View Full Version : Can I pigeon-hole types of motorcyclists? Yeah sure can

A noisy old bandit and its rider roared past me and some other cars at a busy Tauranga Intersection, on the weekend.
He quickly looked left and right at the giveway, snuck up between two cars which had to brake slightly. and rev hard past a few other cars never to be sighted again. Here the point, I saw the rider and his black helmet and old jacket and noisy bike in my rear vision mirror and I guessed that he would do exactly what he did. I pidgeon holed him.
Got me wondering as a guy on a old BMW with a bright hiviz and silver helmet came up behind us a few minutes later, he stayed behind doing 100km/hr for about 10km till we got to a passing lane and he passed. I pidgeon holed this guy too.
Question: just by looking at a bike and the rider , how the rider is dressed, ie black helmet, can tell how he / she will behave?
For instance : I do not see many V Rod riders just toddle off from the lights, its normally full blast.
I dont think I have ever passed a Huyabusa in my car or many sports bikes for that matter.
Maybe its the colour of the helmet, black hemets are noiser and go faster, coloured helmets go fast and a bit quieter.
White helmets go slow, silvery helmets are normally on dual purpose bikes, Dark red helmets are Honda Riders? Blue helmets are Suzuki riders.
Wonder if the cops are of the same mind?

Probably wear a red white and blue helmet, mostly a conservative sensible rider.

Got a Gloss black zx14r. Have a one piece black leather suit and a 2 piece black set plus I have 2 gloss black helmets. To mix it up I have black race boots or could wear black J Rebbs. I have black race gloves or black touring gloves. My trailer is black also.
Im not sure what this means. A lot of cars pass me but I don't allow lycra boys to pass me ever.

That you wear a red helmet and your sexuality is questionable?

All i know is when i wear my black gear on the bike i get pulled up by the boys in blue for the usual excuses. However when im wearin the high vis jacket............ Nout?!
So i get it then in black im some sort of 'road goon'
But with the high vis on what does that mean? Am i invisible or now classed as sensible?!?!?!?!?!?

It's more to do with the psychology involved, mainly in your mind this pigeon holing thing is.
Just like women who all sit around saying "I knew something was going to happen" when little Timmy sticks his dick in a german shepard's mouth and it gets eaten. Because they had a feeling when they got him an icecream earlier and they can tell shit will go down when he gets icecream and eats the left side first.
You're most likely imagining it, we see and remember what we want and how we want.
Also, don't get gobbies from angry dogs.

Probably pigeon holing several situations for each rider, based more so on the riders road presence. If one of the imagined situations comes true, he feels as though he could tell the future.
I'm sort of the same, every vehicle I imagine several situations, one where they do as they should, and several situations where they fuck up or drive erratically. Chances are, for the majority of vehicles, what they do, I would have predicted it.... Just I predicted several situation for each person.

I think you should send that analysis to ACC so that they can set up the appropriate categories for user pays. Perhaps ask them for a grant to research it further. Must be worth a $30 rise in fees.

I'm sure we all pigeonhole or stereotype someone on exterior first impressions. Attitude of a vehicle, whether it be car/bike/truck gives away the intent of its operator, at least that's how I operate. While one could argue some types do favour certain types of riding apparel, I'd class that as merely circumstantial evidence.
I ride a Hayabusa, have a white helmet, black one piece leathers and two piece fabric hi-viz type getup. I guess you would pigeonhole me depending on what I was wearing on the day rather than my riding style at the brief moment you observed me?

I ride a Bandit, I have a black helmet and I ride in black leathers with a soft jerkin over the top ... You don't want to watch my riding ... (A couple of weekends ago when I blasted passed a bike, two cars and an artic truck at some speed that would have seen me walking if the popo had seen .. a mate said "that's the craziest thing I've ever seen you do ..." )
So Ok if you want to pidgeonhole me, then who am I to argue ...

Today I was followed by a guy in one of those huge Audi Q7's. He pulled out from an intersection behind me, refused to tailgate and then slowly dropped back until we got into the open road section with the passing lane on the first hill. As I chopped down to try and keep my momentum up, with my trailer, he dropped further back and made no attempt to pass. I was furious by this stage. How dare he refuse to conform to my expectations!

I think we all start with no prejudice.
As out peers bleat on about their experiences and we have our own we form expectations.
We form up into flocks that have a combined perception that prejudices our future experience. Mostly by filling in the blanks on the unknowns.
E.g. A non rider has no reason to know bikers are just normal people, but initially have no reason to fear us.
Add in a media filled with images of biker gangs and that perception of all bikers is that we are either all full patch members or want to be.
Add in a mate who got carved up, and another mate who ha a mirrorectomy but no inputs about how a biker can be courteous and well mannered and the perception is set.
Most of the general public does not know the difference between a Hayabusa and a sportster, many of those that do think the sportster is faster and more powerful.
A common comment when I had the Hayabusa was " when are you going to upgrade to a Harley?" When I said that was not in my future plans the response was normally, "can't you handle the power?"
Stupid phone / Tapatalk, apologies in advance.

I'm trying to see what the problem is here? That's how I ride every day - isn't that kind of the benefit/point of being on a motorcycle?
