The law you'd potentially fall foul of, is impersonating a police officer. Mostly it's about intent, ie, did you do whatever you're doing, to make others believe you're a police officer. In the case of the vest, why would you choose that vest over another?
Not something I think is very common, but then I wouldn't want to be a test case either.

In all seriousnessnessness years ago there was that gerkin company that painted/labelled one of their rep's cars to look similar to a police car. Think it was a commodore from memory??
Either way, it Copped heaps of attention but at the end of the day was deemed legal. The police said they shouldna donut cos it was in bad taste.............................what they expect, they were gerkins ffs.
Can't see an issue with a flouro wrapper causing an issue, after all the thin blue line is far too busy busting speedsters at the end of overtaking lanes errrr I meant black spot areas

I have seen them being used by horse riders in the UK and I get it. You see them sooner and when you see the word 'Polite' you might even slow down further. Clearly it is meant to look like the word 'Police' whatever anyone says. Horses get spooked so you need to slow down, although too many twats on two and four wheels don't so I understand their use in this situation. Having never seen mounted Police in NZ I am not sure how well it would work here, should soon find out though as one has been ordered for my daughter.
For motorbikes however I cannot see the point unless you do actually want to be a pretend cop. By the time someone is close enough to read the words they have already seen the yellow jacket. I doubt there are any legal issues with wearing it, but I cannot see what it will achieve that a normal hi-viz wouldn't.

Without the 'Polite' word it'd be fine. Adding that just makes it cop bait really. If the cop concerned already has a dislike for motorcyclists this would run the risk of turning that into a seething hatred.

They could of course be actual Police jackets that were made in New Zealand.

Many years ago when the Traffic Dept had motorbike cops, there was a local bike rider with a handlebar mounted windshield. He had 'TERRIFIC' written across the base. Wore a black jacket and a white helmet. I believe the authorities soon sorted him out.

Read the article, says they were first worn by road cyclists.... that says it all and is the issue for me, being mistaken for one of them not being mistaken for a cop!
All your going to do by wearing that is antagnoise the haters anymore once they are close enough to realise your not a real cop. They then have a real short time frame to think and do something stupid before contemplating the consequences. Wear one hell no....
Better off wearing one of the Mil Spec flouro vests from the American websites, visible and with armour inserts.

How many tickets do you need to issue in that time to hit your "quota" before you leave?

Here in Victoria (Aus), at least, it is mandatory to wear an approved hi vizzzz vest on your learners. Min 3mths. We sell them & customers look ever so lovely in them.... :tugger:

The problem is, all of the cages would be calling up *555 saying "waaah waaaah I saw a cop doing 110kph waaah waaaaah lanesplitting waaaah waaaah" and you'd end up with unwarranted attention.

Great idea! More use for cyclist and horses than KBers but great idea. You might get a cop with an attitude try his luck, no way it would stand in court though so doubt said cop would charge you.

Not a pretty thought ... ...
But ...
Seeing what you are wearing ... will not be as bad as seeing you take it off ...
I'm sure at least one representative of the forces of Lorrenorder would take exception to this type of jacket. Personally, I wouldn't pick this fight. But as always, YMMV.

The NZ road code actually promotes high viz vests to be worn here, I would consider wearing one in the fog or if I do alot of night rides.

These are very functional and easily seen. I gots one for US rides.

wondering how long before we see people with orange strobe lights :corn:
and yes I use a hi vis vest, find it most effective when its undone, flapping about attracts attention
but difficult to spot by oncoming cars

A contractor I used to work with had one on a stem.
Bit more than I would do but it gave her the confidence she needed to be a full time rider.

I'm all for doing what you think makes you more comfortable on your ride - whatever floats your boat.
I also know that with all the road signs, hi vis jackets every one is going to eventually become more blaze and ignore most things.
My own idea is to make myself more visible by having motion and flashing  as my weapons of choice. Being different is my goal

Flashing can be very cold this time of year. [emoji12]
My mother in law had a vest that flashed.
USB rechargeable.
Solid worked well during the night but difficult to see during the day.
Flashing worked well during the day but very distracting at night and it seemed to attract oncoming traffic, encourage following traffic to tailgate etc.
I have always found being one of the f things people instinctively see is far more effective.
Fear it, fuck it, feed on it or it's funny.
I don't really want drivers following me around looking to hump me or eat me so the choices are a little easier.
Someone else I used to work with swore by wearing a clown wig on his helmet.

the funniest thing I ever saw, remember MadMax Thunderdome? A biker in Malaysia used to ride around with a (female) manikin's head epoxy'd to the top of his helmet. He swore that everybody saw him, because they looked at least twice :-) I think he was right.
