View Full Version : Straightening Clip on handlebars

Rikard
24th May 2015, 22:12
Hey all. Had a bit of an unfortunate accident the other week and ended up low siding after hitting some gravel. After replacing a few bits and bobs the bike is good to go apart from the fact that the handlebars are a little bent. Usually I would find a solid wall or lamppost and just force them back in to place but seeing as they are clip on bars I'm not sure if that's the best idea.

Does anyone have any advice as to whether or not I should just push them back in to place and if not, how best to go about straightening them?

Sounds to me like you should take it to a shop to fix.

We need photos.
Assume this is a new rc390?

Rikard

Thats the bike :). Happy to put up pics but I dont think they would tell you very much as the bars are 'just' out. I laid it down on the left side and the bike is turning right when the bars are straight. Based on that Im assuming that the left clip (half bar or whatever you call it) has bent backwards under impact.

Or a fork bent or they twisted in the triple clamps.

And you should get someone who knows to check.

Ok so you reckon just take it in to a shop? Probably not a bad idea. I'd love to fix it myself, but yeah would rather not do anymore damage :).

Idd be starting with loosening of all the fork to triple clamps and aligning them first with the bike front end jacked of the ground. Hard to tell if the clipon itself is bent. looks like the triples have twisted in the clamps though.

Awesome Mossy thanks for that mate I'll give that a go tomorrow. Is it common for the forks to twist/would you loosen from the middle clamp or top first or does that not matter?

Best would be take the wheel off. Loosen all clamps off take forks out then refit and do up clamps then refit wheel. Let bike back onto ground with wheel on but not done up tight. Let back onto ground and compress shocks a few times then do up axel nut and axel clamps. Owners manual may have wheel removal instructions.

This.

Bars looked straight when I saw them. I doubt the slide was enough to bend the forks, it didnt hit anything.

I agree. Looks like forks have twisted in the clamps. Loosen off and re align then retighten. All good.
It's very simple to do!
The clipon looks fine to be honest.

I thought that picture was of a bike that hadn't been down the road. Bar ends look mint along with the mirrors.

Bars go into the top triple? I wonder if that weakens the top triple if the bike takes a tumble?

Points for anyone that can make that a haiku.

Would expect the crafty engineers to have designed a snap of grove in the bar for that reason. Even my old RF has one of those.

So someone asks OP for a picture of his bars, OP posts a stock photo of a new bike (because OP is apparently not the sharpest tool in the box) and everyone starts commenting on the (obviously watermarked) stock photo making comments that the forks look tweaked etc.

This thread is full of stupid.

Don't always agree with Mr Gaynor but this time he's on it.

The OP doesn't seem to have extensive mechanical expertise, he should get someone who knows what they are doing to look at the bike. Different I know, but when the aluminum bars on my Ducati got bent I replaced them. Handlebars are actually quite important.

Assuming wheel was straight, yes.
What, you couldn't???? No surprises there.
And yes it is a photo of another bike so we have been informed, so yes the bars will look good aye! Slight kink in the bars would indicate now that it was sitting with wheel facing slightly to the left.
Are we all good now or do you need more explanations as you sometimes seem to need?:niceone:

Ditto, I'm confused as to why you would need to see the front wheel at all to know if the bars are bent.

From the picture that was posted, it looks like the OP should be able to pull the bar out of the triple. Leave the grip on, but take of the switch cluster, put a straight edge along that section and he'll be able to eyeball any bend in it.

Your fuckin hilarious Ya poof.
Trucker speed???

Your eyes could be slightly warped,(maybe the trucker speed aye) have a good close look at the photo. Steering is slightly favouring the left dick or are you still a bit high.
Who cares if it's a new one, no one says it will be sitting straight. Or can you guarantee it is with your stealthy sight? Seems it is just a tad blurred at the moment!

You'r talking a lot about bent things and poofs/gays etc, have you something you need to tell us or get off your chest, m'dear?

Is that not what Ephidrine tabs are often called?

No shit steering is pointing to the left, but you can see that is because the whole top yoke assembly is too (have a close look) so if the wheel were straight, it'd be the forks that were bent or twisted in the triple clamps. Might be why some smart cookies were suggesting loosening and re-tightening all those things as a first check.

Sitting straight? I said nothing of the sort, you just assumed it was; which led to your erroneous (even in the context of straight sitting) conclusion that the bars were bent. What I've alluded to at the very least, is that it is not sitting straight, which is why the unbent bars on it are turned slightly to the left.
