My 2007 CB919 has just over 32,000kms on it and the chain is very close to the end of its life according to the adjustment indicators (ie: chain is stretched). Funnily enough the sprockets are in fantastic condition with very little wear visible.

On another popular motorcycle forum which has a large amount of CB919 riders, they all tend to recommend the DID ERV3 520 chain and a set of sprockets found here: http://www.shop.kyleusa.com/product.sc?productId=459&categoryId=41

I can get that set landed for around $350 NZD. I do not know what brand/rating my current chain/sprockets are.

I've heard that 520 chains can be risky for a high torque/high capacity bike, with shorter life spans and generally being weaker. Is this fact or just scare mongering?

Should I be looking at alternatives, or is that set the best bang for buck?

Other kits I've found include:

RK Sprocket KIT HON CB900F Hornet 02-06 - 530XSO - $250 NZD

OEM might be more expensive but usually works, 919 forum members probably have more money than brains and won't mind paying more often for a chain. Google is your friend.

A quick search shows that Mr Honda fitted a 530 driveline to the CB919. I'd stick with the same spec and expect a further 30-something thousand k's, seems a no-brainer?

Do chains need running in?

I am hopefully getting my new DID ERV3 520 chain this Friday, and am hoping to go to the track day at Hampton Downs on Sunday.

My concern is come Sunday, I may only have put ~100kms on the new chain and sprockets - will doing a track day on a new set be an issue?

Just make sure the chain is lubricated.

Your first session is more of a warm up session, especially if you are in group 1. After your first session I'd re-check your chain. Should be fine after that.

Chains stretch a bit when new, so might pay to adjust it before the track day if required, or after. Just look at the chain and adjust it as needed.

You'll be all good to go full throttle, popping wheelies and skids on a new chain. Lube and adjust.

Most are getting 30,000 miles out of the 520s. But they ride in the dry more.
