Since I have my Full licence, I am taking the oppertunity to get my leg over as many bikes as I can to determine what I want to get as my full power bike.

Currently I have taken out:

GSX-R750 (was nice, but I am too fat and unfit for the riding position)
VStrom 1000 (was super comfy to ride, but not what I am after)
GSX1250FA (my pick of the bunch, like my current bike, but with more POWAH!)
GSX1300R (was super nice, although riding position was a little uncomfy)

My criteria is:

Fully Faired
1000cc+
preferably inline 4 (not a fan of V-Twins TBH)
Comfy riding position
Sport Tourer

So - based on the 2 leading bikes (the 1250FA and the 'Busa) what would you recommend I take out for a test ride

Thought i might get one of these.
They apparantely quite docile to ride if you want to.
But 180 hp on tap if you want it, must be a blast.

Except it's not an IL4. And it's not faired.

K4 gsxr 1000 was an awesome touring bike for me. chuck in on your list just for the hell of it. roomy bike, comfy position, not as aggressive as the latest stuff, strong engine, lots of grunt everywhere

Thats on my list to take for a Joy Ride.

As for budget - I am looking around 8-12 K, depending on the bike

There are some that I am looking to take for a ride that have been suggested (Zx14, Speed Triple)

for that money you could get a very fresh 1250FA, maybe even an already registered new one or as nearly new as you can get, it will tick all your boxes and be familiar, maybe that's not what you want though?

what about the Triumph Trophy or for that money there are bound to be some K1200 examples kicking about?

Yep. Baron Von Grumble (one of the vloggers) commutes on a K5 thou, he took it around Europe, he even took it green-laning.

7 year old zx14 for 12k isn't as good value as a 2 year old for 17k.
Drop in the new price has effected the near new ones value but people with older ones(pre 1441 engine) are still asking the same prices. The version 2 1441 is a better bike.

1250FA will be the best for most things. Light enough, powerful enough and comfortable. Also very easy to find another 20 to 30hp once you get used to its power. Lots of aftermarket parts for them.

With parts availability I would never own a Triumph.

Test ride as much as you can. Make them long ones so you get an idea of comfort.

So that makes a Busa what?

Yeah , Im too hold to bent like a staple for hours of riding, even though the Busa is a great Bike.
I will leave Busa,s to the young guys

Quite right - I am testing the ride, and the tests bring me Joy

should probably also add - although I like Sport Tourers, I am staying away from Hardcore tourers - I commute on the bike and pretty much lane split all the way to work so the bigger tourers (as opposed to the sport tourers) look like they would be a bit harder to split on.

Atm the 1250FA is top of my list, but I am a single rider, not commited to any one bike, so figure I will make the most of it and get my leg over as many rides as I can  Purely for market research of course....

The new owner asked if I wanted to buy it back when I started looking for a replacement earlier this year, I don't think it gets/had a lot of use since I sold it.

Might I recommend a bicycle. Ride it for a year, and the Gixxer will fit you better.

Nah, Big CC Sport Tourers are looking more like an option

Just a thought...

Tourers and panniers can be problematic when commuting, however don't some have removable panniers so then the bike would be no wider than normal - also, big tourers are often shaft drive, so no messy chain...

You could do worse than a GS1150 BMW, or even a 1150RT. Panniers. top box. Plenty of reliable torque. I'd recommend the 1200 of each, but maybe they're not in your price range.

And considering you talked up a Busa, maybe you're not looking for a mature riders bike.

 Perhaps you need to spend time on vorb.

Here, we simply recommend a bigger engine/motorcycle/whatever... not less

Well thats the thing - I'm relatively young so maybe want to enjoy the time when I convince myself that I need a 200+ hp death machine to commute on... but at the same time, the 50+ Km I commute means that I want to be able to work when I get there

Decisions, Decisions.

I will say that Shaft Drive is slightly appealing (the whole low maintenance part)
