Hi there
Thinking about getting a body kit to protect the new bike.
Anyone had the 3M paint protection installed? If so what did you think? Worth the money?
Im getting quoted $350-500.
Cheers

3M Venture Shield? Does exactly what it says on the tin, and it's well worth the price you've quoted (assuming that is a fitted price). They laser cut those niggers out so even lackadaisical Kiwis can't fuck it up too badly. Get it done before you pick it up.

$300-500 sounds cheap to me, but then from memory a GSR is a semi-naked bike. I've heard quotes as high as $800-1000 for faired supersports.
Good investment in my opinion. I assume 3M are good quality.

+1. Had it on both the Blackbird and the Triple. Near-invisible and works perfectly. Had the Blackbird done at a car place in Hamilton and the Triple by a guy based in Tauranga but he also travels to Hamilton and Auckland.

All positive then!
My bike is matte black. I hear they do a non glossy version, so will enquire.
thanks for the feedback. Should be money well spent as looking to keep this bike for a while.

I've used stone guard on my bikes including my current bike to protect any areas I'm concerned about. Great product, you can't tell it's on there if done properly.

Ok so the matte black is more expensive, so its $500 to cover most of the bike (yes the GSR is a naked bike)
$350 was a quote just to cover the front of the bike and tank.
It does sound good, but Im gonna get a few quotes and find out how much of that cost is labour. Ive been told it should only take an hour or so to fit.
It does sound like a no brainer....but if I sell the bike in a couple of years wont people expect scratches and stone chips? Will the protection kit add any value? Im not so sure, but I know if I get a massive stone chip on my fairing next week Ill be gutted ha ha.
Anyways, cheers for the advice. Just gotta decide whether to part with the cash or not

If your going to cut cost and do it yourself I strongly suggest still paying someone to do the tank. DIY the fairings.

I just got quoted for the kit separately.....$105.
$400 labour costs? Sounds a bit pricey to me.
Don't get me wrong I would definitely get a dodgy finish doing it myself but wonder if anyone would just fit the kit for me.

Is this the same product as the 3M film stuff that comes in rolls?
I've been thinking of getting some and applying it to my tank. I only want a small area on both sides of the tank. No bigger than an A4 size of paper on each side.

Well, my bike's got OK(ish) paintwork, except for the tank. Years of using a magnetic tankbag has left the tank with nasty scratches from little bits of magnetic grit the magnets took a fancy to. A bit of plastic film would have prevented that.

Do you know what's in the kit? I'm sure that when my Street Triple was fitted with the 3M kit 5 years ago it was more than that (just for the kit itself - labour on top). Just seems a bit light. I got mine professionally done and happy to pay as it was a flawless job with no air bubbles.

I talked to a vehicle signage company and they were willing to cut to fit whatever I needed. Don't know if all would cut the pieces needed so ask around.
It meant I would only have paid for the stone guard actually needed and a small cost to cut & shape the pieces. In the end I had them quote to also install.

Meh - layers and layers of polish!
BUT you've a matt paint - what are you meant to clean/treat that with? Can you get a flat wax? Never thought of that before.

I found the kit on the tankslapper nz website. They do two types of product but this was for the matt finish 3M product. It's pretty much identical price to the UK.
That's a good point actually! It's brand new so not had to clean it yet....but most of the products I have do give a glossy finish? Hmmmm...
The 3M will make it easier to clean too i spose

Hey there
Has the kit installed. I was initially happy with it but on closer inspection I'm pretty annoyed.
The kit was precut, but the guy used a blade to trim the edges and I can see small nicks in the paintwork.
He is coming to reassess next week but where do I stand? They are tiny but that isn't the point. It's a brand new bike and the dude has allowed the blade to go across the surface of bike.
Any advice would be great....am I overreacting or would you be pretty pis*ed off?

Did the nicks expose any of the metal? Where are they?

Does the film provide UV protection to the paint or just physical protection?

Post some pictures of the nicks. By the sound of it, I'd be pissed too. The point of pre-cut kits is to avoid the use of a blade on your paintwork. But it might not be as bad as it looks.

There a few bubbles, some debris under the kit. I don't understand why it would need to be trimmed. They advertise is an exact fit for bike?
I would be annoyed if I were in your shoes. The cuts that have been made on the bike aren't rounded and cutting it while on the bike is surely poor form given they are made FOR the bike model.
That first photo with the bolt in it is a shocking job - looks like the film has been applied inside the hole which overtime will peel off since it is not on a flat surface? Not to mention the jagged cuts.
At the end of the day they probably aren't that noticeable, but given it is your bike you will notice it.
How much did you pay?

Any advice would be great....am I overreacting or would you be pretty pis*ed off?Brand new bike? Don't even sweat it. Make a claim on your insurance, provide his details on the claim form. Accept nothing less than brand new OEM replacement panels. FFS if you had wanted an amateur job, you could have saved $400 and done it yourself.
The only imperfection I've found on mine is the odd stray pieces of lint. They're effectively impossible to see though, and I can think of no practical way that they (Lets Get Graphic IIRC) could have done it better.

Ok so on reflection...
Scratches are barely visible...I know that's not the point, but if the film is defective in a year or two this guy will be the one to fix it. He has been out and will replace untidy film panels.
I didnt think about using insurance tbh, but I cant see them accepting it tbh. The photos do look worse than it is...., plus $500 excess.
Just curious mate..how much did you pay?

$410+GST through Lets Get Graphic.
You don't pay your excess, you make the other guy do it, and if he doesn't you go to the disputes tribunal. He can't take to your bike with a knife and get away for it, that's one of the reasons you pay for a pre-cut kit from a library rather than having it hand done.
I am absolutely not surprised though, the standard of tradesman in New Zealand is abysmal, pick any industry you like. When you find a good plumber/electrician/whatever, hang on to them. Mind you, you're another part of the problem... "Oh, they're only little knife marks in my brand new motorcycle, it doesn't matter." FFS grow a pair.
