View Full Version : whats the cheapest cheapest sports bike?

i was wondering how much a 400cc+ sportsbike would cost?, it would need a sound motor but cosmetic wise i dont care (to an extent)
or would it be easier to buy one from the wreakers that has a good motor but the farings and stuff are screwed?
the reason is because, first i need a new bike (right now on a crm 250, yes the enduro). secondly i think it would be fun fixing up the farings (with putty and sanding them) and make as many mods to the bike without feeling guilt by wreaking unsratched farings.
any help?
(hopefully this will be a reality after i find some money)

Late 80s / early 90s FZR400 I reckon. My dad picked up a good(ish) '87 one for $2300 a while back. Fairings not so good but the motor is sound. For some reason they're not that popular...
My advice on them though, get one with the EXUP valve working (heaps of people take them off because they think it's a restrictor) and put a dynojet kit in it. Makes them go like a cut cat. It's no match for the '9R but I'd go so far as to say I actually prefer the fizzer for commuting and blatting about town.

what do you think the top speed for a 400 (older ones) is?
madboy
20th September 2005, 19:35
My first bike was a 90 FZR400 with 24k on the clock... bought it off someone I knew who done 12k in 5 years (and two batteries strangely enough). $3k. I kept it for a year and flicked it for $2k on KB simply because that was the trade I'd get on it and I figured someone else might as well get a good deal... admittedly at that price I had three people lined up to buy it within a day of listing in case the original deal fell through.
It had some minor cosmetic damage, like the odd scratch, but it had never properly been down the road, only a driveway.
Great bike, not exactly a rocket in a straight line compared to the 636, but ya get what ya pay for.

Fast enough for you to either lose your licence or kill yourself...
Seriously though - a 400 could easily give a bigger bike some grief through some windy roads.
It's not about top speed - its how fast the average speed is mate.

what do you think the top speed for a 400 (older ones) is?my FZR was governed at 195-ish indicated, which was 12,000rpm (14 redline). Ironically I sold it cos the top end was not quite enough to "keep" my license if you know what I mean.

$400 for not being on a 250 or less, $400 for not having an L plate, and possibly another $400 for being over 70.... then if you ride at night (after 10) theres another $400.
Of course if you are speeding and get done then its anybodies guess. But yeh look to spend about $800-$1200 extra atleast... whats wrong with a ZXR/CBR 250? Not too much slower and good to get onto the road with.

How long have you held your restricted??
If you are under 25 and have held your restricted for more than 9 months you can apply for a full license after sitting the CBTA.

IMHO 400cc multis represent the best value for money on sports bikes out there. The following are the ones I have in mind when I say this (in alphabetical order)
Honda VFR400
Honda CBR400
Kawasaki ZXR400
Suzuki GSXR400
Yamaha FZR400
All of them have roughly 55-60hp and are capable of 200kmph+. I've owned the yamaha and the kawasaki myself - the kawa is sharper and racier, but the yam is more road-friendly and smoother and much easier to turn.
Personally, I wouldn't (and haven't) spend more than $2500 on a 400cc sports bike. If you're buying from a dealer expect to pay around $4000 for an early 90s machine. Try and get one with 35,000kms or less.
PS: If you don't mind sourcing an engine, then MotoRacer might have a deal for you on a 1989 Honda CBR400RR.. :msn-wink:

As for the 400 top speed........mine starts to get boring around the 220-230 mark (where the F is 7th!!!!! :ar15: ).
But most 250's these days do a good 200 any how :weird: Hell my RG did 200 (about 230 on the speedo - they are fing inaccurate though).
For me the best bang for ya buck was the RG150ESRR???WTF???....but they dont make them anymore. And i got the speeding tickets and the wrecked riding gear to prove it. Why own a Hyabusa? when you can have a KILLER QUAIL!!!

Im curious to know why everyone who is on their restricted with still a while to go wants to get a larger bike "just for the moment"? And why everyone is wanting to do their "Top Speed". Its people like that that give the other bikers bad names and kill themselves.
Get a bike that suits you and ride it to the conditions. I get a much better kick riding through the twisties than I ever would hitting my goverened speed on my bike.

Mate, just go find yourself an RGV250, bout a 93 ( or banana arm onwards ), then u can still ride on learners / restricted, but should keep up with a 400 if its not an old smoker. they have a lot more boogie than most 4 stroke 250's
I think the fine for having the wrong license is 400$ and they normally impound the bike for 28 days and you have to pay about 350 in storage ??? i know thats for cars

the reason im looking for a 400+ is i know most 250's are over priced now because every learner wants one. right now im not really into top speed, but that could be because my 250 trail bike can do no more than 140 in a straight (2 stroke). with the bike i have now, all i do is high speed cornering because thats all it can do. knowing me, i probalby wont even get to 200 on a 400 because i wouldnt feel the need to, unless it was with some mates (peer presure), and i dont want to be caught doing 2x the speed limit (quite poor).
The reason that im looking to see what bike would be best is because knowing me again nothing will happen until i get my full licence anyway (quite lazy), also my dad (once owned two 916's at the same time) dosnt want me to love road bikes (which i do) because of the dangers (hes been in some really bad road crashes), also he wont let me race on a track either (for now).
another reason ild want a 400 is that there one of the cheapest sportsbikes out there (correct me if im wrong), this would be my bike for a while so i feel a 250 would start to feel slow.
Another reason is ild want one a bit scuffed because ild want to put every pennie i make into it, and fix farings, buy better exhasts etc, with a 250cc there wold be no point, everyone wants stock.

It's funny how people believe their own views on life are the right ones.
I was never stopped riding my 400 on my learners, nor on my restricted, nor on my full. Had a cop rolled up behind me doing 60k in a 50 zone and flicked their lights on, I would have stopped, taken the fines for license infringements and no rego ($200). Only twice was I put in the situation where stopping was an option, however on those two occasions had I stopped the above infringements would have been the least of my worries.
In terms of limits, I ride no where near the limits of the 636. I know that if a cop looks at me sideways at 130 that I'll be on 230 before he's ready to u-turn. On a 400, I'd be scraping 160 at that same time... not necessarily enough of a headstart, and that is the reason why I'd be more likely to be sitting on 160+ in the first place on the 400.
That's me, and that's the way I look at it.

I've only owned a ZZR....... no they don't go past 160 - well maybe if the slope if steep enough, you're going downhill and you want to blow your engine up.....
160ish+ in 6th is pulling around 14k on my bike I think the taco goes to 16K max.(testing at puke of course).

Yes - **IF** you keep the 250 2-stroke in good mechanical condition. However we are talking about similar PEAK HP figures here. The 4-stroke 400s will have a broader spread of power (sporty 2-strokes have quite a powerband - but you should know that with your dirt bikes and all). Personally, I wouldn't mind owning a nice Aprillia RS250 (maybe with a 350 kit) for fast riding and track days. I don't imagine you could just cruise on it though.
As far as keeping up goes - you should see Two Smoker leaving everyone for dead on SH22 on his RG150! My bro MotorRacer is pretty handy on my (40HP) XR600 too. As long as the roads are tight and twisty - light is right (and a wee bit of rider skill too of course)!

A good rider on a 250 stroker...is a very very fast rider!!!
250 strokers are incredible quick bikes...they make good power and have low weight....carry huge corner speed...usually well beyond rider abbilities...
I had a mate with a rgv250 [91] when I had my cbr400rr...straight line he'ld pull away...but my balls were larger in corners than him...other wise it would have done me there too...
They are medium maintanace bikes...pistons and rings every 15-18 thou K's...barrels every 25-30....but the parts are really quite cheap....and easy to do your self!!!
I'ld buy a rgv or a nsr...I owned a KR1-s [kawasaki]and it was a bit dodgy on the edge...it would head shake and genrally behave badly...but it was a lil quick than rgv....and as for yamaha...tzr...err....dunno...every time I've riddin a yamaha the fuckin things been a usless piece of shit...or broken down...for know reason other than shits and giggles

89 onwards RGV's are good, 92 (i think) went to the dual mufflers on one side and the banana swing arm, with USD forks, they look fucken hot, but the early ones look the bizzo as well.
With buying one take someone who knows there shit on RGV's, there are some cheap bargins out there, but there are some real lemons, ones that have not been looked after at all, and a lemon will set you back a shitload of coin.
Curious George, Rodders, Fluffy Cat to name a few all know there shit when it comes to 2 strokes and RGV's, drop em a PM sure they'd help out.
Best of luck mate.

Done. Can't ask questions as it's a sale item not an auction. Emailed the guy asking if he was for real. Also complained to Trademe, pointing out the low value, offer to ship overseas and lose a third of the "take" doing so, new user id, and an msn.com email address whihc usually indicates an inhabitant of the great capitalist continent.
Thanks for that Jimmy. I woke up very, very, grumpy and now some other than the family gets to wear it.

Be wary of NSR's with shagged barrels. It seems spares are not easy to come by and pretty expensive to re-line.

Believe so (Nikasil incidentally - I recently spent ages trying to Google for some info using Nikasol - there's just enough out there under that so that you don't realise it's wrong, but not enough to be useful)

nikasil is there anywhere in new zealand that can do this from what I have heard you have to send you barrels to the states to get it done.

Don't believe so. I think there is somewhere in Aust, but I've heard uncertain reports of them. It's not just a matter of finding someone who claims to be able to do it, but who actually can. And whose work won't quickly die. Even BMW stuffed up plated bores on their small six cylinder car engines, so it's not simple.

A friend of mine has a rotax barrel with a chip in it that he got for free, but has no way of repairing it and what it costs to get a barrel sent to usa and back to get it lined he may as well just buy a new one....

I started on a CBR400 and am now on a FZR400RR (with a 600 top end) The fzr is a great bike my only warning is if you are learning you may want to go with some thing not so crouched in. I belive if ya needed to get off this bike in a hurry it would be harder than most.

how dose someone leave people for dead on SH22 on an rg is he like the best rider ever?
Well, Two Smoker is pretty damn fast (and only been riding for just over a year!). Incidently, he's racing in F3 at the mo'.
Re: the question about the RG150 vs RGV150: yes the RG is the sportier looking one (Full fairings, liquid-cooled, mag wheels).
If you do buy an RGV250 make sure you get someone to have a look at engine internals (e.g. powervalves, rings) - you don't want to have the thing seize on you!

That could be it - not 100% sure but I think so. I was told you have to send them to Oz, and it ain't cheap.

Thats probly it then Its great to have because it helps the barrel from losing HP as a 2stroke heats up it loses HP, quite a lot too on a cast iron barrel when you first kick it over say your getting 20hp when it heats up your looking at around 18 which is quite a lot when your racing, correct me if im wrong please

no, actually when i think about i havnt even rode any sports bike, ive only been on trail/dirt bikes. i love the look of sports bikes and i feel the racing postion would be great for me
If thats the case - dont even get a fast 250 cbr/zxr/fzr etc........everyone i know that has been in your situation and has bought a 'sports bike', has crashed badly.
Buy a road bike that you can sell again for relatively the same money (GN250/RD/RZ etc naked with stuff that wont break off) then in 6 months get a RGV250 or similar.
While it doesnt make much sense now - you'll thank me after you have dropped a slow bike on 3 corners.
Think about it - which trail bike did you learn to ride on? The brand new DRZ400?
