Hi all, went for a great ride today around Whitford to Maraetai through Clevedon etc. On the motorway home, I noticed a faint but consistent knocking when I accelerated. It seems more noticeable at these higher revs. It is a 96' Honda Hornet 250. The knock is not loud, seems to be consistent tempo and sounds like it echoes a bit. I can't really feel it through the bike just hear it.
Is it safe/smart to go for another long ride this weekend? Looking forward to a group ride on Monday...
I have booked the bike in to a mechanic next Thursday, it's my daily driver but only a short trip to work, 50kms. Had a full service from George at Motorcycle Doctors only about 1000kms ago, otherwise is running great. Cheers!

It all depends, if it's rod knock/run bottom end bearings it may not last long at all. Hard to say without hearing it though.

you got slappers? or knockers?
the first step to overcoming a problem... is finding out what the fuck it is.
a little old horny...
she's been buggered, fucked, flipped and done again.
but, being a homoda, you fix it, and you get to do all that for the next decade.

Drill a few holes in the exhaust so you can't hear the knock.
But ... keep on riding it.
What's the worst that can happen ... ???

Please excuse my ignorance, but what are knockers/slappers? Have heard of tank slapping before but generally in reference to issues with front forks causing the handlebars to 'slap the tank'. Cheers

How about you let the other riders know your bike is about to shit itself and sit at the back so when it does you dont hurt other people.

Good Advice this! It may not., but if it did it'll leave a puddle and any poor sod hitting that will instantly go tits up.

If late at night when your tucked up in the pit you still hear it then yes its safe to ride.

Depends what and where the problem actually is ... Between a faint knock to a profound knock ... may take a while.
To the OP ... if it gets noticeably louder on your ride ... go home. Directly home. And be gentle with the engine as you do so.
Regular checks on the oil level to ... keep it full.

Fuck you guys are useless pricks at the best of times
First things first,
Are you running it on 91?
Is your engine full of sexy oil?
Is your chain lubed?
Have you googled how to check your steering head bearings?
Have you checked the plugs?
Have you got some spanners out and had a quick check to see if everything is tight?
Are your balls slapping the tank from excitement/frequent subconcious masturbation

You're right, this section is troll central.
In short there's no way we can know from your description. As a quick hunch put it on a stand and spin the wheel observing how smooth the chain is. And if it goes tight in any section.
Keep fingers well away or the chain will messily remove them from your hands.

how many kms and when was the chain / sprockets last checked / changed?
if its a knocking/ clunking noise on acceleration , my bet is its the chain/sprockets as i just replaced mine , got mine for $200 delivered from uk in less than a week

Hey guys, girls (?) and trolls. Definitely let my mates know that bike was having issues. Called and spoke with my mechanic before I headed out, checked most of the things I could and we are pretty sure it's the chain or sprockets. Didn't get any worse today, so I'm sure it will be sorted on Thurs when I it's booked in. On a side note, had a great ride down Pohutukawa Highway through to Okere Point, shit those windies scared me, mossy, wet, and not signposted. Good to get outside the comfort zone, though. #happyendings

*Orere Point.
The block's in excellent condition still. The moss hasn't grown fully yet and most of the rutting on corners has been patched over. Ride it again in a couple of months and you might need a change of undies :msn-wink:
