I haven't watched a lot of cricket until 2014/15 season.
I used to love it but lost track back when tv one stopped screening free.
The interest levels reduced as we seemed to under perform. Lots of promise and not much deliver.
Are we able to win a world cup.
Good results in the last few months and the opening game.
Is anyone else gaining interest.
I have been to two one day games and a day of a test in the last few months also. That's more live cricket than the rest of my time.

There is live screening on the net but I just run cricinfo and check scores on games we are not playing.
I put radio nz sport online for the ones that are on radio(all nz games have been advertised as being covered).
Ill hit the pub for the semi finals we are in.
Im hoping work will get offered tickets for NZ / England game in Welly.
England are falling apart in the run chase against Aus. 73/5 chasing 343 for the win

Enjoyed the game yesterday against Shrilanka - they showed a consistency not seen from them in a long long time! - Good luck to them! :corn:

They have achieved consistency as a team because they are no longer relying on the same one or two batters to do well. If a top-liner fails, someone else always seems to stand up. We no longer have the fragility we seem to have had for such a long time. Depth in bowlers is a big help too. Lose a top bowler to injury and there's always another good one to take their place.
We can win the whole thing but the hard part would be doing it in a final on an Australian track (Melbourne?) as we haven't played there for so long. Long way to go yet though and luck still does play a part.

Unfortunately Aussie cricket wants us kept down and uncompetitive on their tracks so that "they" remain the glory boys - goes right back to Bradman he was anti NZ!
Thought NZ tours were beneath his talented self and wouldn't come over here when Aussie toured here back in his day! - fuck them! :buggerd:
We just keep on playing Sri Lanka but hey they are better than Aussie at the moment - just keep watching - they will surprise you! (I hope)

I don't know much about cricket although I enjoyed summer school days watching matches.
Hadn't been to match for a decade when a mate suggested we drive to Dunedin yesterday, and see Scotland v Afghanistan.
Frankly we didn't expect much apart from a nice day in the sun. Presumably Scotland would be too strong.
However travelling to see this match turned out to be one of the most enjoyable sports events for many years. The Afghan minnows held the Scots run rate down, and then turned in a respectable batting effort themselves. Still, when Afghan needed 60 runs to win people started leaving and my mate and I decided they'd lose with dignity.
Well bugger me. They won. Outstanding. Moments like these going down to the last three deliveries are rare and can only be appreciated live at the ground.
Glad I went.

TV news showed some celebrations of the win back in Afghanistan - nice to see they had something to cheer about for a change.
(is it a real Afghan team or a bunch of Pakistani ring-ins? Its not like Afghanistan is well know in the cricket world, is it?)
Winston001
28th February 2015, 00:54
Yes I thought maybe the Afghan's were English university stars who played in the Home Counties or else in Pakistan. However their captain Mohammed Nabi grew up in a refugee camp and most of them appear to have risen from harsh lives.
One thing which was amusing: Sami Shenwari was on 86 runs when his lower order mate gave a Lance Cairns heave and was caught out. Nabi blew a fuse and gave him fifty words obviously utterly pissed off because Afghanistan really needed to preserve a wicket.
Sami Shenwari went on to loft three sixes and bat 94 runs. It was just bad luck his fourth 6 was caught because that would have brought up his hundred. This guy was crucial - three 6s in the dying moments of the game when it looked like Scotland had the wood on them. Pity he didn't reach his 100.

I think Taylors inability score runs at near a run a ball shows he shouldn't have in the side this deep into the competition and should have been replaced 2 or 3 games ago. If he uses 100 balls at 55-60% strike rate in a finals game we will get knocked out.

I agree with that but it's too late to drop him now. Hopefully his time in the middle last night will have helped him. Really glad to see McCullum and Williamson go early and the rest of the team have to win the game. They needed an innings like that SOOO much!

Yep. That's why I said 2-3 games ago. Hes going to need play big shots or go out trying in a large scoring game. Using up a large amount of balls scoring slowly increases pressure on the other players coming to the crease to not get their eye in before scoring.

Impossible to predict outcome but in a game against a larger target 60% run rate for an extended period is likely to cost the game.
Its now to late to have another option as a replacement. Gamble was taken he would come right but he is not looking good at the moment. I am hoping like everyone else that he will but its got to be straight away if other batters fail in the top order.

What a nail biter!! I couldn't take my eyes off the tv. After Vettori scampered through on that 3rd to last ball (amazingly I thought) I wondered how on earth Elliot was going to cope with the weight of expectation on his shoulders. But he was obviously in the zone and knew it was his for the taking.
Poor hubby, who is not such a die hard fan as me and was asleep, was unceremoniously woken by me shrieking and bouncing around like a mad thing.
I even managed to feel for the SA 's (just a little bit) seeing de Villier's distress at the captains interview after the game. But it didn't last long.
Go the Black Caps!!!
Amen to that. :D
Naturally there was lots of shouting and hoopla on TV on Wednesday. I think that is the most exciting cricket match I've ever seen. It should live long in our memories.
But dammit those loathsome TV news/sports etc people couldn't leave it at that. Instead of celebrating a truly extraordinary game and pausing to let everyone have at least a days celebration, no - they had to poison the well. The pricks (in my not so humble opinion) ended each gushing commentary with a question - how will the Black Caps do on Sunday?
Ordinarily that would be fair, but not here, not when NZ have just won a match within seconds of losing it.
Win or lose on Sunday, the South Africa match will be the enduring memory of this tournament.

How many times has he broken the stumps without the ball in hand or taken the bails off before the ball has arrived.
And there are the bounce catches they claim. Remember that don't ask Dyer thing from a few years past.
There should be some sort of penalty for cheating.

Day night rules - 50 over matches.
3.8 Use of lights
If in the opinion of the umpires, natural light is
deteriorating to an unfit
level, they shall authorize the ground authorities
to use the available
artificial lighting so that the match can continue
in acceptable
conditions.
I just wonder why during games when the shadows hit the pitch (like MCG CWC final) that the lights are not requested to even the lighting out?
This is not a grizzle it is a question that always springs to mind during these games.
Most of the damage to NZ by Australia was during this phase of the shadows and bright light as the sun began setting.
This thought crossed my mind when NZ chose to bat - I do not know the CWC rules on this but Google gave me the above rule quote.
Does anybody know the answer?

FYI I am happy that the better team won - I am just curious about the shadows and light factor during late afternoon games at these stadiums!
If you look at the conditions (rules) for these games it appears that the players can appeal to the umpires for lights! - why don't they?
My question is whether or not it makes any difference at that stage of the day? - I don't know and am asking if anyone else does?
150km ball coming out of the light into the shadows (and vice versa) in only 10 meters is a lot for an eye to make adjustments!
Curiously that is the period most damage was done on Sunday - same but opposite from the other end - no complaints - we won the toss and chose to bat first!
Was watching a 1st 15 rugby tournament today and yesterday - they never played to the conditions and field layout to their advantage!
Wonder what the coaches are thinking about? - been there and done all that long ago - used to work OK for us!

OK - I will take you at face value - why do you presume to answer for the umpires?
If a team captain asks for lighting consideration surely they must take it seriously and be prepared to take responsibility for their decision - conditions have changed!
Presumably this did not occur but my question is what if they did? Do the ICC rules apply or are there special CWC rules? - I could only find ICC rules!
I have been to the MCG and the shadows are just as severe as they appear on TV it must be very difficult for the batsman's eyes to adjust.
Hence my question - would the lights actually make any difference in those circumstances and do the rules cater for appeal against it?

Why do you think that BMac didn't ask for the light?
How many times do you think anyone has asked for the light in those circumstances (and the answer may surprise you)?
As for why I would "answer for the umpires" - I've played the game all my life and have been an umpire in the past.

Why do you think that BMac didn't ask for the light? - I don't - I have no idea!
How many times do you think anyone has asked for the light in those circumstances (and the answer may surprise you)? - I don't know - that's why I asked!
As for why I would "answer for the umpires" - I've played the game all my life and have been an umpire in the past. - well there you go!
Thank you - that is why I asked the question - so that someone who knows could tell me!
So we can assume the question of lighting during that period would have been considered and fully covered by the rules!
I wondered if it might be just an oversight that everybody simply accepted but today's lighting is so powerful I also wondered if they would be more effective now!
That is the only thing that I could see that might be overlooked in a decision to bat first but couldn't see them missing it.
The Aussie's were just too bloody good on the day!
If you had simply answered the question in the first place without being smarmy I would have appreciated your answer immediately!

In all sincerity, how the Blackcaps played in the recent CWC, certainly increased the profile of One Day Cricket to what it used to be like 30 years ago. The euphoria genuinely erupted because of the winning streak during the tournament. Lets just wait and see if that kicks on next season.
