View Full Version : Where are they now?

Princess Bandit is the one who got me thinking this morning, where are they now? After a break from KB of a few years, I'm (sort of) back (although I'm mostly living in Sydney now).

SkidMark. Carver. And the good people, GSXRTrace, Vifferman, etc etc? What happened to the Hornet Swarm? And that treasure hunt that I used to enjoy?

PB is around, she's a moderator here, logs in most days.
GSXRTrace is in USA/Canada, follows winter being a ski instructor

Hornet Swarm, one got married, another is engaged, another has a baby on the way... the bastards have gone and found partners <_<

I always just hoped that, that I'd meet some nice friendly girl, like the look of her, hope the look of me didn't make her physically sick, then pop the question and, um, settle down and be happy. When you're single, the single ladies provide food, shelter, comfort. All in an attempt to show single guys what their lives could be like if they took the plunge. Which, ironically perpetuates the single guy behaviour.

When you're in a relationship, you become an ATM, and a personal assistant to someone. Quoting an ancient philosopher, "Run, Forest, Run".

How are you btw?

Well MBB, it's like this - I got married, bought a house, got concussed for most of last year from a frisbee and now expecting a baby girl in March! During that time my poor bikes hardly got ridden! It's taken me 3 years to only do 44,000km on the Predator!

Dang, life is what happens when you are trying to ride your bikes!

As for KB, I've been lurking in the back (rather like when I was first learning to ride and just read the threads here!) Figures it takes you to bring me out and add a post now! (wait, that makes two now! )

I actually miss the old KB, but I am in no place to bring it back, life has intervened.

I reckon those of us of a certain vintage got the best years out of this forum. We made some amazing friends that were actually REAL, not just an avatar. Best of all, our friendships for the most part remain to this day.
If WE (active members & lurkers) don't support this forum, I believe it will fizzle out. It is SO FUCKING TAME these days.

So, what to do?

Thoughts?

Face book is a FACELESS fucking forum, at least riding a bike, and inviting others to join you, you get to actually meet real people.

I really believe this is a special place to meet people that share a passion.

Forum sites bring strangers together. They become friends, then Facebook takes over as their preferred on-line socialisation media.

Sad fact of life. No way to stop it.

Three or four years ago KB had around 4,500 active members. Now it's almost half that. Par for the course.

The on-line socialisation world has changed since "the good old days of KB". Accept it and move on.

Sounds like you've got a really great life mate, congrats on having a baby GI Joe (or Josephine) on the way - you're going to be an awesome dad. What was the deal with the frisbee? 44,000 k's is more than most of the clowns on here have ever ridden…

I've been traveling for work a fair bit, for a while I was back in NZ, then I was living between four cities (sunny nice places, where no one was shooting at me, for a change) - back in Auckland for a couple of months over summer while I pack up the house and sell a bunch of muscle cars - and then I'll be back in Sydney for more work.

@MBB - The predator rides like it's meant to, a nice machine for those riders who aren't too inclined to bend over like a sprotsbiker but still like a bit of get and up go. I find it ticks all my boxes and the fact it's equally at home in the city or country (or even gravel roads) makes it ideal for me.

Obviously being a Honda, it's predictable, it's reliable and the build spec is good! The 17 litre tank is a bit more limiting than my Hornet but that only comes into when you want to keep riding to the back and beyond (as I used to do!)

The rear seat is made for a cute asian girl's arse and the storage beneath it is only for the manual and a tyre patch kit!

When you get it revving into the 10K range then you really notice how fast you are racing to your death! Kick off the aberration that is the stock can (most get rid of the catalytic converter) choose what fruit you what to spoil it with and the Preddy is always popular with their owners.

Mmm, cute Asian ass and pies.

It's an interesting proposition, it's a quirky looking bike, and I saw a tonne of them overseas near where all the Germans seem to invade each summer. As for getting old people talking on KB - I am feeling nostalgic for a time in my life that was filled with laughter and a lot of incredibly good people (of which you were one). I must admit, I haven't been on KiwiBiker (or other forums) as much as I used to was. Part of it's got to do with my Mum carking it, and me deciding to buy a car with the money I inherited. Then talking the vifferbabe into buying a VW Cabriolet, so now she has zero reason to go on the back of the VFR, so all the new gear and Sena stuff I bought is in the cupboard gathering dust (apart from the headset on my helmet, which I use every weekday during my commute).

Something I have always thought odd of predator owners. They all seem to do a lot less kms than they used to. Especially true of former hornet riders.

All have good things to say, do it seems off that do less kms. I wonder if perhaps Honda haven't gone too far in refining the excitement out of a few of their post 2000 bikes.

CB1300 = brilliant bike but if it were not for the commute I probably not put big kms on it. 2 under 3 and renovations may not help but I just don't feel the urge like I used to. Oddly when I was shopping every example I came across was very low kms. Most belonged to riders it was not their only bike. Just the pillion bike and weekender.

Predator = gijoe1313 is the 3rd person I have heard say they ride it less than their old hornet.

Shadows = mostly guys returning to biking after a long absence. Brag about all then kms they will do. Actually do less than a service a year unless they do an SI trip.

Stupid phone / Tapatalk, apologies in advance.

Gremlin
22nd January 2015, 23:56
I don't think it's entirely about the bike. First year owning the BMW I did over 30k on it alone, with almost no commuting (done by another bike). Next year, 2xk, then something like 18k, and this year was more like 15k. No change in bikes, just not getting round the country like I was. Partially work, boss was touring Europe for 6-7 months in 2013, so I thought it prudent to reduce my risk. However... that's sort of continued.

Finished my drivers licence in 2013 as well, so some km are now being done in 4 wheels, plus I've picked up mountain biking... so time is split.

Also came to realise how small NZ is. Clocking up a few km meant I was covering a fair chunk of the country quite regularly... so achieving most of what I wanted... not much left...

gijoe1313

@Bigdog This of course is not by choice! Ever since I have found domesticated bliss, my forays into the usual at my whim pootles have been curtailed! Also a concussion last year meant for the first time ever, a year where I did not replace any tyres nor service any bikes! :shit: In this last week, I have done more km's than the entire of last year!

Now that I am able to ride a bike with more confidence that I won't just black out or have a "moment", it's like being a returning biker - re-riding old familiar roads like they were new for the first time (I normally rode roads like they were "first time" for the safety thing but this was like "oh yeah, I had forgotten that little cool bit")

44,000km in 3 years is a long way from doing 95-100, 000km years :weep:

I guess I was making hay while sun shined knowing that who knows what the future might hold in store for me! :violin:

And since I wasn't riding as much, not much to blather on KB about! :msn-wink:

Big Dog
23rd January 2015, 09:36

:msn-wink:

I know the feeling.
Pre meeting my wife 30,000 was a slow year mostly adhered to due to the cost of servicing rather than the lack of destinations. Post would be more the 20 k. Mostly due to a lack of time and in a small way an increase in scrutiny over spending.

Mind you, my kms are back up. 25,000 for the last 12 in spite of 6 weeks non riding ( christmas, maternity leave etc.) but in all honesty I would trade a home based job and a drop to 6,000 pleasure any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

I recall a couple of holidays in the 04-07 era that the Hayabusa needed a pair of services a week apart. Fond times.

Almost as fond as chucking 1100 kms on a scooter one weekend.

Speaking of which, do you still have the twins?

Stupid phone / Tapatalk, apologies in advance.

Hehe, Yes I do recall averaging 2000km a week, bikes always in for servicing and tyres needing sorting all the time. Still have the two A100s, still have the RZ250 and RZ350 and enough parts to make two more RZ250s! Wifey says no more bikes unless I sell off some of the others ... my evil plan is to fix up the other RZs, sell those off and get myself another bike! The last two vehicles I've bought haven't been bikes ... :eek5:

A MPV ...
A Toyota Raum ...

Future proofing for new sprog unit to join family circle!

Living out of a suitcase sort of thing? Time zones changing on ya? All part of being an international man of mystery innit? Yes, what did you do with your sexy beast? Is it in storage or did you sell it off?

98 hotels in a row this year, a record for me. I generally travel light, I have a suitcase for longer trips (meaning two weeks or more), but normally it's a small carry on jobbie. International travel sounds great, but sucks ass. I spent the majority of weekends this year in airports.

I sold Scoot. Worst mistake ever. I mean, I lie awake at night and think about that bike. It got sold on to another guy, and I met him and asked to buy it back - but then I lost his number when my phone got destroyed… I miss that bike more than anything. I've owned others since, but none are my scoot.

I've been in NZ for a few weeks, I've sold four cars (fifth goes to the new owner tomorrow), mothballing the rest, and then I'm back to Sydney again.

WTF are you on about? When was I good people?
I must admit, I haven't been on KiwiBiker (or other forums) as much as I used to was. Part of it's got to do with my Mum carking it, and me deciding to buy a car with the money I inherited. Then talking the vifferbabe into buying a VW Cabriolet, so now she has zero reason to go on the back of the VFR, so all the new gear and Sena stuff I bought is in the cupboard gathering dust (apart from the headset on my helmet, which I use every weekday during my commute).
Yeah... the commute; only time I ride now. So that's 2 x 15 minutes per weekday, and that's it.:(

You've always been good people. Sorry to hear about your mum.

SkidMark. Carver. And the good people, GSXRTrace, Vifferman, etc etc? What happened to the Hornet Swarm? And that treasure hunt that I used to enjoy?

Skidmark - is masquerading as a (trailer-sailor) yacht in Timaru - saw him tied up at the Lake Aviemore boat harbour marina over the weekend!

Seems to be keeping a low profile but otherwise is in reasonably tidy condition for Skidmark I thought!

He exposed himself as a fuckwit some years ago after a death on an organised group ride, calling the ride organiser a Murderer.
He came under fire prior to that after he loaded a video of himself and his mates on ride, which included a passing manoeuvre on a left hand bend causing the oncoming car driver to make a decision where he wouldn't kill the rider.

Gradual leading them up to starting the bike will help.

Loud noises will always do that. I have grown up around loud noises so no worries.

Strange thing was it was my oldest friend who got me interested in bikes, as his father did the racing circuit thing in Yurp, and my mate's two older brothers had bikes, one of them going racing for a time. Now, as far as I know none of them ride - my mate gave it up in the late 70's and took up bicycling...:weird: Much more dangerous, as it turned out - he got a bad leg injury mountain biking.

I remember drinking/singing with him at a certain party until the wee hours, then the home owner marched into the scene wearing someones dressing gown and closed the party down...never did figure out what 'Pigeon Pie' was all about.... don't ask, you had to be there.

I never did meet her, she was/is/has more balls than me.
She asked almost the same questions I had about bike things.

She seemed to do everything and cover all aspects regarding riding that I had ever thought about.
While I am still at the beginning :brick:

Its was good to see questions she posed and get decent answers back on KB.

Funny that you posted this...I was just thinking yesterday afternoon I hadn't had any JWs at the door. Then Lo and behold, 3 came along to my gate, looked at the large dogs on the other side of the gate and wandered off. Clearly they knew there was no chance of converting the dogs :innocent:

Wow, I had the opposite experience. I was walking my English bully and was accousted by two very pushy JW's at the park. I was kinda hoping my somewhat fierce looking dog would put them off, but no joy there. In fact, the dog seemed to love them ( I sure fucking didn't ). It's bloody hard trying to fob those cunts off without appearing to be rude.

I'm of the opinion that accosting someone in the street, not taking 'no' for an answer and pushing religious views to a disinterested person is extremely rude. So after a polite "No thank you", I stop worrying about appearing rude myself, and make it exceptionally clear just how disinterested I am.

Other times, I might listen to them for a bit, if I'm feeling particularly magnanimous.

Whatever happened to Tank? I remember he had a way of writing that was either incredibly funny or incredibly sad.
