You should probably concentrate on your riding instead.

What he said. Seriously!

Unless of course you are going to use it solely as a learning tool to analyse what you did wrong and how to improve next time.

Publishing at this stage in your learning will only put pressure on to make your videos 'exciting' and that won't end well.

If youre gonna do it, attach te camera to the outside of your helmet, and do the voiceover later in editing.
Most of the ones I have looked at are barely able to complete a sentence without a dozen umms, ahhs, etc.
Bit hard to concentrate on both riding, and stringing together coherent, intelligent, interesting sentences.

Im curious though, what do you have to say thats so interesting that people will wanna sit in front of a laptop and watch you ride and ramble? - why not just go ride the fucking thing, do a trackday, go on a big touring ride. Ive never understood the need to snapchat, facetime, facebook, selfie, twitter, vlog every meaningless moment of ones life. Id rather just enjoy most of it as it happens

Some people need to understand that the rest of us don't give a fuck about their harrowing experience of taking 3 hours to choose between buying the blue or green helmet.

I've got an action camera on the way, costing me NZ$98 with free shipping (US$74) and I'm not too sure what to expect from the footage or what I'll do with it. That's why I'm not paying much! It'll do 1080p at 30fps though, good enough to have a play. I guess I could upload some footage, I'm thinking it should be edited down heavily and maybe under 5 minute length - surely it is too boring to be watching half an hour of someone riding?

Some people would say the same about internet forums too...

Yes there's a lot of crap out there like in any avenue of communication, but don't slag the guy before he's started... could be something great....

I'm coming up to nearly half a million views on my channel, not much talking and 'meaningless moments' been edited out so its interesting stuff.
Originally done just to show other guys how much better it is to use tripod and mount camera in different places. Then with the great feedback from viewers its driven me to make better content.
It doesn't take much once you have a system in place to record when you want and then edit when you have the time.

So it is an ego thing really, right? :wings:

I wouldn't use the word ego but it is good to interact with other people from around NZ and the world and exchange ideas. It would be hard to get a real 'Ego' kick out of it when the really successful channels have daily views in the millions per vid (that's what you need if you want money from it).

Facebook likes (and twitter followers) can be bought which I refuse to do as then you don't get any meaningful data of what people like. Also often a lot of people like something but cant be arsed clicking the button or sharing etc so I tend to go off comments more as that takes someones time to do that. But 1% yeah that is a real number in terms of people exposed to your product, 100 people might like it, 10% of them might be able to afford it and about 1% might actually part with money for it.
While many people poopoo FB a lot of people seem to prefer that way to contact me instead of phone or email including some business people. I sold a print on boxing day that was posted earlier just as something recent to update the page, it was very average by my own standards but it was just what the purchaser was looking for.

+500. The ones I have seen that hold my interest and make me laugh are when people fuck up because, to be honest, they are stupid twats. If you want someone to comment on your riding FFS don't film it and put it on the net, ride with someone with some real life experience. Otherwise half the responses/comments you get will be pisstake wind ups, including mine, half will be from people who don't know their arse from their elbow and the other half will be from well meaning people who don't realise that they don't know their arse from their elbow.

OK I'll bite. To OP, I used to have a Sony Action Cam HDR-AS30V (someone stole it last week) which is similar to GoPro but with GPS logging, micro HDMI port and a dedicated 3.5mm audio input port. The camera was connected to a cheap $3 wired microphone which was linked inside the helmet. Audio quality was superb, interior of the helmet eliminated wind noise and voice was crystal clear too.

It was a fun toy to play around with (catching piss poor drivers in action etc), but I didn't use it for motovlog-rub-my-cock-on-youtube-look-at-me-I'm-so-cool thing.

I am prob going to get shreds ripped off me for this by some of the guys in here by the looks of the comments.
But I have started playing around with motovlogging. Feel free to check out my channel. I am only doing it for a bit of fun so my vid are not that good but starting to get a little better.
As for other motovlogger my fav NZ Vlogger would be Tankgrrrl from Wellington. But the ones i really like are Accidentalbroadcast, eveRide ADV Jakethegardensnake, leadpin, AdjrianNickelodeon, mototrippin.

Some of the people in here do have a point about not trying to talk to much if your new to riding.
I have been riding for a few years now and i still find I stop talking a lot to considerate on what i am doing, and end up saying umm and ahh alot.

As I said on page 1, I will take the occasional still from my gopro to add to my ride reports, I do use the camera on most rides, but if I get home and nothing interesting has occurred then the video gets deleted. Nothing lost. What few videos I have uploaded have been about having a go at achieving something new on the pc, not to impress anyone.

I up loaded a boring ride clip once, (actually, I've uploaded lots of boring videos) then got a PM from an ex kiwi who grew up in the district 30 years ago. He was rapped at seeing his old family home and old pine trees that he used to climb.

KoroJ

I've done a bit of onboard videoing of riding and gymkhana stuff but it's pretty boring. Not quite so bad with music added but as per a few comments on here, the editing can be a bit of a drag. None the less, I've added vid links to the occassional blog.

I see there is a bluetooth back available for the GoPro to connect up with the Sena, but can't say I'd consider adding the voiceover as I'd probably even bore myself.

As for using it for learning experiences and fails. I don't think you get much idea of what's happening from an onboard camera as the perspective is very insulated frrom all the things that are going on with, and around the bike. That sort of thing would be better if you were the subject from another bike, but even then, the wide angle view loses a lot of any valid perspective?

Hi all,

New biker here and I'm just wondering if there are any bikers here who keep or post vlogs? I know there are quite a few in aus and I am pretty certain there are a few in NZ. I was thinking of keeping a gopro on my helmet incase of accidents or other such things, and came across the thought of vlogging, although once I improve in riding. A go pro wont record for long enough to do what you want. I get maybe 60mins of recording if im lucky, its awkward to operate on my helmet and gets its mic jammed up from all the wind noise. I don't ride a honda, so am not gay enough to ride around talking to myself.

I have a hero4 and only use it for underwater filming. Most people want a simple switch on and film camera and the gopro can do that but it can also film professional quallity if you know what your doing

There are one or two genuinely entertaining or interesting ones. Even then, to keep things fresh is difficult. Roadcraft Nottingham is good, as he's got a fairly unique viewpoint (he's a riding instructor), owns/rides/reviews a bunch of different bikes, and has a bunch of cameras.

Most of them are just annoying extroverts who drop $500 on a GoPro, chuck it on their bike, swear for the sake of swearing, have no idea what they're going to talk about before they go out, and spend 15 minutes saying sweet fuck all (when they're not blasting along at 100mph with enough wind noise to blow your speakers).

Questions to ask yourself
- Go for a ride, pretend you have a camera and you're going to talk about something, are you good enough a rider that you can talk about something intelligently while still riding?
- Will you shoot footage along different routes or do you just commute the same route every day? Do you go touring and do trackdays? Will you be prepared to spend hours faffing about with cameras and memory cards during them?
- Are you prepared to spend hours upon hours editing the footage, cutting down a half hour rambling mess into 5-10 minutes that is actually interesting?
- Do you regularly spend money on things that you can review?

I can get the best part of 10GB of recording from my Hero 3 set on 720 x 25. Think that added up to a total of 2hr of recording. If I want to clip or edit anything from the recorded takes at home, I open them in Live Movie Maker and edit there. Under video edit tools I mute the wind/engine noise then add music and save, if there is anything interesting worth keeping. Still cant get the video clip to fade out:(. I haven't tried doing a voice over yet. My recorded voice sounds crap, I cringe just listening to our phone mailbox message.

If talking to your self is being gay, what does singing to yourself make you? Plenty do. Talking into a mike while riding could be distracting. I would imagine that adding a voice over at home would be a safer bet.

The most boring evening I ever spent was at a friends house watching a visitor show video of his holiday. There was no editing whatsoever, so if he went for a boat ride that lasted an hour, there was an hour of boat ride video. And I wish it was only an hour.

Wearing a GoPro on your helmet is not a great idea. OK, I know some of the GP riders do it in training and in the Superprestigio or wherever. But the surgeons have said that the reason Schumacher is in the sad state that he is in, is due to the fact that he had a GoPro on his helmet. Mounting it on the bike is another matter.

Today was a lovely day and I rode up to Mokau and had whitebait, eggs, and chips for lunch. The lack of a GoPro did not detract from the experience in the least
