I have recently bought a nice Oxford magnetic tankbag, not the model big enough that it needs extra flaps but the one that is nice and flush. I was on a trip last weekend and I discovered, at the first lunch/coffee stop, that I was carrying some nice sharp metal tools (nail cutters) on the bottom of said bag. Fortunately I hadnt scratched the tank but made a mental note to check the bottom of my magnetic bag in future, a mental note I was to repeat to myself when I got to work the next day with a couple of screwdrivers stuck to the bottom :).

Get some anti-rug slip rubber matting to put between the bottom of the tank bag and the top of your tank. This will stop any bits of ferrous metal the magnets pick up from scratching the paint. I've got one of those bags too. Great aren't they?

Yeah its great. Im not sure what you mean about the material so ill wait until I see you on a ride again (sometime soon?).

I found that too.
I think you had the same bag as what i had??

The matt that Jim means can be bought from any bike store or even Repco or Supercheap. Its just a rubber non slip matt. ention it to one of them. They should know what you mean.
People use them on their dash boards of their cars etc.

Go to Payless Plastics and ask for a roll of the stuff people that own caravans use to stop stuff sliding off shelves..

I have some left at home if you want. Cheap as chips and lasts ages.

Cheers

I kinda know what you guys are talking about, but does this anti-slip stuff go/attach to my tank or the bag?
Im not sure: does it stop sharp stuff connecting itself to my bag...or just shield the tank from the sharp shit?

Please have patience :).

You need to wrap it around your head, in case the tank gets scratched, so no-one can hear the (muffled) screams of anguish.

You stick it on the tank, before putting the tankbag on. Then any grit / screws / metal animules / steel-dicks that stick to the tankbag shouldn't scatch the paint.

Must get me some.
I went to the $2 Shop like Mr Jim2 said, but I dinnae see it. (Didn't help that I was in the grip of a most malevolent virus, that I have yet to rid myself of...)

Here's an idea for you all. Buy a bike that doesn't require perfect tank-finish to give a good riding experience.

Nanas.

Craziness :). I bought it new, I want to sell it near-new.

Yup.

Just use it as a loose mat under the tank. Magnets work through it.

Get in the habit of removing the bag by laying it backwards onto the seat and closing the flaps so they won't pick up shite.

I've used an Oxford magnetic tankbag now on three bikes and have had no problems with damage to the tank. No singlet or underlay required. Just chuck it on and go (hopefully not famous last words).

I am advised that west coast ironsand beaches can be a problem. In those circumstances I would consider using an underlay.

You got it mate, proper bikes are black and dirty and not likely to get nicked.

Sure can be...just found out yesterday when I put the bag down to put on my helmet and didn't notice the sand....luckily I have one of those non slip pads or else I would have scratched the hell out of the tank with the cubic metre of sand I had just picked up...hard to get off too since the magnets in my bag are not removable... :oi-grr:

Skelstar, you just need to use that pack rack you've got, no paint scratchin problems then :Punk: On tank bags in general, some of those large ones I really wonder how the hell you are supposed to see where you're going!

Dude, that rack is for aerodynamics not for packs!!! How do you think my wee bike can keep up with you guys on the weekend?...in built up areas...ok REALLY built up areas.

My tank bag, a Motoline (?), is a pain in the arse. Over a certain (unmentionable) speed it thinks it's a bird and starts flying all over the place.
Disconcerting as I'm usually passing a truck at the time.

I had a local sign shop put clear vinyl on the tank to protect that and I think I might put duct tape across the front of the flaps of the bag in an attempt to stop the wind getting under them. As long as I can still get at the fuel filler...

If all that doesn't work the bastard can go in the cupboard until I decide to buy a bike with a fairing again.

I lost my keys once...after running around the house like a mad bastard and christening everyone and everything c%^&, I found they were stuck on the bottom of my tank bag...stopped throwing my keys on my unmade bed after that.
