View Full Version : So tempted to get a new L5 GSX-R600

At the current price, it's soooo tempting. To get back onto a real bike again would be great. :scooter: (But it would mean getting in debt again, so maybe I should wait a bit.)

One thing about the L5 GSX-R600, which overall I think looks great. (And some great quality parts like the 4-pot Brembos on the front and the chunky Showa forks... )
But on the current Gixxer 600's what's with that great big oversized can, where the old ones, like the K6's had IMHO, a better looking smaller muffler. I reckon in some respects the styling has gone backwards. Is it some kind of emissions thing?

Not a fan of the headlight on the latest GSX-R's either. But it's still a hell of a bike for $13K new, compared to $20K for the CBR600RR or nearly $19K for a new R6.

Absolutely the best value brand new super sport money can buy, and don't forget the banging 2 year Suzuki warranty!

Despite the awful blue graphics that is a lot of bike for you bucks if you are in the market for a mid sport bike - 'save' $5,500!!!!

Just do it if you want it. You deserve one. You have been working hard. Interest rates are falling - pop it on the mortgage .........

Linky for all to see- so hurry up and order one.

Would be a killer bike, but yea, definitely not a fan of the new graphics on em.

And I know what you mean about the exhaust. My K7 was the last to have it and it easily sounds a lot better stock than K8 onwards up til the L4 at least.

Yeah, if I was to splash out, I'd mostly likely go for the so-called "Pearl Bracing White/Metallic Mat Fibroin Gray"... aka white and gray. Bit more discreet.

Buy it but only if you are willing to accept a minimum 30% drop in value the second it's registered in your name, before factoring in interest on a depreciating <strike>asset</strike> liability. Then a further ~10% drop in value every year until it plateaus out at ~6-7k.

"Pearl Bracing White/Metallic Mat Fibroin Gay"

Fixed the colour name for you above.

Looks good in the white and grey.

Pipe is a easy fix and lets face it at that price you can afford a pipe! You can pick up a aftermarket slip on from the USA or Pommyland for a good price.

I don;t think the value of Suzukis specials drops the same as a non-special Suzuki. They probably have a new 600 on the way, run out the current model and the new one will bang in at $19k again. Unless you are racing it the 14 model will still be desirable and once sold will still command a good price used for it's first year or so.

I've been watching their Summer Fest specials for a dozen or so years now and provide excellent value and as above hold it for longer than the current year model (most Fest models are not current year).

The person I feel sorry for it the one who paid $19k just before Xmas for his 600 .........

I have a GEM visa that I bought a bed with. Got shoppers insurance on it, if I buy any item on it, then the item goes on sale, I file a claim, show the current price of the same item and bam they credit me the difference. I think its valid for about 6 months after purchase

That seems weird and good luck claiming, I am sure there is a huge page of fine print there!
I bet you have to pay RRP then really....
I mean to say, almost everything is on sale at some stage right?

Not sure if I misunderstood, but the on-special $13K Gixxer isn't the outgoing 2014 model, it's the newly arrived 2015 (L5) model. So that's even better, as it will be about a year until they come out with another model, with different coloured plastic and maybe a couple of mm's reshape here and there.

Won't happen. You'll loose way less percentage wise buying a GSXR600 at that price than just about anything else. It'll not be a 6-7 k bike for years to come.

lol, well you certainly called my bluff, cheers... I'm about 5 minutes from Grey Lynn Red Baron, and about 7 minutes from Coleman's, so I'll see if I can get a test ride over the next week or so, and if they don't have it in white/grey, I may get back to you on that offer, cheers! :niceone: Which dealership are you with, may I ask?

Correct - it is the current 2015 model - rare for a Suzuki Fest. I'm guessing global sales of the 600's are slow (media indicates this) thus a excess.

Sweet - I've never heard of that before.

I had a look at the fine print and although there are some (sensible, predictable) things excluded the main thing is that they'll pay a maximum of $600 per item and $2000 total over a 12-month period.

Not a bad scheme.

I think a 600 would be more fun to ride than most 1k sports bikes now. New sports bikes ride without effort and at least you would get that race feeling on a 600 with more gear shifts and more attention to lines rather than point and squirting 180+ hp.

I wonder if thats why manufactures are starting to reinvent café racers. Feels like your riding hard without massive speeds.
Im sure naked bikes re-invented themselves when sports bikes handled well at over 200kph.

I'm guessing you've never owned a brand spanking new motorcycle?

I bought my bike almost a year ago and even though it had low kms I still spend over a grand getting it to a rideable state - and this was after I had a professional MTA check done on it too.

After that experience I'm strongly leaning towards buying my next bike new. Taking that depreciation hit isn't such a big deal so long as you're intending on keeping the bike for a long time.

I had a guy try to talk me into getting one of these new 600s at that time and it was just slightly out of my price range, plus I knew I wouldn't be keeping my next bike for very long. At those prices though I would've probably bought one if I could've kept it long term.

New bike = warranty, plus peace of mind that no one's fucked it up.

And if you get a brand spanker at rock bottom price...the depreciation is fuck all too. And yeah...over a long term it matters not anyway. Despite having had many (most new)...I still get a stiffy over getting a new bike!

Well, that thread went off on a tangent. Not that I'm complaining mind...

Anyway, thanks Crasherfromwayback for the offer of a free flight to Welly, but work will be flying me down there enough anyway, and it's just convenient for me to have the same dealer whom I bought it off just down the road, and will get them to do all the servicing etc too. Plus they have the white/grey in stock, and still doing for the special price even though it's gone back up on Suzuki NZ's website... And they're trading in the YW50 for me, so it's one less thing to deal with.
AAAAAaaanyway, long story short, pre-midlife crisis must be kicking in, cos I bit the bullet and pulled the trigger on this today. Pick it up tomorrow morning with fresh new Reg, WOF, and full tank of 98!
Oohhhh YEEEAH! My first new ...well, anything of significance, really.

So where is that Friday night Auckland ride again???? :ride:

Cheers mate. About buying the white... I agree it looks superb and I personally like it better than the decal'd up blue, but I'm concerned that it might have a lower resale value due to being a little bland, and not as showy as the blue/fluro, which some people want when they're getting a bike like this. But resale value won't be an issue for quite a few years down the track anyway, so whatever.
Thanks for the advice too, but I think I'll at least start out on "B" mode... Call me a pussy, but I'll ease into it a bit... Wait; phrasing?

Any things I should know, tips, tricks etc about the Gixxer?

I like the slipper clutch. I've ridden one or two high compression bikes without that, and things got a bit hairy when downshifting in the wet down a hill sometimes... Two things I'm not a fan of on the instrument panel are that there's no fuel gauge, and when you put the trip meter or odo up on the display, the clock goes away. But I'll live with that, not biggies. I also have no idea how to set up the suspension properly for me with all the adjustment settings, but I'll try to teach myself that stuff.

Beat the shit out of it. And yep...slipper clutches are ace on high comp bikes. Don't mess with the suspension until you've done a few hundred km's. The seals (The stiction...a Honda word) hold quite firm on the fork legs/shock shaft from new. Once settled in you're have a fair better idea of how it feels for your weight/riding. Enjoy!

Coleman's has a demo 750 if you're in Auckland. No demo 600's though. They had 2 blue and 2 white 2015 model 600's (one less white one now) and they have a new 2014 model 600 at the same price but with included ORC's and a slip-on go-loud muffler, can't remember what brand. I opted for the 2015 as I want it to still be quiet when I'm not fanging it.

My one had 4 Kms on the clock when I picked it up.
Been for a little bit of a ride today, and oh wow, does it go! Even taking it gently because of breaking it in and new tyres. I'm going to be pretty kind to it for the first 1000kms until the first service is done. Even so, it's the fastest thing I've ever ridden. But stable and safe feeling too, and the clutch is light and the brakes so responsive, that riding around the city in traffic was no more difficult than an old FXR150 I used to have. So far, a very nice unit, I'm impressed.

Good stuff. The white is great - the blue will look dated in a couple of years - like those 90's fluro stickered sports bikes.

But I'm torn, do I try and re-live my youth which was spent wringing the guts out of an Impulse ( still my fav bike that I've owned ) or stick with the lazy sedate linear power of the SV ( which I also love ).

Cheers. I seriously recommend doing so... It's really easy to ride - as easy as a commuter bike - and it goes like stink, and it hasn't even loosened up yet... For the price, I couldn't be happier.

Cheers. I immediately liked the white better, both in pics, and in the flesh. Also, it's a really nice pearlescent metallic fleck white too, not a flat white. And that's what I thought, that the graphical one will date really fast. Next year the racers will have a new colour scheme, and the blue/fluro will just look old. White/grey is a pretty timeless combo.
