Going south on my RG!

Well, in 2 months time I am planning a trip... Auckland to Nelson, on my RG150 :O It could possibly be mechanical death, but im going to give it a try.
What would you guys recommend I get done as far as preperation goes?
Or doesnt this sound too smart?

I rode a Suzuki A50 from Auckland to Wellington an back,Two up on the way down.Mate you will rock in.
Just make sure you give it plenty of rests an don't hold it on full Rev' for long
periods.When I did it I kept on the left of the road side white line a lot,That was in the mid' seventys and the car drivers are faster an less forgiving today so watch ya' mirrors.As for set up,What Wikid said.
Oh yeah,take a puncture repair kit.

Should be easy.
I had one and did a 4 hour trip on it. Really enjoyed riding it on the open road. At full rev's your doing 180km/h, so you don't have any worries about cruising along at 100 -130km/h. Except for the obvious - :Police: - or not so obvious as the case may be.
You might want to pack your own brand of two stoke oil for the trip. I never liked to mix different types together.
Puncture repair kit? Not much use to me.
Have got flat tire, - have got puncture repair kit - Now what??! :argh:

A cheap set of ear plugs might help in enjoying the ride. Read the other thread posts about why.
See if anyone (from this site maybe), would ride part the way down with you.

Four of them. And buy Aerofast. These are the only ones I have never broken (have broken quite a few) - well worth the extra expense over some other brands.

That sounds like so much fun! I've just been in Nelson & loved it! I didn't ride though :weep: I'd love to take my bike over the Takaka Hill! Pity I can't join ya I'll be back at Uni up to my armpits in essays!! :bye:

at whitianga at new years i saw an (I think) RG150 with 2 up and enough gear to make a 650 beemer wince! if they could get over the hills with all that gear, then you'll make it to welly easily. remember - it probably only 2 or 3 tanks of gas - you use that all the time around town, and round town is much harder on everything than open cruising is.

chain tension and lube, tyre pressure, oil levels, maybe a spare spark plug or 2, tyre pando, and some basic tools is about all you'll need.

oh and some patience......

and a soft seat, or hard butt.

I have an RG and have done a few decent trips on it. They're bloody reliable bikes so you shouldn't have any mechanical trouble, the main thing thing that'll give you a headache is the blikin seat. They're flamin hard and you'll get a sore hind in about two hours, so plan lots of stops, or better still fit a sheepskin cover to it. I always planned that for mine but never got around to it. Apart from that - good luck!

Hi Batcerb, dunno wats wrong with these guys seats but my RG was primo, way better than the seat on my VFR or my CBR. Follow the usual advice, but i really recommend taking the 2-stroke oil. I've done 1000's of miles, lotsa big trips and often had trouble finding decent oil. If your RG is a 98 model you'll be sweet, but if it's a 2000 model they have a bad reputation for blowing up, i saw 3 in my mates bike shop last year, so moral of the story is don't ride for long periods with her screamin her head off and you'll be sweet. I also always recommend carrying a cell phone in your jacket pocket if you have one. Also if you don't have mates to call then an AA membership is also a good back up if you have problems you can't fix on the side of the road yourself. I too look forward to the stories.
