View Full Version : A little lie down

I am in the market for a new helmet.

So this morning, on the spur of the moment, I decide to pootle up to d'Auckland and visit Motomail to try on the Scorpion range.

Get up there, no problems. Ride up College Hill and see Moto on t'other side of the road. So I stop on the centre line to wait for a space which duly arrives (a big one fortunately) and proceed to perform the u-turn. Nek minnit the whole fucking thing falls over, me included. How this happened I really don't know. Possibly too much lean before moving enough to hold the bike up. Aided perhaps by a degree of brain fade induced by d'Auckland motorway traffic. "How embarrassing" I think. :o

Can't pick it up either - too heavy and lying downhill. Fortunately several very charming young ladies turn up and help hoist all back upright. Thanks girls. :devil2:

Minor scuffs on the fairing (they do have a use after all!) and a slightly bent brake lever. No real damage - apart from to dignity of which I have very little anyway so who cares.

Scorpion helmets?

Nothing fitted well enough to be of interest. Best fit was a mere $400 but had a clip fastener instead of D-rings, was tight on the back of the head and showed an alarming degree of lift possible when pulling the front up - even more than my well worn Arai. The more expensive ones were not that comfortable either.

Guess I'll have to save the pennies and stay with Arai. And be more careful when turning around.

Just as well you admitted it was you, the video is already on Youtube...

As for helmets, I went from Arai to Shoei years ago and never looked back. Wife has a Givi and loves it.

And you don't call them scratches on the fairing, character is the correct description. Ladies helping a bike off you, I'm sure there'll be a pun or three coming about that :killingme At least it ended without a hospital stay.

Try to not fall over in front of Aucklanders in cars too much aye? They don't need much excuse to keep going...

I tell ya, you let these flatlanders come up north, give them a little hill and they're throwing themselves all over the place ;)

They get bonus points if they run over anything with two wheels.

Slofox, you're in one piece, and no bones are poking out. The rest doesn't matter.

I've got an Arai head, for which I am grateful for given I crash other peoples motorcycles with monotonous regularity.

As long as the KB rule applies: that the bike didn't travel more than its length - so it isn't classed as a "crash"...

Glad you're OK Slo!

So... Do Motomail sell frame sliders? They're just down the road from me, and I don't want to put any road decorations on the new Gixxer Sixxer. Sorry to hear about your experience, but at least there were some ladies around to help a gent in distress...

If you've got a "Shoei head", then there's only one Arai that will fit, as the shell shapes are different.
Did you get a Shoei with removable lining/padding? It's a great feature - just washed mine, and it's like a new helmet.
I really love my XR1100 - it was a revelation after years of AGVs.

I do have a Shoei which I used for only 6 months - after which time it was loose. So I went Arai and, like MBB, I have an Arai head. Scorpions came nowhere near a good fit really.

I haven't used the repair stick but have been curious about them for ages. Might have a go. Either that or The Touch Up Guys. Had great results from them before at low cost as well.

Incidentally, I took the bike to Boyds today to get the brake lever checked. Straightened out at no cost. Great service as usual.

Not a good look on College Hill... were the 'young ladies' dressed the same? - could have been a couple of Yr13s from the girls' college out for a stroll...

Ah, the silver lining of every cloud...drop the bike, but rescued by a gaggle of lovelies?? (well, plural seemed to be indicated; horizontal dancing suggests that perhaps they were "lovelies")
Bugger about dropping ya bike but it makes me feel better to know that when I can't pick up the bandit by myself it's not just 'cos I'm a girl

Seriously, just glad to hear you're in one piece and damage to your ride seems to be fairly mild

p.s. the first few times I went to motomail I hated getting in and out of their driveway (as a n00b rider).

It's purely technique, the whole lifting a motorcycle back into the position where it can fall over again thing.

p.s. The last time I was in motomail, I needed to be lifted up after fainting at the prices...

Boyds do Shoei, not Arai. Hamilton Motorcycles do Arai. But they are pissed about the change in distributor so may or may not continue with Arai.
