easier then shifting down...
pushbike brake cable. ??
old car bonnet release cable......?
jury rig pull cable for clutch. ?..
came back once from cold kiwi with broken accelerator cable....
not best ride...but covered few hundred clicks..

But if your the brave sort you could ride it to gore with no clutch.:msn-wink:

you'd be surprised how far you can get without a clutch if you can just get going.rode my zx10r over 50km home from work through auckland traffic the other day after my clutch cable snapped in the exact same spot. as for trying to fix what you've got you could try finding someone who could drill out the old lead lump.poke the cable back through then soldier or melt the lump back onto the cable.may get you another days riding to somewhere with parts or a better fix up

trouble with riding without clutch is that we are 2 up and are carrying 60kg of gear. we had a boatride book in Milford Sound already so I just handed over another $150 for a darn bus ride ...

Any way you could attach a spring loaded set of vice grips (if you can beg some to borrow off a local) to the end of cable attach them to the bars and use to get you going.

From a standing start, put it in gear with the engine switched off & start the engine, shifting without the clutch shouldn't be difficult at all. I'm not entirely sure how you are stranded, it would only slow me down by a couple of minutes while I contemplated my options.

tried that at one point, but the wee little starte motor did not sound happy with trying to move the 450 kg that is the loaded bike. did not want to leave gear or partner out on some farm, so we discarded that option.

in other news: turns out I do have the manual available after all. need to find honda spare part 22870-MFF-D01 on boxing day and then get it here. Easy, right?

From memory there's a reasonable size truck company near Te Anau with stock trucks, maybe try there in the morning and ask nicely, they will have tools for Africa out in the wops there to fix there own stuff.
Failing that get some JB weld (Epoxy) from garage or shop and glue the fecker in place, rough but get you home.

BTW if cable length is an issue you can prob get a little from the clutch end adjuster or shuffle the lever mount along the bar. Also you could just get any old bolt that will fit and drill to make your own cable clamp like that pic above.
Good luck.
BTW I have a spare set of GSXR cables I bought when my bike was fairly new, meant to route them alongside ready to use like some of the racers do, never got around to it.... 110,000km and original cables still going ok.

we are out of Te Anau for the boatride between 7:30 am and about 5 pm. we are staying in the holliday park - we would like to leave / move on ASAP as I have to be back in Wellington on the 5th for work. trying to salvage as much from our holiday as possible.

my idea now is to give dealers and parts shops calls tomorrow and see if someone either has one of the universial ones or even the spare (should anyone answer at all). Then overnight it to the friendly AA garage in town and spend 15 min. fixing it ...

+1 for this
Attach some vice grips to the clutch arm and use the back of your calf to engage clutch, once moving you can just change gear without clutching, will get you to Gore or Queenstown where a bike shop should be able to sort u out.

A mate of mind broke a clutch cable in Te Anau a few years ago and the local lawn mower shop managed to make him up a cable using lawn mower spares..good luck!

that is exactly it. mushroom on the clutch end, barrel on the leaver. that would be the life saver if it works length wise. Mine is 110 cm (measured with the scale on the leaterman, so ...). longer should be fine, only shorter is hard. they really did not leave much room for it to go anywhere else the TA. guess that is why the keep on breaking after 20000km (yes, this is the second time and yes, a wise man would carry a spare given that knowledge ...).

thanks everyone for the suggestions, i am starting to consider the clamp option to get to gore tomorrow, but unstuck - you may be my golden Hero!

Why don't you leave your Pillion and gear behind and make your way over to Gore where you have been offered help? If you can't manage without a clutch I would be finding my way over to Gore by bus, taxi, hitch, bicycle, waliking, stolen vehicle, or whatever other means necessary rather than spending $150.00 on a bus ticket to catch a boat.

If the clutch cable is long enough, you can get a hacksaw blade, carefully cut the outer sheath at the lever end, which should give you some more inner cable.
If you can get about 30mm of inner then you can poke it thru where the nipple in the picture would be and put a small bolt thru ( find one on the bike that is not important)
Have done this on a Norton and BMW previously.

omg, you guys are legend, but very special christmas thanks to unstuck, such a bloddy hero. on my way to a hacksaw not to take 10 cm off the casing of one of the cables, then it is golden. both ends fit fine.

About those wondering about the. boatride: $300 already payed and no refund or way to move it, so I rather went along. also keeps the partner happy :)

hacksaw from camp ground - check
amazing unstuck who is our santa's parts - check

took me longer than expected to get 10 cm off the funnel, but maybe I was just super careful not to touch the cable. long story short, it works! some creativity was required to get the extra length in without a radius to small.

That fix is solid, i would say. even if the handlebar end gives a little because there now is not brass cap finishing the funnel off, its still good.

That will get us through the next 1-2000km if need be. what I have heard so far from dealers is that no one stocks spares for TA's in NZ. The weekend looks good.

Massive thanks to Mac from the Mobile in Te Anau for pulling us out of the Von Road, tips and support from you all and another speicial thanks to Unstuck.

oh yes, these will go under the seat as soon as I am back

thanks for the link, will check it out. the honda spare is quite expensive as i remember and if they can solder or crimp the nipple / barrel properly than this should be good. still keen to find out why they break every 20000 on my bike ...

as to the status: we went to Milford Sound with the improvised cable. The clutch was good after assambly but started to 'seize' and become unworkable after 10 uses. turns out that the handlebar "cradle" / screw thing is conical and would squeeze the end of the funnel now without a propper cap on the end until the cable got pinced.

back in Te Anau, I got some more stuff from M10. a washer around the cable did the trick in the end and We got to Tuatapere with full use of the cluch.

we could have gone on, but the rain finally found its way through our gear. Our traelling rule: when there is a puddle in the elbow bend of your jacket, stop :)

Too late now..but for future consideration..you can also use a plastic electrical chocolate block to bridge the broken cable. Cut the cable somewhere with strong and sharp cutters to get two clean cut ends and screw each end into a block terminal. That way you can often retain the original bar end nipple to refit to clutch lever. These terminal blocks are pretty easy to scrounge up - as opposed to asking Te Anau residents for a motorcycle cable. Hope all ended well for you guys.

They stood around like helpless fuckwits & couldn't even be arsed pumping the pump. No thanks or fuckin nothing.
Looked like they had probably been rowdy morons the night before & another motel guest had loosened their valve to teach them a lesson. Their solution was to go to Auckland two up on the other bike & come back with a ute (200km each way) next time I'd let them do that.

I am offended by behaviour like that. I was brought up with manners.
I'm sure said morons could have paid someone for the same service I provided free of charge, then manners wouldn't really have been a factor.
As I sell vehicle repairs for a business, I guess I could have come with my work cap on & charged them mileage & triple time since it was Sunday.

All fixed now. I think I also found out why the cable keeps on breaking. The hole that holds the barrel maybe got a little too much paint. The barrel nipple of the new one did not fully fit, so the barrel did not rotate at all. I guess that was the case before as well. So every time I used the clutch, the cable would be bend and straightened at the same point.

Got a new cluch lever as well and not the cable can rotate freely, even with the plastic spacer. Woohoo!!!

Oh, and good for my left hand. I was getting cramps because the temporary fix kept seizing up after a while and was really hard going.

All is well ...

Quite a few years back ... the clutch cable on my GS1000 snapped in the middle on West coast nowhere. I replaced the inner cable with fence wire (well lubed) and "borrowed" from a nearby fence. It took about half an hour to rig .... and was still working fine three weeks later when I bought a new cable.

We had some good showers today and a bit of gusty wind, nothing worrying though.

Checked Metservice rain radar for the northeast of the south island. Looked all clear. Is this for wind?

Final update from the road - 13km to Picton. We added French Pass today, just for good measure. Were able to leave our baggage at the DOC campground in Momorangi Bay. Very nice to shed 65kg off the bike ;)

Oh, and the Molesworth was a blast. I feel much more comfortable on gravel now and the weather was gorgeous!

Thanks to everyone involved at keeping us mooving - would not have been such an amazing holiday without you!

Did you like camping there? I met the 'new' owners a while back (seemed really nice) but have never talked to anyone who has actaully stayed there.
Place looked primo/pumping when I shot past on new years eve :niceone:

Looking at somewhere to crash myself when I head north, so might check this out perhaps?

You left the pillion behind for the day and rode solo? How selfish....

The site has been recently redone by DOC - so it is all still nice and shiny. $15 pp / night beats the holiday parks for sure, and it is in a realy nice location just around the corner from Picton.

Thanks for the updates, and I am glad you could enjoy the rest of your trip. We are very privileged to live in such a wonderful place and next time we may be able to meet up for that drink, lemonade for me of course.:msn-wink:

It is a primo spot right next to the water and not far at all from Picton. The one in Picton isn't bad either and is closer to the pub

Aussie Bay is another cool spot that is not to far out of dodge but the Kenepuru site is the one I'd recommend if you've got the time/weather is nice. Got a kitchen too (flash as au!)

Just looked it up and I never realized it was all owned by DoC, noice. The people I mentioned are the managers then.
Good decision making skills either way and cheers for the updates :niceone:

Don't get confused - it's NOT owned by DoC, it's owned by NZ's taxpayers. DoC merely administer publicly owned land.
