I am part of a group that does voluntary support riding for triathlons, marathons and peddly events around the Auckland region.

This Sunday 18th is the 70.3 (half ironman) triathlon based out of the Viaduct Events Center in down town dorkland.

We are still short 4 bikes to carry media and other duties. We need very experienced riders who have done a lot of pillion work, quiet bikes and most importantly not nutters. Basically your roles would be to carry around pillions for a variety of reasons during the cycle and run legs.

Are you interested? If so PM me your contact details so I can call you for a chat.

If I wasn't going away this weekend I would be keen. I'm sure the V-Strom could find its way around
the course on its own based on it's past life / owner. I was impressed with Alans addition
to his GS when I saw it over the weekend. Some impressive welding! Small world........

i would, except its in auckland.
And being insane might dq me by your criteria.

I would help, but I've never ridden with a pillion before (and don't have my full just yet - passed the CBT2 test though)

Looking at some of the crew the insanity defense is well used!

Sounds interesting but...pick any excuse form the following...

1) Getting to Auckland for 6:30 would be a challenge (though if the police come and check my son is keeping to his curfew I way well be awake early enough to set off).
2) I get lost in Auckland...in fact almost anywhere.
3) It might raining, or be windy.
4) Can only take skinny pillions as I almost overload the bike on my own.

Actually thinking about option 1..maybe it would be good to get away for a break, and the wife is working on Sunday. PM me if still stuck for riders after 3pm today and I'll see what I can do.

Sorry Mr H, I was with you until the Quiet bike bit... Unfortunately that doesn't describe my current ride...

1) alarm clock
2) map
3) harden up (forecast is for fine)
4) would make for a good photo

Will do for after 3pm, looks like we are still looking for addiational riders.

Beggars can't be choosers. Hauling around the photogs would still be ok. Just how noisy are we talking?

1. Getting UP before 6:30 is a challenge, but in this case I'll make an exception
2. I get lost on the way to the bathroom but my phone has GPS in it, so I'm sorted there
3. It will rain, and the good thing about that is that it will keep the rear cylinder on the Buell cool
4. Problem with skinny pillions is noticing after they have fallen off.

How'd you go?

Had a mate did this once and the journo sat backwards on his ST1100 pillion seat filming back at the the runners/riders from ahead. He said it was a bit disconcerting.

Is this the Gremlin who used to do wheel stands on his KTM two up, all over the countryside??? Oh, how the mighty have fallen (or mellowed).

Mellowed... finding enjoyment from motorcycling in other ways. Bought an adventure tourer, trading in the KTM, and put just under 100k on the clock in the 4 years I've owned it, including riding in the USA and Canada in 2011...

Mellowed. It hasn't happened to me yet, I think I'm getting crankier and more risk prone as I get older. Hey, I spent a lot of 2010 living in and travelling around the states and Canada - awesome places. I'd like to get a bunch of people and ride some of the more interesting places (did it in a 4WD). Your thoughts, would you do it again?

I shipped the bike across and toured with Ken: http://www.kiwiken.co.nz/

Doing it again, on my wish list is going to the top of Alaska and Canada (Dalton and... bah, forgot). The ice roads.

Except mates are settling down, getting married. Bastards :wait:

You need to give the ancient advice of the great philosopher Plato - "run, forest, run!".

Okay, the AlCan is fucking amazing during summer, and it's even better during the middle of winter. It would not be survivable on a bike during winter, seriously. If you dropped the bike (a near certainty), you'd freeze to death within an hour or two. I've spent a reasonable amount of time in Kamloops and Vancouver (I got laid many, many times in Whistler) - there are a tonne of really great places to ride.

I think the Dalton is more East Coast isn't it?

When are you doing the US again?
