can't be any worse that Mike Sabin. Now that is going to be interesting to see pan out, once the bugger looses his name supression. :)
Or how good would have been for the country if this Osborne guy would have won....if Joyce would let him speak?
the only thing that I want to know is how much all these Star National MP's in their limosines have cost us the Tax Payers?
Could we get Mike Sabin and the National Party donors to re-fund the cost to the treasury?

Must admit I've been bewildered in recent years at what people build as holiday homes. Veritable mansions compared to the farm cottage my dad grew up in - and his parents as farmers were relatively well off compared to most.
The holiday crib I was eventually lucky enough to share with other people consisted of two Tiwai workers huts joined together with a leaking roof and no insulation at all. Continually spent various sums on plumbing and replacing a frozen superheater. Aye but we were lucky... :D
Not what I expected from a speech..........:msn-wink:

Now Winston - The hot air balloon, the perpetual state beneficiary, the spanner in the beurocratic machine - Peters, gets to play king maker again.

This is extremely good for New Zealand. No matter what you think of Winnie, he's an extremely effective politician who will drag this government back towards the centre.
And beats the hell out of that kiddy fiddler Sabin that the Nats stood behind.
Gremlin
28th March 2015, 21:32
Well currently he can't actually deliver on the promises he made (which Nats highlighted anyway). So as above, let's watch him weasel out of them.
However, it would seem that the north had had enough, felt things weren't getting done, so pushed for a change. Fair enough to them and how democracy works. I haven't seen how that changes the mix of parliament (other than being the obvious seat down on the right).
On a personal level I detest Winston, pretty much everything bad about politicians, stirs up shit periodically on well flogged horses just to get some screen time etc and lying most of the time to round out the package.

If nothing else, everybody who voted or watched TV tonight knows who is MP for Northland.
I have zero expectations but high hopes for entertainment.
Our MP, Winston, loves being on the telly and Northland has the best rabble rousers. Great combo.

Does this just make the Maori Party, ACT and United Future a little more important to National?

The one thing I like about Winnie is that he pisses the rest of the MP's off. I notice that Key has flown to Auss (us paying?) to watch the cricket rather than support his national workers at the election hq.

Not sure if your applying that to Winnie or the By election. I really feel for Willow Jean Prime, in my mind the best MP for us with her feet in the community.
But, no. Compromise.
Pre election Key said if you don't vote for us Northland gets nothing, Osborne has said similar since. Bullying, arrogant, pricks much?
Oh, the bridge carrot has been part of the Regional development plan for years, re-inventing it for an election is typical Nat smoke & mirrors. They lost because they don't give a toss about this region.

Best of a not particularly good lot, imho.
Winnie may well be a spanner in the works, but at least he is there. If in any doubt, think what would have happened (continue to happen) had National held the seat.
Labour will have spoken with Winnie - hence the unspoken(?) support for him. Feel a bit sorry for their candidate, but she'll be remembered in the party and could well get something later.
The object of the exercise was to get National out of the seat. That's worked. What happens next will be interesting.

out of curiosity, what is not good for northland? that winston won instead of the hostage called Osborne? Or that Mike Sabin had to resign for 'personal reasons'? Or that National run Mike Sabin despite knowning that he had 'personal issues' costing us a by election less then 5 month after the general election? or that Winston won after National held the seat for 50 odd years, and now the sky will come falling down on the Northlanders cause National was so good to them in the last 50 years, all those double laned bridges, good jobs, rock star economy, affordable houses ,and their good on business large and small nous?
Really, what is not good for Northland?

there are few 'crimes for assault' that warrant this kind of name suppression. Especially considering that National changed the law in regards to name suppression around 2010 and actually made it harder to get name suppression. So in order for anyone to get suppression not only of the names of the victims, but also the perpetrator and the court the deed needs to be a bit more than just 'assaulting' someone one.
http://www.beehive.govt.nz/release/government-makes-name-suppression-harder-get
nder the proposals, the court will only be able to make an order prohibiting the publication of a defendant's name, address, occupation, or other details likely to lead to their identification, on the following grounds:
Where there is a real risk of prejudice to a fair trial.
To prevent undue hardship to the victims.
Where publication would identify another person whose name is suppressed by order or by law (e.g. a victim).
Where publication would endanger the safety of any person.
Where publication would cast suspicion on other people that may result in undue hardship.
To prevent extreme hardship to the accused and/or people connected to the accused.
Where publication would be likely to prejudice the interests of the maintenance of law, including the retention, investigation, and detection of offences.
Mr Power said the legislation would make it clear there is no presumption of extreme hardship solely on the grounds that an alleged offender is well known.
"Being famous is not a good enough reason to be granted name suppression.
there is then the 'prominent New Zealander' that had name suppression til end of Feb 2015, wich then was extended till end of March 2015 to be again extended in an emergency hearing until April 20th, 2015 - which is the date of the courtcase.
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11394223 - Jan 30th
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11404727 - Feb 19th
http://www.nbr.co.nz/article/prominent-new-zealander-name-suppression-extended-vy-170285 - March 19th
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11424208 - March 27th - appeal to lift name suppression granted again.
so there is a prominent new zealander, facing charges for 12 instances of indecent behaviour, who is on name suppression.
But for all we know this got nothing to do with Mike Sabin and his personal issues, this is just the story of a prominent New Zealander who had to indecently to assault someone cause obviosly now one gave it up for free to that prominent New Zealander.

LOL. We shall see. The Nats work off a wonky ledger so if they say we can't afford it & flourish some cherry picked statistics their numerate voters will accept the decision. Just like an uber conference centre and greater gambling opportunities. How useful.
Currently the biggest catalyst up here would be an international airport. We have 2 existing runways big enough (cheers US) and some very wealthy corporations and individuals hankering after it. The knock on effect has a very positive impact on most of our regional issues, roading, employment, business, real estate, etc. I would happily see the growth of overseas owned developments up here if it created such a game changer. Less risky than a bunch of oil wells that's forshore. Not that I'm totally against extraction. Just sayin.

Not sure about international airports with 24 hour landing rights. But NZ could profit with smaller airports to link the provinces to the larger cities.
I do believe that WJP will have a good future, she is smart, articulate and a Northlander. As for Winston, he is seventy now, ....not matter what when he bites the dust, JWP is still young.
I actually believe that Winston will be good.....I don't think he has a shred of use for the current lot of Nationalistas nor has he any need for them. Winston is no Peter Dunne.

National MP
Head of the Law and order Committee - appointed by Dear Leader - cause nothing shows more class than overseing the Police that is handling the investigation into ones wrong doings. (for this alone should dear leader have been pelted with rotten eggs n tomatoes)
as per his Wikipedia
"In 2006, he founded MethCon Group, a company that supplies drug education. He sold the company in October 2010.[1] He also played a role in the establishment of drug courts in New Zealand by inviting American judge Peggy Hora to talk about how drug courts operate in the United States.[5]
In 2008, Sabin received a Sir Peter Blake Emerging Leader Award"
also he is the Father of Brooke Sabin - national mouthpiece on TV.

Bree? Didn't she take up with some TV show or summat?
I think Winnie is the appropriate winner. He'll make some sort of difference - apparently he's already taken a pop at John Key about the railways. I suspect JK will be in for a very rough ride going forward, which has to be a good thing. JK has directed snide and belittling comments at a lot of people and been able to walk away when it got too hot - it could be his turn to be on the receiving end, and he'll have nowhere to hide.

Over 65's make up (he googles) well over 12% of the population. So if you take into account that they nearly always actually vote they are a critical voting block.
So a candidate also being over 65 might be considered appealing to them in a MP.

The other side of that coin is when they do give a toss about your region - that's when they replace a duly elected Regional Council with "commissioners" and proceed to drown said region in cows...and get the region to clean up the mess afterwards.
