View Full Version : How do I get into bucket racing?

I'm 15 and really want to start racing bikes (not competitively, just for some fun) but I have no idea how to start. I will be on a pretty tight budget and don't have a trailer so I can't take something like an fxr. I've been looking around on trademe, and have noticed bikes like this one

I could use bikes like these because they could fit in the back of my parent's car. Would they be legal? Also, how do I get a licence and does anyone know anybody in particular I can talk to to get more information? Thanks in advance for answering.

Posting in the Bucket Racing section of this very forum might be a start

If a nice moderator is around they might want to move this over there.

Forza is a bad idea. Here is an old thread in the buckets about the eligibility of the Forza. Read it before buying one then don't buy one.

Save up and buy a trailer or beg someone to transport your bike to and from the track. Beer is the usual currency for such favors.

You should get an FXR ready to race for around that price.
It's far better and is even legal to race.
First step is to rock up on a club day and say hello, there are often bikes for sale that don't hit trademe.
Last time I was up there 2 FXR's were for sale, I think one was the same price and the other cheaper.

After asking here already...
If you don't like the answer keep asking?

Thanks for all the answers, and sorry for posting the same question twice, I don't even know why I made that one. As for the fxr idea, I've just done some measurements and an fxr might just fit in the back of the car (at a squeeze) only problem would be getting it in. Do you have any idea what a bike like this would sell for? There don't seem to be many bucket racers on trademe right now.

Con your parents in to fitting a towbar if they don't already have one.
Then you can beg/borrow/hire a garden trailer, problem solved.

I'd say come down and have a look. If you are sorted for gear you can usually bludge a ride on a sturdy.
There is a club bike you can book for a meeting if you want to have a go.

I know that an FXR does fit in a Honda Odyssey

You can always hire a bike trailer. They're crazy light and be towed with almost any vehicle. A guy tows his bikes with a Toyota Vitz in Auckland. Now there's a gutless car!
Edit: Just saw Koba-hydrates post. FUCK you're a smart bastard!

Yeah, I'm planning on going to the next meet before I buy a bike, but unfortunately I don't have any gear. It's great news that an fxr fits into a honda oddysey, because that's pretty similar to my family's car. My Dad seems pretty keen on bucket racing so maybe we could get a towbar and trailer. There's an fxr on trademe for $1500 right now which I really like the look of. Also, a bit off topic, but does anyone know if you can use a bucket on track days (like at pukekohe and tracks like that) it looks great fun as well.

Total bargain. Mind you at 15 years old I never had $2000...(or $5 for that matter)
