Does anyone have any knowledge of Speed-X or the clothing made with that name on it?
Good, bad, sort-of OK?
When funds allow I'll get some decent leathers but for now will happily settle for something that will economically protect me in the short(er) term.

Who knows? One thing in your favour though, the importer has been around a while, has some good lines and a better name than some.

I'm pretty sure my last set of gloves were speed-x. Bought them from Cycletreads for around a hundy bucks. Lasted a couple crashes over a few years. The velcrow eventually became a bit loose and didn't stick as well and I had a small hole at the end of my left pinky.
Unsure about anything else but the gloves though.

I have speed-X textile pants. Had them for quite a few months now, since last autumn I think. Zips and everything still working as new, no crash test or anything strenuous, just a few thousand K's. The air vents aren't the best.... As in I don't notice the difference zipped up or opened.
Anyway, well designed, fit good, padded well and very warm with the insulation layers in.

I'm on my 4th pair of speed-x summer pants. The ass keeps ripping out on them. To be fair though I'm wearing them over 30 hours a week and I move around in the seat a lot.

Thanks to everyone for their input. Feedback is so important, and in general;, it seems Speed-X is pretty good kit. Especially given the price. Sure, you can buy XxYyZz brand for two to three times as much and it may be better, but...
For now though, I was lucky enough to be offered a Clover textile jacket (armour in elbows and shoulders, pocket for a back protector) at a very reasonable price. No idea if it is waterproof or not, or if the zip-out liner is going to be needed. Bear in mind that I am used to riding through a UK winter by putting a jumper on under my leathers...
I've used it a few of times, while wearing just a shirt under it, and it's been fine. (All vents and zips open, riding 60km out at 07.30 and back late afternoon.) So it is fine for summer, but when the weather gets a little cooler... Who knows? Can't comment on the abrasion resistance either, thankfully!
