I believe it worse out Rangiora way (Biff, Dangerous and Rashika) but I was lucky enough to get someone to pick me up for work otherwise I would have been on the bike.

Has anyone ridden in snow before? Whats it like?

It's only a problem when you can't see road markings, signs kerbs etc - and it doesn't look too bad in those pics.

Well, I have to say - christchurch bikers are poofy wimps.

Took the bike out for a ride this morning, got to tech for a class - only one other biker there. Had a quick ride around to see what the rest of the city center was like. Did I see any other bikes on the road - no. Poofs the lot of em :)

Its only a foot deep.

Rain has kicked in heavy now, so will all probably be gone by a little after lunch. Also a bit of lightning.

I went back down there on holiday just as the 92 dump landed and it was the biggest I have ever seen especially out on the Peninsula towards Akaroa. Not sure how it compares to today the locals will have to tell us that.

Looking at the webcams it's not as bad.

In the 92 one I had to dig 2 feet of snow from the front of the garage so I could get the car out. That was a wild drive let me tell you. I went to my parents and was the first loon to drive most streets. Had to stop partway down their driveway as the powerline was down and in the middle of the road. That explained why I couldn't ring them. The board that had power/phone joining the house had ripped off. I spent the rest of the day folding sheets at the hotel where my girlfriend (now wife) worked. At least it was warm with all the industrial dryers going flat out.

Looks interesting out there but nothing like the big snow of '92...THAT was way more exciting...what with no power and all...and having my mum wake me up at 6am to dig her out so she could out on chains and go to work. I was at uni then and enjoying a sleep-in on the holidays.

here a few pics taken about 9 am this morning, in Spreydon...we often get it a little heavier over that way.
Note my wee baby getting a chill...nah she loves it! :2thumbsup

Now what is it with schools closing people being sent home from work bloody hell the city grinds to a hault just cos of a bit of white shit on the ground.

Other parts of the world have a shit lot more than 50mm of snow on the ground 6 months of the year.... and nothing changes there life goes on.

Now the dumbest shit I saw this morning (while carrying on as a normal day  ) a chick had a full covering of snow over her wind shield and car and was hanging out the drivers window while cornering on Moorhouse ave with one arm out wiping a 100x200mm patch on the windscreen to see out off...... fuk wit  I shit you not

Should have thrown a large-size snow ball through the window of that dozey bitch you saw driving with snow on her 'screen - it couldn't make her drive any worse!

Has anyone ridden in snow before? Whats it like?

I get the opportunity to do it a few times each year. Such as this morning at 20 to 6 when it started snowing. I happened to be riding back to work.

I quite like riding in snow. Only if it's only once or twice a year though. Good fun challenge. Except this morning because I wasn't wearing my motorbike jacket. So I was cold.

It's like slinging through gravel at speed where your backwheel is spinning too fast for your front wheels liking. If you know you are in control it can be fun. - (I probably need medical attention?)

When I go down hills I litely tap my back brake only. Probably no fun riding with double disc back brakes.

How does it compare to the dump in 92 ??

Not even close, in 92 all the snow was dumped overnight and there was a lot more of it so it was fairly thick trying to drive to work, today it didn't start until about 7.30 so the traffic was already on the road and it wasn't getting a chance to settle with the vehicles driving through it all the time, still it gave me an excuse to go home early

I can see blue sky and sunlight outside so I guess I will have to turn up tomorrow though

I think the weather predictions were for this snow dump to be worse than the 92 lot, but must admit seems unlikely now. But we've closed for the day at work about 1.30 (err just when the snow stopped and it started clearing) but apparently theres another dump on its way with high winds as well. Dunno if going to work tomorrow or not?

Saw something similiar too, what happens is they have the windscreen clear, but when they stop at the lights a bit too quickly, the lump of snow on their roof slides onto the windscreen, leaving them looking puzzled as what to do next! :shit:

& another example. I was going along between hagley park near the hospital this morning & a red bus was coming the oppersite direction. He was going way fast for the conditions, all i could see was a tidal wave of snow & slush coming at me.then wack...I couldnt see sh..t ,had to hit the brakes and try to find the wipers.( i wasnt in my car ).

I like watching the 4-wheel-drive people speeding because they think they have more traction. Only to discover that snow on a bitumen surface works like ice. Just because it works off road in a mud-puddle, doesnt mean it works in the city. Saw two of em slide into the gutters today. Plonkers.

Noticed all the 2-wheel-drive vehicles taking it slowly - so they are not all total idiots.

So Christchurch ground to a halt, bus services were suspended, schools closed - and all because of a little snow. Poofdas.

Yep Sniper - it was worse in Rangoon than in ChCh by about 10zm - but it was still just a smattering of snow compared to back home.

It made me wonder how much panic would set in if we were to have really heavy snow.

As for riding in the snow - that doesnt make you hard - it makes you stupid, if you've got a choice.
