Right, I've got a website hosted by Orcon but they are discontinuing legacy hosting whatever that is and I need to find someone else. Are there any advantages in having a site hosted by an NZ company? I imagine the speed difference is not up to much anyway.

Any recommendations? This lot look cheap but have never heard of them - http://www.kiwiwebhost.co.nz/

Big Dave had a thread a while ago.

Essentially, I think the gist was, get cheap from the states, get cheap service, aka, perhaps they'll give you a response in a few days.

Not saying all hosts in NZ would be fantastic, but I guess it's the usual rule of thumb that you get what you pay for...

If its a simple website for your own personal amusement/family friends - then sure a Cheap and nasty NZ webhost will be fine so too will a US based Webost

If your website is say the key part of your business and you do $1,000's+ of trading through it everyday - think about this - can you afford to have the website down for a couple of days? if the answer is no - then paying a little more for a reputable NZ based webhost (cause they will answer issues in NZ time, not US time) is the way to go

http://nzservers.com/

Have used him for over a decade, always on hand.

I tinkered with godaddy for a while but the website load times were real slow for NZ.

My customers are mostly based in the US, so I use greengeeks.com. I have been with them for 4 years. They have responded instantly every time via their live chat support, and where it needs to be escalated to 2nd level support, I get a response/help within a hour or two, no matter what time I have logged the call. Obviously I administer my sites here in NZ and the speed is fine for me. I'm using their VPS service. You sure get a lot of control over your server via the WHM which sits above the usual Cpanel interface.

I use Tract for my hosting, formerly BarkHost - an NZ company that I think was swallowed up by a Australian one. They've been very good.

By comparison, a friend of mine has a site hosted by GoDaddy in the states and has had huge issues with the speed and how slow it is.

I've found Openhost to be damned fine in terms of performance and service.

I used Kiwiwebhost extensively in the past, and they were great until they were taken over by orcon.

Anyhow, they are still good value but the help desk is fucking retarded.

real fucking retarded

Still a better option then fuckheads like godaddy who I currently use, Those fuckers need to be tied to their bed while their house gets set on fire.

I like the interface, but x2 on the support.

I used to spend time on a software forum that godaddy got slagged off on all the time. Can't believe they are still going. Kiwiwebhost eh? All I need is some site storage and a couple of emails, it is not a huge traffic site but good for publicity. $1 a week sounds too good to be true and so far I think it is. Can't FTP using the address they gave me, can't use the cpanel with the address they gave me and so far the help desk response has't arrived. They have till Tuesday then I am cancelling. Was quite happy with Orcon over the years but then I never needed the help desk, it just worked.
