I came across this big sucker this afternoon on the road heading north out of Albany village and it's about 50 metres before the G.A.S. Station at the Coatesville-Riverhead highway turn-off.

I have reported it to *555 in the hope the police can cordon it off before anyone is injured.

Report it to Auckland Transport as well. When you do point out that it is a safety issue for all road users. Make sure you get a reporting number, I think that's what they call it.

+1 on this, explain its a hazard for bikers.
I did this on 2 areas and BOTH were 'fixed' within about 2 weeks

only problem road improvements are now signed off by the contractors, not an independant body, so if its not right it goes down to maintenance

i think this is the correct phone no: 3553553

they will ask for your name and as good a description as you can muster.
go for it.:2thumbsup

If it saves one person from going down then it's done the job.

With the obvious state of Auckland roads ... it should be compulsory .... ;)

So therefore riders in Christchurch will be more aware of potholes as daily road hazards - more than a few Auckland riders won't. So yes, there's a difference in mindset right there.

Not everyone wants to be Charlie Boorman on their daily commute or weekend scratch.

You missed the pun. A pot hole is a new low part of the road.

 alright.

Reminds me to go back there, lots and lots of slow corners on the East Cape coast road.

Doing 80 I didn't get a chance to avoid the one yesterday so used knees to grip the tank, loaded my bodyweight onto the pegs, kept throttle open and off the brakes. Forks bottomed out once in the hole and I've still no idea how me and the bike didn't go down.

So you had time to do all that but no time to avoid it?

Spot on. Happened within the space of about 10m or thereabouts. So about half a second travelling at that speed. Instant thought was better to hit the hole straight on and avoid the risk of clipping it. Keeping the throttle open and off the brakes didn't require time/effort; nor did a squeeze of the knees.

Report a pothole
https://at.govt.nz/about-us/contact-us/report-a-problem/

If noone reports it, it might not get fixed in time.

Just in Oz last week , some poor bikers on a Harley hit a hole in the road, came off and killed them both. Headlines in the paper.
I get annoyed that the councils and those responsible for organising repairs to roads and potholes etc are not onto getting repairs done quickly enough.
They should have crews that can turn on to any road damage as soon as it is reported, day and night with traffic management to assist.
It is said that it costs several million dollars per death on the road. Surely it is better to spend say $5000 - $10000 to fix a one off pothole.
Not without all the grief that it will put famililes to.
I must admit that I have occasionally contacted NZTA and local councils where roads have appeared unsafe to me.
And have got good response in all cases.
Looking at the poor state of some country roads in Australia it would seem things are not as good as here in NZ

To be fair I think the hole in Albany resulted from the previous day's downpour so not enough time for contractors to repair it. I would have avoided it if I'd been going straight on but I got caught out because of a mirror, head check, signal, manoeuvre in to the left filter lane ahead of a left turn on to the Coatesville-Riverhead highway. The photo shows the ding which will cost about $300 to be straightened versus $1,500 for a completely new rim. Btw, I followed up and reported it to AT and Popo. http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/05/19/364be65be6305d78f6194a0331073ba2.jpg

There's another massive pothole that has been filled twice now but keeps appearing... This one: https://goo.gl/maps/4rqxJ

If you're coming from albany village it's on the inside lane about halfway into the roundabout. I have hit it head on when it was a massive hole. It is a miracle my rim has no damage. If I was leaned over it'd be a different story again.
