View Full Version : Remedy found for those cutting corners in Paradise

On one particular corner in the Kawerau gorge here in Paradise ... Police have often focused on photographing those crossing the double yellow center lines. Well .. no more. The remedy has been found and installed.
Below is a few recent pics of the corner in question. The skid marks on the road tell a few stories .... :shifty:
The yellow posts go for 200 meters total.
A few posts missing (already) and tyre marks on most ...

Imagine a campervan coming round that corner and just clipping a post enough to send it flying in to the path of a rider going the other way. Clearly if some are missing they are getting hit. That'll be a nice surprise as you set up for the corner at night.
In one direction (your 4th photo) you can see clearly that there are no vehicles coming and thus is is not unsafe to cut the corner. Fuck, it was a decent overtaking opportunity until the double yellows got painted. If there were a shed load of crashes caused by people crossing the centre line here then I could understand it, but there aren't any. So all that has happened is an unnecessary hazard has been introduced for all road users but one that could be particularly bad for motorcyclists. And only a week or two before MSAC come down here and tell us about all the good work they are doing making the roads safer for motorbike riders.
Bollocks.

Bit like the Rimutaka Hill...it just had to have that solid double yellow all the way across

Statistically campervan drivers are bad for keeping left anyway. They look a lot safer for a bike to hit than the Cheese Cutter barriers though and maybe they will install them if these don't work. Some of you will just have to slow down a bit more on that road eh?

or they could have stood a stack of dogs in a line down the middle... but they'd probably still get collected by fuckwits claiming they're moving 'too fast"

To be fair ... I took the pic standing off the road on the hard right hand side of the road. 50 meters to the cliff face as the road veers to the right and then left up the hill.
Had I taken it more to the left ... you would lose sight of the uphill bit very soon after that point.
Interestingly ... visitors to the area have less issue with this corner than the locals ... go figure ...

If anyone was going to pick up the wrong end of the stick it was you. Statistically campervans are wider than cars and therefore much more likely to hit these posts. As are trucks, and buses, as witnessed by the fact that at least three of them were down at the weekend, just waiting to be flicked back in to the lane by a passing vehicle. My concern is with a post being knocked out and flung towards someone riding past, the type of incident that is almost impossible to avoid regardless of what speed you are riding.

They're actually a very soft plastic. You can squeeze them with your fingers. Your kids could safely have sword fight with them ...
Since they were installed a few weeks ago ... four have gone missing. It may get expensive for the authorities ... if they continually need replacing.
The average flow of traffic is slower through there now though ... and I'm through there about three times a week in a truck (often more times) and I haven't hit one yet.
Did you note the skid marks in photo three ... any ideas how they got there ... being halfway down the hill .. ???

Braking for cyclists would be my guess. The busses were the ones that used to give me the shits through there when in the spray truck or side arm mower. Apart from the CromTran truck that hit the rear wheel on the Deutz and nearly pushed me through the barrier.:shit:

Closing speed of over 100km/h? I think not. And have you noticed that the bases are coming away with a big lump of the road attached?

Not bad if you set your self up, although pointless now that the yellow lines are there.

Would still rather be hit by one of those than a campervan though. I would give up riding if I felt it was as likely to happen as much as you do. I only drive that road about once or twice a year though and may think differently if it was my everyday commuting route.
I go through there several times a month but I was actually thinking about you and everybody else who rides through the gorge, not just myself. The chance of it happening is slim, but the hazard is totally unnecessary.

Straight roads are boring.....
I go out of my way to find some nice twisty bits....
why the fuck would any biker want to straighten those bits out when they find them.....?
also not very impressed when anything comes towards me in MY lane....
forget about soft yellow dildos...

No.

Apart from the fact that most motorists ignore the double yellows here ... this corner can be taken at/near the open road speeds ... without issues.
Experienced motorcyclists should have no bother with this road. Unless they are used to Motorways ...

On this bit of road ... those leaning into the right hand corners might get "Tapped" on the head by one of those soft yellow dildo's ...

I hit poles of this type at about 80kph in my first year of riding. I was avoiding a truck that didn't like the fact that I honked at them when they tried to park on my 30 seconds earlier.
Even though they hit my largely unprotected knee (jeans only) I didn't feel a thing. They just bent under my and sprang back afterwards. I would've been history if they were cheese graters.

I wasn't talking about riding along and hitting one, I was talking about one being hit by oncoming traffic and it being thrown at you. I'd rather not have to take avoiding action just there given the lack of run off on either side.

Never happened. There has not been a crash on that corner for years.
Like you said earlier, it is the locals who cut the corner so perhaps I should have said bus or truck rather than campervan. It was the width of the vehicle I was highlighting, not any particular driving practices.

With the big yellow dildos in place ... unlikely at that corner. The poles are only on 200 meters of the roadway. Plenty of road in the rest of the gorge you can (and have been) get/been clobbered by a campervan.
