Girlfriend just brought me a PSP and CMR game
Will be checking on the net, but what are the must have accessories?
And what cool hacks can be done to it?
I don’t suppose UMD burners are available?

Lots of hacks available but only if you have the 1.5 firmware or earlier, not sure what the nz ones come with. I've had mine for about 6 months now, just got 3 games, no accessories. Want to get colin mcrae, but no money. Don't need extra chargers although they could come in handy. They last alot longer than you would think, 6 hours gaming, 8 or more for movie watching and over 10 listening to music. I'd say the only thing you need to get is a 1gig or so mem stick. If you have the one with 1.5 firmware then you can download games off the net and play off there. No burners available yet.

No UMD burners are going to be made available EVER. Well that's what it looks like at this stage. Remember Sony has a large "Entertainment" division that they're trying to protect, so want you to buy all thes movies on UMD even though you may have legitimately purchased them already on DVD.
The only option is to get a 512MB/1GB memory stick or cf(?) card. There are quite a few third party apps that will convert your movie of choice to MPEG-4. From what I've read one standard size movie will fit on a 512 card, so I'd definitely go for the 1GB if you can afford it.
Arstechnica had a good review, including mention of Sony's abyssmal handling of the dead pixels issue.

I'm entering this post from my PSP.
Mine came with a 2.0 software upgade which I installed.
So far it's a pretty cool toy. I think it will be most usefull for those boring family functions like Xmas.

Shit, that took awhile to type out on the PSP. Don't think I'll be doing that too often.
Movies look really good and the web browser is easy to use. Looking forward to more games coming out. The new GTA for PSP should be interesting.

With its hard drive, I believe emulators are available for all the old classic games. Load and play if you like those sort of things.
I have an article about that (from Craccum I think) somewhere if you want it.

It doesn't have a hard drive but can take memory sticks. Can get 2gb ones for it now, quite expensive though.
There is a big scene for running emulators etc. You can get emulators for virtually every console over 10 years old, gameboy, atari, nes, snes... (many others aswell). Best thing I've found so far is a program that you run which will play iso's of games which you can download off bittorrent. I've got about 10 extra games now, pretty awesome :2thumbsup. Although you have to be running the 1.5 firmware or earlier to be able to run it. No firmware roll back hacks have been found yet but might be sooner rather than later.

Yep, downloaded WipEout iso in anticipation of 2.0 being cracked.
I also heard that a buffer overflow has been found in 2.0 so expect 2.1 soon.

Yeah I've got wipeout and reckon its pretty crap, not really into those type of games anyway. Want to get colin mcrae 5, looks pretty cool.
Yeah heard about the buffer overflow found in 2.0 firmware, read here http://www.ps2nfo.com/

A firmware downgrader has been released. I have downgraded from 2.0 to 1.5 ok. I haven’t been able to get any of my iso's to run yet. Will keep trying.
k14
28th September 2005, 19:16
The program that i use to run the isos is called umd emulator. Runs really easy with that, just copy the program into the correct directory's and then copy the iso's onto the mem stick and bobs your uncle. Played 3 or 4 games that i have downloaded no problems so far. Site i downloaded it from isn't working atm, but if you want I can email it to you.

Awesome. I can only play a few of the games that I have downloaded. All of the others won't fit on my 512mb mem card, lol. Oh well, just have to wait till I can buy a 2 gig, then I will be in business.

28th September 2005, 20:19
Yep, I started downloading Medievil until I realized at 960mb, it won’t fit on a 1gig stick. But I found a smaller version without the cut scenes at 317mb.

Rockstar announced today that their upcoming PSP opus Grand Theft Auto Liberty City Stories will feature Wi-Fi multiplayer for up to 6 players. Seven modes will be available, but only two have been revealed so far; Liberty City Survivor, a basic deathmatch style game and Protection Racket, which splits players into teams which must protect (or destroy) a number of different limousines at bases somewhere in the city.
All I need now is someone else who own a PSP.

Let's just hope the right-wing fundies don't try and ban this one after the "Hot doorknob Mod" or whatever it was from San Andreas.
Is LCS going to have a proper storyline, such as SA or VC? Or am I talking out my AH?

Pretty keen to get one of these gems shortly but am a bit confused about what it can do.
1. Online play. I know it has 802.11b and you can play between other PSPs (in the same room anyway) but can you play over the web?
2. Few sites will admit to it but all the games are out there on the net if you know where to look eh? :innocent:
3. If youre ripping DVD movies to memory stick, how big are your files. I have read that some programs are ripping them to 128MB memory sticks. Yummy...I wouldnt mind that. Youd be able to stick a few movies on the one 1GB stick.
So do you use yours much? Love it? I woudnt be using it much for music (have a iPod nano), mostly movies and games. Like to play Fifa, 1st p-shootems, GT4, WRC etc. Would to use it for PC automation...ie a VNC remote control type thing.
I have some other questions but cant remember at this stage.
Thanks

Their okay but you need a decent sized 2gb! memory stick to be really useful. Hopefully the next gen will have a built in HD.
At least with the PS2 games are easier to copy and you can download them.

Got it, love it, always playing on it. Never thought I would have much use for one until the girlfriend brought it for me.
Must have game GTA: Liberty City Story's. Also just got Daxter and it's a very good platformer. Colin McRae is also worth a look if ya like rally racers.
The GTA cheat is bloody brilliant. It can give you the hunter (Apache AH-64) even thou it's not in the game. It can do much more interesting stuff to make the game last longer like making the motorbike an unstoppable object so you can hoon down the street smashing police cars and 4x4s out of your way.
Need a decent sized memory stick if you want to start putting movies on it. Remember the more you shrink it, the crappier it's gonna look. Don't actually bother watching movies on it, too small. UMD movies sales are also slumping.
4 and 8 GB sticks will be out soon, but so will a PSP with 8GB internal memory and video output according to rumors.
Haven't tried network play.

Forget about playing it in the sun, can't see shit. It's still a bloody good buy and a mod chip will be available soon.
There's only one site I visit, http://pspupdates.qj.net/
And I brought stuff from http://www.lik-sang.com
A must have is the Logitech PlayGear Pocket (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/US/EN,CRID=2362,CONTENTID=10181) for protecting your PSP.
Clear screen protectors are also a good buy. I use the Hori Liquid Crystal Filters (http://www.lik-sang.com/info.php?category=306&products_id=6232&).
Best game disc holder is the Airform UMD Pocket (http://www.lik-sang.com/info.php?category=306&products_id=7204&).
and after reading many reviews I brought a pair of Sennheiser PMX 60 headphones (http://www.sennheiser.com/nordic/icm_eng.nsf/root/04917). They sound great with good base. I tried many others but none sounded as good. They have also been at the bottom of my bag with heavy stuff dumped on top of them and they're still fine.

Bought one of these bad boys yesterday.
I basically bought it to play Fifa World Cup. I play this game (rented) on a mates PS2 so I dont get to play it often enough.
Dammit if my game didnt upgrade the firmware to a version that isnt crackable/exploitable (v2.01 - v2.60).
Initial impressions: screen is lovelly at night, but a bit tricky during the day. Not a biggie, maybe down to the complexity of the graphics on this game. Finding the ergos a bit tricky. My neck is friggin sore :) but Ive always had probs with my neck getting stuck.
Purchases: a 1st person shooter soon, 1GB memory stick, maybe Logitech case, GPS when it comes out ;).

Go with a 2gb stick. They sell on Trademe for around $100. Better than $125 for a 1Gb from Bond and Bond.
Battlefeild 2 was meant to be out for PS2 by now, but might have to wait a while longer. Couple of FPS out, but none are really worth it.
I still enjoy the fact you can download quite a few bits and peices for the PSP and most are easy to set up and use.

Thought I would update I what fun Ive been having my with PSP.
So I now own:
Fifa World Cup $89.95 - Very cool. Not that good at it, and am getting quite frustrated with myself not doing very well with it. Too many nil-all draws when playing semi-pro difficulty. Missing a 'practice' facility in the game. Very replayable though.
WRC $49.95 - have only played this a little, but is quite difficult. Was a smart-arse and tried to start on a hard level. Even novice is quite difficult. Bit preoccupied with soccer and Tiger Woods but will no doubt get around to it soon.
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2006 $49.95 - Quite good. Analogue swings and putting. Graphics quite good. Kicked Mrs Doubtfires butt and theres quite a good pro-shop facility. Really enjoying it and was doing quite well, until I lost the save game for it. Nevermind. Quite replayable and not bored yet.
Playgear Playpocket (Orange) $22 - bought this on trademe (about half price new). Very cool. Dont really play games whilst using it but good for listening to music and transporting.
UMD Movie: Into The Blue $19.95 - Bought mainly to watch Jessica Alba :). Quite nice to watch movies on the PSP...might buy a couple more (Fifth Element if cheap).
Been playing around with compressing movies. Have a laptop so theres not too much advantge here. Top Gear episodes are fun to watch and to show off to like mind gadget freaks though. Music is nice to have on the PSP, but already own a Nano, so shouldnt invest too much in much larger sticks for more music.
www.perooz.com has some nice downloadable magazines. FHM, Stuff, some car mags etc. Very cool. Lots of babe-wallpaper type things if youre into that kinda thing :innocent:. Looking forward to trying to surf the net on the PSP soon. Getting signed up on Wednesday :woohoo:
Theres a firmwear downgradder for v2.62. Thought I would enjoy what i have before trying and potentially stuffing my toy up for good. Just incase I cock it up. Wont be modchipping it anytime soon.
