Hiya.

Returning rider after many a year. Sold the last bike to pay school fees and feed the animals about ten years ago. Rode for about 18 years continuously, including a 3 year stint courier in AK in the early-mid nineties.

Just bought a '92 gsx600f, needs a little TLC and new tyres (due in couple of days). Its red so it must go faster right?

Some things are very different, some things seem to be very much the same. Back into it cautiously (doing ongoing retraining) now after being widowed.

Anybody hereabouts used to hang in Darby street in the early-mid Eighties?

Am into long rides on the beach, and curling up with a good workshop manual...........:nya:

cheers

Will be bugger all snow in the forest I think, too much rain in the last couple of days. But the guys I was going with are not fans of wet and cold, and are scared of tree roots. Will take the camera though if I get out, for sure.:Punk::Punk:

Sorry for hijacking your thread, as you were.

The roads hereabouts are good generally...........I have driven them heaps in the cage over the years. ParaParas about a dozen times a year over the last 18 years, so very familiar. Planning on the "forgotten world" highway at some point. Perhaps round Mt Taranaki.

I got a couple things to get sussed first on the bike, tyres, suspension settings are all out of whack (musta been a fat dude), typical gsx rough idle (could be old fuel, or fuel from Gull in the tank). Starts fine cold, when warm idle dies away slowly, sometimes cuts out when you come to a stop if you don't blip the throttle. Could be a simple idle adjustment, carbie balance, or shit in the bowls, could be a carbie strip and clean, could need a petrol tap petcock rebuild/ vacuum leak, who knows. That is what I bought it for though,........a hobby.

Then to top that off I have to rebuild confidence.

Welcome back to biking. Not a bad bike to start back with. Yeah give them carbs the once over, can't hurt. Have fun.

Now the Wanganui River road has been sealed all the way that makes a nice run and then up to Raetihi, someone else down your way mentioned Fields Track - that's on my bucket list, and one Jatz did, though not on a sport bike!, is the Turakina Valley Road - also on the bucket list...

Plus that famous route - 'follow the nose'

Two things today:

Downloaded bestbikeroads app. This has definite potential.

Downloaded Haynes manual.

"Happiness is" getting hold of a hard to find Haynes manual for a really old model :-)

"Happiness is" new rubber front and back, and rough idle problems going away after a bit of twiddling and a good long ride.

Adjusted levers and pedals to suit my size and riding position so no more wrist aches. Remembered to ride with the body not a death grip on the handles and it all came flooding back............

After all that rain I finally took the day to scrub in the new tyres.

Not wanting to go too far in any direction while not entirely sure of the bike, I sort of did a star pattern on all the roads leading out of town.

Headed out to Bulls, came back thru Fordell, headed out SH4 to the top of the hills, came back, headed out towards Waitotara and back.

All up 216km.

Finally went in search of every dirty nasty bit of roading in town to familiarise myself with the bike. Every intersection/roundabout/lights/carpark exit/ steep hill and rail crossing in town got hit.

Now I am a bit more confident in the bike's handling and charateristics, and the tyres are scrubbed in. The mech fitting the tyres, while doing a good job, overtightened the drivechain a tad so fixed that once home.

All up a great day in the sun to be pootling about.........hope you all had the same. :-)

Great you enjoyed yourself today.

Next time you're in Bulls, try the little cafe on SH3 heading to Wanganui - it's on the left almost opposite the FourSquare... yummy ginger crunch...

You're right, was a great day to be out and about on a bike...

Unless it was a really wet forest with some very slippery tree roots. Damn I'm sore today.

More mechanical twiddling today.......

Last weekend I took a ride up to Morrinsville from Wangas, via paraparas, Nat Park thru to Turangi, Taupo to Tirau then Matamata to Morrinsville. Good fast roads and as I took an early start there was little traffic until past Tokoroa when all the assholes woke up.

Saw about 100 bikes of all sorts out enjoying the day.

On the way back it pissed down the whole way and it was a challenge to get home. Wind through National Park section was severe, and the new waterproofs proved anything but.....and I only saw ONE bike the whole way home, and he looked very very uncomfortable in his racing leathers and black bag attire.

I digress,.......last weekend was a shakedown ride to see just how the bike was performing all loaded up. It failed in some respects, running really lean, head bearings worked loose during the trip, front fork preload insufficient. So today I fixed it all.

Bike was running lean because when I pulled the tank, airbox to access the carb bank readying it for a carb sync, the airbox wasn't actually connected to the bank of carbs at all. Just the "rubber boots" being squished up against them somewhat.

Anyway long expletive laden day short, fixed all that, balanced carbs, remounted airbox correctly, now its purring like a kitten.

Its a bitch to work on with full enclosed fairings so I understand why last owner/owners took shortcuts. At least its back close to where it should be for road riding.

One more modification I did was wire a relay direct from the battery to the coils, bypassing the stock wiring loom apart from the switches, providing full juice at startup and almost no choke required now.

At some point in future the A/F pilot screws are going to be reset, but will wait until its ultrasonic cleaning time for that. They just cannot be reached on this model without removing the carbie bank entirely.

Road test today.

Pulls through the entire rev range like a 15 yr old school boy.

Steering head better. Still some and vagueness on the straight and level. Torqued the swingarm to see if its just that, and it was real easy to undo so we shall see If I gotta pull and replace the bearings. Ever so slight side to side hint of movement when I pull on it compared to a discernible movement before.

I think I overdid the preload/ride height on the forks so backed it off a little but yet to road test it again.

Getting the handling sorted is now the priority as its running like a dream mechanically. Big difference and not even changed a spark plug yet........

The joys of a 20 yr old plus project bike............

So its been a while, and the old girl has been nipped up along the way. Just fitted 2nd set of new tyres last week but alas am on holiday without her due to having to shift some stuff around requiring the van.

It has been a great project to begin with and has definitely been rewarding.

BUT Bandit time! Just decided and shook hands on a Bandit 1200 S with full luggage. This is where I want to be in the spectrum of Biking. Open roads and long distance tours.

If I ever fall into the go pro/vlog trap just shoot me.
