We handed our notice in on Tuesday (two months required) and finish up on Monday March 9th at midday. The truck will deliver our possessions to our home at Mangakino on the 10th. By the time the finish date arrives, we will have done 12 months Managing a 32 room Motel with three conference rooms and 11 staff. Market research and feedback from within the industry (and our own experience) has highlighted the real need for reliable relief managers. We always intended to become Relief Managers. As it happens, we have made the call to start a year earlier than our original plan intended.
We'll be having a massive garage sale once down there (or maybe in Feb when we're down for our days off). We have two sets (and in some cases three sets) of everything. Will be looking to buy another bike to suit out travelling (and fun times) needs.
Today, we bought a letter box and the number 15.

That is how rare a decent, competent relief manager is. I think Hens Tooth will sit well on my CV.

I think you're absolutely right. I've done a lot of hospo work over the years including acting for both sides of motel transactions. Very often (not always, but more than you would think), when people sell up their motel leases their relationship goes too. Basically because it is 24/7/365 and no rest. Relentless. Sure, you can make some money but it is really hard.
Good luck with the new gig.

Thanks HD, the time is right for many reasons to be honest.
We are currently on a 10 day holiday at the beach. Will probably take a three week break when we get down there for various reasons, namely because we can and want to.

Central North Island is south to thousands of people, maybe this will take us to the South Island every once and a while? there are some people we want to meet down there and if the opportunity is there, then so will we. Then I could shout you that Lemonade....on the rocks!

I can really see how that can happen. Far Canal, some days at the motel blowing steam to your beloved is the only way to cope. People are so fucking entitled these days. The number of WTF moments may even see me put pen to paper.

yeah the worst part of dealing with people is the people :devil2: You get those who think the customer is always right, but really some customers are just assholes that have gotten away with it for far too long because of that dumb saying.
Then again, the good cunts make up for it :D
Good luck with the change. Doesn't seem like long ago you guys where just heading there.
I was chatting to a dude up here who is in the same line of work now as he bought in a manager for his hotel with the intent to retire, then he go bored  Certainly some good money and some decent flexibility with when you do and don't want to work.

Yup. Peoples is getting more special by the day. I was getting close to putting forehead to nose in me old shoppe. Lackluster crack & companionship at home as a consequence. Consumers are precious vampires.
All the very best in your endeavors. Get your rep out there. Where is Mangakino?

It's an old Dam town between Tokoroa and Taupo, houses are being snapped up for weekend retreats because of what it has to offer, cheap affordable housing/quiet/peaceful/lake/friendly locals/great location, 40 mins to Taupo/20 mins to Tokoroa/45 mins to Rotorua and an hour to Hamilton.

Yip, Managkino will be our home as from March 9th Graham, nice and handy to a lot of Motels, kind of feel that want to concentrate anywhere from Home to as far south as the Kapiti coast, maybe Whitianga? but anywhere will be considered really.

For sure, once the dust settles. One thing that has been most notable over the last year is the isolation from, what was normal living for us, we also want to change that.

I had to sleep in my car on the forecourt of the Mobil there. Ran out of gas, probably had enough to make Urenui but knew their servo was shut. Better a bird in the hand than two in the bush. Cooked sausages for dinner on the manifold.
That's what happens when you have a fussy car an you let someone else drive from Auckland to Hamilton they use more gas in that stint than I did going from NP to Auck. Should have noticed but I didn't damhik.
Still an adventure.

Never been a servo in Mangakino, though there is a swipe/pay bowser at the Bennydale turn off now, also a Servo at Whakamaru 9 K's down the road.
We had someone stay at the Motel from there, they were looking for petrol one day, no gas station but they bought a house. She is the local painter.

Well where the fuck did we sleep then? Last sign we past was Mangakino. We were headed south. It was a Mobil. There was a beach not 2 mins walk over the back?
Am I perhaps thinking of Awakino?

Yes Awakino, there is a servo just north of there, and it's by the sea. Mangakino is much inland and has a Lake.

Truck arrived today, all our gear is now in storage until Tuesday of next week. 12pm Monday we are out of here and heading home. We have moved into a room at the Motel until we finish.
Immediate plan is to not work for the rest of March, take things easy, potter around at home getting things in order, when it's fine ride the Triumph, visit a few Motels to secure some relief time... but more importantly, defrag our brains.
We have some work lined up already (Motel Relief Management) in Northland, and that work will continue for one week each month for the rest of the year.

Be seeing you pilgrims darn thattaways sometime soon. Enjoy the break guys.
This week has proved to be one of the hardest we have done here. Losing our dear friend 007XX has challenged us on a whole new level.
Today one of our staff has come in and worked all day for us (no pay for most of that time), meaning I could be off the counter to help Mark get his work finished early. We have been sitting in our room for the past hour relaxing! Relaxing at this hour of the day on a Sunday has never happened before here.
She did it to thank us for the opportunity we have given her here.
Only 2 lock boxes out tonight and hopefully no calls from the night phone and we are done :D
I found a bottle of wine on the desk today from a guest wishing us well.
All things being equal we should be on the road heading home by 12:05pm tomorrow. We officially hand over at noon
