Well I used to ride trail bikes as a kid and as transport just out of school (xl-xr250's) but until last weekend only road bikes for 20 years.
Race a pre89 750 so used to grunt BUT was not prepared for the the fun I had last weekend on my mates crf450x:yes:.
Im thinking it might be fun to drift to the dark side and get into this endure/trail riding lark:yes:.
I have rung a few dealers to get an idea on service intervals and costs but have got so many answers that im confused now:brick::brick:.
Looking at crfx/f,wr and wonder who has them what they think of them and how often they service them and what hours before stripdown and what you replace.
Crf450r are mx race bikes im told with short engine life so not sure how I would go on trail/endure.
crf450x not many around but are more endure im told but last longer than R.
wr im told anything from they are the same motor with short engine life to different engines that are bullet proof and last for long time??????????????? so any opinions gratefully accepted.
Not adverse to a 250 but there fuck all cheaper and haven't had any experience with 2 smokes so advice there wold be good.
Cheers.

I have a KDX200 which will be with me forever. Love it. Joy to ride. Its a 2 smoke.
Ive ridden 250 4 strokes which are easier to ride. Not ridden a 450 but mates have sold them to go back to 250s. This is due to the weight I believe, they are a handful in the tight stuff.
But I guess it depends the tracks you will ride, if they are open a 450 would be hella fun.
No idea on servicing 4 strokes.

Whats involved in servicing a 2 stroke and how often?.
I assume changing pistons and top end is pretty straight forward with a manual?.

Yeah easy. 2 to 3 hours. Not had to do mine yet, KDX are pretty reliable in that regard. You need to keep on top of airfilter cleaning and tranny oil etc. Ive got the bits to do a top end but not needed to yet. Pretty easy stuff.

Had an 07 crf250r for about a year. Had to put a new crank and bearings in it after it shat itself, quite common so I am told.:msn-wink:

Hows the crutching going? Save yourself a few nice clean ones did ya.?:2thumbsup
What type of riding you going to be doing? If you are just going to stick to the farm tracks like the blouse you are, then go for a 450.
But if you can overcome your fear, you could try some rougher tracks, then I would stick to a 250. Otherwise you will end up crying like a girl at the side of the track.:msn-wink:

klx300 DRZ400E or wr250 would be my pick. The wr250 is the same basic engine as the yzf, but smaller ports for a longer spread of power I think. Do some googling.
One year at the MX nationals a guy (Chris Birch?) won races on a WR250 in MX2. so they are no slugs.
I've done a trip ride on a KLX300, it's like a tracktor, demolished every hill in its path.

Yer honestly not really sure exactly what sort of riding i would mostly do.
Actually thinking about getting a xr250/400 for the first year as there cheep-reliable-low maintanence to see how I go before spending money on late model stuff.
The 250's a fuck all cheeper than the 450's and have probably been more thrashed that's why im looking at a 450.
Hows the goats??.:bye:

Well if you get an XR and look after it you will probably sell it for what you pay for it. And give you an idea of what you want long term.

DR are a good bike. I mostly use my old DR 200 for the rougher stuff, it is by no means powerful but can have a heap of fun on the rough tracks. DR350 are a good compromise too.:niceone:

Just get an MX bike, if you are just trail riding and the odd cross country event it will be fine, unless you ride like a young 17 year old MX racer with the throttle pinned everywhere.
There are good second hand 4stroke MX bikes around, a lot cheaper than enduro type bikes, if they are ex race bikes most have been thrashed on the track but still have a good service history. its the trail ridden ones you got to watch.

I have a 2012 injected WR450, using a YZ power tuner you can change the maps (make it a nana bike or a monster on steroids) WR's are geared with a wide range gearbox, 1st is low so standard trail gearing is fine. MX bikes use a close ratio gearbox with a tall 1st gear ( not great in the the tight stuff) These day's the WR engine is it's own and not related to the YZ, they run heavier cranks and bigger bearings and should last longer than MX engines although Yamaha recommends a freshen up @ 100 hrs, many people don't bother I'm told. Its a fantastic bike in every way, but can feel a bit heavy in the tight stuff.
I also have a 2014 Beta RR300 2T, it's super light @ 102 kg and when put against the WR in a sprint across a paddock it can hold it's own, it's got plenty of power and so much fun to ride and very easy in the tight stuff ( it can be ridden nice and quietly if you want) it's not scary at all. Lots of different 300 2T's to pick from Beta, Sherco, KTM, GasGas,husqvarna,Husaberg etc. I was told to change piston @ 100hr's. Still will be heaps cheaper than a 4T to freshen up.
If you want to race get an MX bike. Or get a trail, enduro bike for everything else. I'm 58 and love trail riding. Good luck and enjoy
My 2 cents

What's your budget ? a good 2nd hand 450 WR/RMX/CRFX 5=8g 2012 up .
The Enduros do weigh a bit more but that's because of E start , bigger exhaust, battery etc. They also use stainless valves were as the MX use Titanium, service intervals are longer.
A DR400E great fun/trail bike . bullet proof but dated when compared to a modern Enduro.
2 strokes either a 250/300 Husky, GasGas, Beta, Yamaha, TM, KTM easy to ride , FUN, low maintenance costs , light weight etc.
EG my Brother just bought a 07 Husky 250WR $3.7g included spares/parts his 1st MX/Trail bike in 25 yrs and loves it , he got the bug back riding my old KTM at VMX meets, he stuck to his budget and asked me for advice on the Husky .
Try a 2 smoke you might like them.

I got a wr and no im not going to gear it down:facepalm::facepalm:Actually dosent really need it as it has a reasonably low first anyway(compared to the crf) so no vids for you although the front wheel is not going to wear very fast :whocares::whocares:.
Anyone out there with old gear for a fat bugger they don't need?:innocent:.
