Thanks Ken, the reason I asked the question, was that I was reading an article about Sir Dove-Myer Robinson this morning. His underground rail scheme seemed too expensive for the ARA at the time @ $273m or $3.261b in today's money. $2.4b is today's estimate.

Are you comparing the same thing? The article mentions train service to Howick, train to the airport, etc. Lens tunnel 'o love is from Britotmart to Mt Eden. I can't believe how much it is going to cost, and how long it is going to take, compared with the same thing overseas. Tunnels through cities aren't new, and are not new technology. Norway is riddled with tunnels,, and the London Underground is forever adding and changing their tunnels. This one is very short by international standards.
As I recall, the original proposal for the Harbour Bridge included trains and more lanes, but the Prime Minster the time promised the cost would be less than 5m pounds so didn't include rail or footpaths. 7 years later they are putting the Clipons onto the bridge for $7.4m... The original proposal was to copy the Sydney bridge with rail as well.
Auckland - shafted by Wellington since ages ago.
