Hey guys, I've recently purchased an old SJ50qt, the thing is that it's got problems charging.

The battery it came with was shot, so I replaced it. After googling I looked at the possibility it could be the voltage regulator (so I got a working second hand one), swapping it out didn't appear to correct it.

I checked for grounding of the stator (from the regulator plug) found red to be the battery, red/white and yellow go down into the engine (stator?) the Black/white is ground. These all have continuity.

The bike runs, just doesn't charge the battery.

The stator puts out (at the rear of the scooter) max 40v AC

Any ideas?

check out thread http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/126874-Suzuki-SJ50qt-electrics-Help-please!-(Ignition-barrel) as this has wiring diagrams in it which will make it easier to work out what to test. there will be two feeds from the stator to the reg/rec unit (see wiring diagram) these should both put out 40 + volts ac at about 1/2 maximum engine revs. test the earth wire connection to the battery buy running a temporary connection and then test for charge voltage as I have seen plenty of these go high resistance in side the loom but will show a good test with a multimeter as it is working with a low current and will not show up the fault. The reg/rec units also fail on these the only way to test is to swap in a known good unit and test for good charge voltage.
