This makes me a little wary

A roadster/naked bike doesn't need huge horsepower, but it does need torque. In the real world 130 to 140kph cruise is about the maximum sustainable with no wind protection. (I'm talking about a trip, not a ride around the block.) It helps if the engine is well into usable torque at that speed. Some journalists then tend to complain that the bike has been "emasculated". If, however, somebody does give the journalists what they want, the same journalists will complain that the engine is too peaky, so fuck the journalists.
When the Hornet 919 came out it had a "detiuned" Fireblade engine from a few generations previously and it worked just fine.
The price should be reasonable because they'll have save a lot of tooling costs by using an existing engine. If that frame is from an earlier bike too they'll have saved a whole lot more. It could be a seriously good buy but it might be advisable to factor in a suspension upgrade.
Then again, the only Suzuki I have ever owned was my SJ50. :scooter:

Mac McDonald in Tauranga modified the egregious back seat on my Z1000 to make it more amenable for a pillion over moderate distances. I am certain he could do the same thing to this new Suzuki.

Actually there are fewer and fewer pillion friendly bikes. The aim being to get the lady onto her own bike.... Just saying that its never going to be on our shopping list... This thread isn't about a thousand other bikes its about this one... Or do you have an issue with people expressing opinions?

That engine is widely considered the pick of the noughties litre bikes.
When I first read about the GSX-S I thought it looked pretty bland compared to the obvious big nakeds. At 140hp it's not remotely close to competing for top dog and it looks like a GSR.
But when it's phrased as "a naked K5 thou with wide bars and (hopefully) more low-mid range" then it suddenly seems a whole lot more interesting. Especially when I remember that I can't afford a Super Duke 1290, which is largely the reason I don't have one.
With a bit of luck it'll become the new Hornet 919. Only faster.

I had a wee sit on a Z100 SX the other day and one thing I noticed was that my knees immediately hurt. I see that article in question raises the same issue with the Suzuki, and indeed the same outfit criticized the Z1000 for the same thing.
So, as a big bloke how do you find it? I mean obviously if it were a problem you wouldn't be on it, but the leg room was definitely a factor for me in buying the 1290.

I would argue that the MT09 is a $14000 bike that costs $20000 in order to make it the bike it should have been. No doubt the Suzuki will have some cost cutting too, but I am hoping they havent gone too far-like the GSR750 for example.

True, but "should have been" isn't the same as "needs to be".
For me, I'm sure the stock MT-09 would be fine. For others, maybe not.

I'll agree with that. It may not have all the tasty shit I'd expect it to have, but it is no doubt a fuckin' grouse machine.
But then again, I'm the retard building a no-torque screamer naked 600 with tasty bits. And then a 600 with no power at all and a bit of torque and not a single tasty suspension/brake/chassis component

No price yet, but up on Suzuki NZ site:
http://www.suzuki.co.nz/Motorcycle/Sport/GSX-S1000A/
http://www.suzuki.co.nz/Motorcycle/Sport/GSX-S1000FA/
The 2016 GSX-S1000A is powered by a street-tuned version of the four-stroke, liquid-cooled, DOHC, 999 cc, inline-four engine that became a legend in the 2005–2008 GSX-R1000. The newly honed engine delivers smooth throttle response and immediate, controlled acceleration, so the sport rider experiences adrenaline-rushing performance.

GSX-S1000A
$16,995 + ORC ( = in between GSX-R750 and GSX-R600)
... I'd have put Bandit price there too, for comparison, but it's fallen off their site.
(Edit: for the record, if my current bike wasn't worth a buck-fifty as a trade-in, it'd be the MT-09 for $13,999 I'd be looking at. But yeah, that GSX-S1000A seems a nice option ...)

Browsing thru Brit bike mags and initial thoughts have it as 10 years to late and snatchy low end fueling...hamfisted track-oriented technopoofs to a man would describe most brit journos.
But not surprising when the majority of them worship Triumphs speed triples...which the S will eat alive torque-wise in comparative tests on real roads.
It's price is not perfect (should be cheaper)but is a hell of a lot of bike still.
I like it and am tempted...but might just wait for the 2016 GSX-R750???

Spotted a couple of these at the top of the Futa Pass between Bologna and Florence a month or so ago. Both tricked up with Renthal bars and after-market levers and mirrors. The blue looks very nice, which was a surprise as I was underwhelmed by that colour in online images.
The Futa was great fun on an FJR two-up with luggage. It would be the absolute shizz on one of these Suzukis, or even a Z1000, for that matter.

Also, interesting point - if I posted up on KB I was paying that amount for a 10 year old engine you hos would slag me off something awful. BUT the exercise is valid by Suzuki - price it well, design well and it should sell.
