Normally you might fancy your chances but one of the Hawera cops can write "Isle of Man TT" in his CV. Maybe this dude's ambition exceeded his ability?

Another eyewitness said he saw a police car knock the man off the bike at low speed as it reached the corner of Collins St and South Rd.
That's a pretty interesting development. I've never heard of them doing that before.

First crash I ever saw was a cop car pulling in front of a bike being chased by a few other cops down Moorhouse Ave. Was pretty brutal.

watched a cop go into the back of a xr doing a runner in Oamaru long time ago. Hard to tell if deliberate as it was at night and xr had no lights stopped to turn and got collected. Chain broke on xr and front end of cop car looked close to written off. Guy went over the back of car then got up and tried to run away.

I don't agree with the policy of knocking someone off the bike if this is in fact what happened. Even at very low speed it could result in a very serious injury to the rider

Or offender who had drugs on him may have got desperate and taken off at speed running over a child on a crossing 10mins later.
I say knock him off. If someone stole my bike idd like to think the popo would knock him off it.
Give someone the chance to pull over for a while then if he/she gets hurt so be it.

Maybe it is a discretionary thing? Could be a wanted felon heading into town, in this case, and known for not giving a fuck about the general public.
Otherwise I agree.

Judge, jury, and executioner. Where do we draw the line? When is it ok to kill someone for something they *MIGHT* do? Perhaps it was time to back off from chasing the rider as the safer option.

Maybe they thought he was smuggling toothfish and couldn't be bothered to wait till they ran out of fuel and had to head home.

If it was my stolen bike he was on I would rather see both it and him written off rather than get it back a few weeks later completely rooted and the thief get away to do it again. And if it was just a runner then well, you can't expect them to play by the rules if you don't can you? Caveat emptor and all that.

Yep, I guess I would also agree if there were extenuating circumstances to justify the police tactic do this.

The issue is what they didn't do. They didn't stop.
Knocked off and injured is fine with me.
Your saying if you don't want to stop just don't and you can just get away. That's fine but with your policy every criminal in NZ is going to get themselves a bike as a getaway vehicle and rob, plunder, rape, kill risk free of capture.

So what if the next hot head alpha male cop decides he's dirty harry? and you're obviously one of those scummy bikers. Pretty sure you did a runner the week before on that black bike. Smack you're in a wheelchair. He was doing a runner your honour. OK well that's OK under section 2438.

Yeah tricky one. Do cop cars in NZ have dash-cams yet? Given how cheap they are I can't see there's any reason not to. Would help keep both cops and citizens a lot safer. Even if they only turned on with lights and sirens.

More mothering shit. They had the option straight away. Pull over and take it like a man. They already DID something and failed to stop. Start going back to the crap of cops not giving chase then every man and their dog will start speeding away from cops again. Just look what happened when they were not able to touch them on their own property. They all started running.

Nothing new here, been done before.
Only thing wrong is the use of "Epic Fail" in thread title, just another police pursuit successfully concluded.

Someone wants to not stop has something to hide. In this case drugs but could be anything. Maybe stolen and not yet reported and so on.
Conclusion. Motorbike is not equipped to handle impact with cop car so don't attempt slow speed escape.

Is hard to say. Around 1991. Was on the Thames st on one of the corners near Nen street area. Rider was travelling South on Thames street attempting a rt turn. Braked to turn and got hit from behind.

Police pursuits incur risk and it's in place in other countries to break of the pursuit when the risks put the public (including the rider/driver) in danger. Deliberately knocking a rider off a bike can cause serious injury and the pursuit IMHO should have been ended or an alternative tactic such as blocking used.

I think this is the part that worries me the most - I have little tolerance for young people who run scarred from the law (Don't run, take it like a man) but the above is why if there is such a policy I would want it well documented and I would like attempting it to be considered Lethal force (the same way that they need authorisation in the US to attempt a PIT) - because The wrong cop, with the wrong chip on his shoulder on the wrong day will result in death or a wheelchair.
And the police complaints authority will do a fantastic job of shielding the police from any responsibility

Ok for us older dudes though aye.:Punk::Punk:
Did a runner from the back of a cop car one night at the sunset rd traffic lights, took off running towards the industrial estate towards mairangi bay.
Was going great until I found the number 8 wire strung across the earthworks at neck height.
Another night in warkworth I gave them the slip and was hiding under a deck at the back of a house, but unfortunately it was a local cops house.:brick:
