Anything that reduces weight OR increases power is technically illegal.
Of course the chances of you getting caught out are slim. Depends whether you're being a tool, what mood the cop is in, blah blah.
As for whether it's worth it, depends on how much $$$ you have to play with and how long you intend to keep the thing for. Don't plan on the exhaust increasing the resale by anything, is all I'll say.

A Ninja 300 sounds like crap with a noisy exhaust. Save your money for when you get a proper bike.

Plus one. The noise they make is bad enough to make a bogan cry.

me personally, I wouldn't bother, once you get your full you will want to sell and get a full power bike

Yup. That's the right answer.

Spoke to the guys down at tss Red Baron today and they reckoned since 2 weeks ago you can't add any power enhancing mods to a bike legally as a lams rider. True your chances of getting caught are slight but if you stack it and expect your insurance company to pay you out forget about it.

Behave... you're in the newbie section... everyone had to start somewhere.
As said, technically, anything that increases the power to weight ratio (reducing weight or increasing hp) is not legal for LAMS. No, it hasn't been for 2 weeks, it's been since LAMS began from memory.

I may have been 2 weeks ago an assessor had a look at a bike ridden by a LAMS rider and the bike had been altered.
Yippee says the assessor I can deny that claim. :eek5:
If they can find a reason not to pay out they will use it every time.
That's the first thing they look at.
Are we liable?? Lets have a close look for any alterations. etc.
Do your time and trade that bike when you can and buy another bike.

Clip taken from star insurance.
"What this also means: Learner and restricted riders, riding bikes on the prohibited list or modified to increase the power to weight of the bike will not be covered in the event of a claim."

Taken from state insurance.
"There’s no cover under this policy if the driver of any vehicle: 1. does not comply with all the conditions of his or her driver licence,"

Okay I'm with you. The way he said it made it sound as if there was some wiggle room with slower bikes previously. Example if you put an exhaust on a cruiser 250. It's not putting out much power and it weighs a ton so flicking on an exhaust still isn't going to bring its power to weight ratio up to anything above other lams approved bikes. That was what he told me anyway.
On another note I'm looking at buying an rc390....maybe as soon as today. Ridden Kim's for ages sxf 350, sxf 250 and exc 520, thoughts on the bike? To me it all seems pretty great. I mean the Honda salesman told me that I'll get a sore bum and sore arms after 3 hours of riding it but surely that part of the charm right :)?

If you really want to buy a bike, don't come here asking for people's "opinions". They're just going to talk you out of it. Go test ride them and make your own financial decisions.
Today's drinking game = 1 shot per time you hear the following:
-"Don't buy a new one, you'll drop/crash it"
-"Don't buy a new one, they're all crap, older bikes were better" (apparently speed beats safety, comfort, technology, handling, WEIGHT)
-"Don't buy that one, it's crap (but I've never ridden one, I just know)"
-"hoW du u manage 2 feeD urselF?" (or other poor attempts at trolling)
-"Wait (the 18/24 months) until you have your full licence before buying a decent* bike"
-"Don't buy a new bike, they're overpriced. Buy an older, high km, thrashed bike that's still overpriced instead (and costs more money to fix/maintain)"
Goodluck!
*debateable examples given of "decent"

Gremlin nailed it.
Regardless of your motivations for modifying a LAMS bike, the way people take the mickey out of the system has caused a very unambiguous set of rules to be written.
If you make a bike more powerful or lighter than it was the day it left the factory, it's non-LAMS compliant. End of.
I reckon there are only maybe 25 cops in the country who would realize that, so you have little to fear from the Popo about doing it. The problem is with the insurance issues.
It might be a silly rule, but it's been caused by the piss taking that's happened over the years.
Totally your call.

Seems pretty fair to me. You can still get yourself into plenty of trouble on a LAMS bike .

Then my work here is done.
Ps I get sore arms but not a sore arse on my Honda. Guess that's because I rarely take a pillion these days. Bit of a reach around required to maintain flow on the other hand.

now that really sets up the honda rider thing, did he explain why sore arms and sore ass after three hrs riding, i imagine that being on all fours for three hrs would give anyone sore arms but did he also tell you that knee pads would stop your knees from hurting so much, as for the ass, im not going there, but if thats part of your charm, so be it for me to say otherwise
