Hey guys, there are a few AVI and MPEG clips on my laptop (Incl Ghostrider and Crusty Demons) that I would like to convert to DVD and burn off.
I know this is possible but could anyone tell me what program I can use? Im not keen on Nero and AVI/MPEG/DivX converter is not in my good books so are there any other programs?
Cheers

Have just bought a digital video camera. When I download movies to the PC they are very large because in MPEG1 format.
No problem making DVD's in MPEG1, I use Nero Express, the only problem is that I can't fit much.
So I've tried converting my movies into MPEG2 using Nero Express, but even the smallest compression ratio is bad quality. So I'm looking to for a good (possibily free) codec. Thanks!

I know you said you weren't keen on Nero, but the latest version has Nerovision Express which does a good job of converting divx etc. It also gives you the ability to add menus etc.
Alternatively for plain divx-dvd try DivxToDVD from http://www.vso-software.fr/ Works well but doesn't offer any menus.....

Well from the look of things, I might need to re-install Nero. The only reason I don't like it is because it conflicts with my other writing software.

Yeah, Nero is a pain in the donkey (Hitcher - beat you to it . . .) like that - it always seems to have probs if you have any other CDR software installed. And I found it didnt handle too many different formats, but that may be because I tend to just use VLC player rather than a codec pack.
Also check out WinAVI (http://www.winavi.com) - have used the demo which seems to work well, but has a nag message in the middle of the screen, need to find a full version to get rid of that.

I use WinAVI. COnverts lots-a-stuff to DVD (and other formats). You will need a DVD burning program that can do DVD-video. I use Nero, but most will do it.
For better quality, I use TMPG 3 or TMPG DVD source with VBR (Variable bit rate) 2 pass encoding, and TMPG DVD author to set up the DVD format and the built in DVD writing software to burn.
VBR gives better results as it adjusts the bit rate to suit the frame, rather than having a constant, average level. OTOH, it is a lot slower - it is an overnight exercise to convert.
Look at www.videohelp.com or my mate Sefy's guide at http://www.labdv.com/sefy-guide/help3.html

I've used Videostudio to edit video, and burn to DVD. Very easy to use, and you can download a trial copy from ulead.com. Use a Mac now... much better!!!

Still having trouble as every trail program puts a watermark on the outcome.

AVIDemux (http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/) is the weapon of choice around our traps at the moment. Will handle all formats in and out, has plenty of stock filters (resize, resample etc) and the latest version has a fantastic Perl scripting language for doing batch converts.
