Rules here: http://www.mnz.co.nz/docs/default-source/rules/chapter-25---road-racing---post-classic

Question I have is can I run my NC30 with an external reservoir shock and 17" rear wheel?

Neither of these are covered under 'Major Components', Shocks are not mentioned in the Pre89 section and wheels only specify a minimum size.

17" rear wheel was never standard on an NC30 but everyone seems to run them.
External reservoir shocks were available after '89 can't find any info about eligibility.

Just trying to get my head around the rules before I go converting a perfectly good road bike into a race bike I can't use.

Yep, thats fine. I had the same bike, with a NC35 wheel as well and it was no worries at all for the rules. The biggest concern with that model is the forks on the 90-93(?) had the little brass adjusters for compression and rebound on the top of the fork legs, and the 89 ones didnt have the adjustment as they were damper rod. 90-93 had the first of the cartridge forks. Itll only be an issue if you start winning, or if someone has something against you though :P

I'm having this same dilema on my NC30 which I am building for pre '89

Frame is an 89, front forks are '89 but the rear shock is a '92. I have the '89 shock if ever I need it, I wont worry bout that unless I start wasting everyone though :)

As for the 17" wheel, I will be running one when I find one. Most the top guys have converted to 17's in the PCR for the tyre selection.

Would be nice if I could run with the later model forks although I don't mind looking for some older ones.

Don't want to get into a situation where I turn up to race and get told my shock is ineligible.

Pretty sure you can run what ever rear shock you like.

Read Chapter 25 is best, but for ease see below

1) Shock is not classed as a major component, and only pre 72 has remove resv's banned.
2) Pre 89 wheel rim sizes allow 17's no issues.

Cheers, that helps.

If his chassis was made in 91 but there were no changes made since 89 is that ok? I thought that the frame had to be made at that time...

As above, first stop is read the rule book (and carefully!)"Later versions of the same models released (but not updated) eg Honda 750 K1-K6 may be acceptable as eligible for Pre 72 when competing in a racing class."

Examples of this would include NC30, OW01, TZR250W, FZR1000, CBR600, RC30 and parts thereof - ie any model that was in 89, but was producted without change to the major components after the cut off date. (or by making the parts that did change, the same to bring it into line if required)

Yes, but as i've pointed out before, while everyone accepts this rule applies to pre 82 and pre 89...it doesn't say so. I have no problem with it applying but IMO the book badly needs a tidy up.

Note the "E.g." which uses pre 72 as an example. The position of this rule is non specific to any age group within the rule book, covering all age groups. It's position is in the introduction where it talks about the age groups as a whole.

Sad isint it. You can cheat your arse off as long as you're not in the top five, or you're unpopular.
This is possibly the worst thing about racing.

Personally, I would rather win within the rules than by cheating. Still a wee way off that though (if ever:brick:).

Only because we the riders, do nothing if we see it. All riders have the power to fix it.

But in reality I see little that in the old bike racing (I didn't say none!) that is out there.

Your GSX is a great example of what IS kosha and on a relatively small budget.

Thanks for the comments. 89 forks sorted so should be on the grid sometime in the future

Are you high? Top five and unpopular people are still cheating!
