What you need is a trailer. Built mine for the Cold K and never got to use it.
Might keep the café racer and adapt the trailer perhaps.

COLD KIWI FOR DUMMIES.

While a huge number of Kiwi Motorcyclists have at some time 'done' one of more of the Thirty-Nine COLD KIWI Motorcycle Rallies there are still a lot of us out there who have yet to give it a shot. Some of us think of it every year; and put it off every year too! You'll know who you are; its not everyone's 'cup of tea' but for those keen to give it a go but haven't quite made it here's a few pointers to make it happen, and happen in style...

* I don't know anyone going. A lot of folk who are keen on doing a COLD KIWI simply haven't got around to it because they don't know anyone else going. The key to this is do you really need to go with someone else? If you're looking for a riding partner ask around, maybe at your local bike shop, or you may want to try WWW.KIWIBIKER.CO.NZ and link up with an individual or a planned group ride that these folks are running from some areas. If you want someone else for company at the COLD KIWI just arrive. The rally is chocka of folk just like yourself! Everyone is there to socialize with others, the 'Ice' was already broken when you rode through the gate. There are bikes of all shapes and sizes and riders of all shapes and sizes too; and everyone of them has a story to tell including you. Just get amongst it!

*Pre-Pay your ticket. This might sound like odd advice for an event that welcomes both Pre-Paid Entrants as well as gate sales but there are several clear advantages. The Pre-Paid meals are great. I usually crack my first tinnie at noon on Saturday; when the events kick off, by teatime a Roast dinner and pudding is just the ticket so I can behave like a poorly trained ape for a few more hours without falling over... While the 'over the counter' food is still damn good fodder I tend to like the forced eating time too. Once you've got your Pre-Paid ticket in your hot little hand the anticipation starts too, tell your mates; if they're looking for someone to go with its sorted and the plans unfold. Last but not least the RUAPEHU MOTORCYCLE CLUB have a prize draw for all Pre-Paid entrants too, you could score something too. Entry forms etc www.coldkiwi.co.nz or at most Motorcycle shops.

*Plan a different Route. The COLD KIWI is as much a destination and event as is the ride getting there. Wherever you're riding from take a map out and have a look at some alternatives and give them a shot. Chances are you'll see others out in the middle of nowhere doing just the same as you; and get chatting...

*Is it Cold? Yes and No! There's no doubt that Cold is a factor of the COLD KIWI Rally that's part of the tradition and the challenge too but in reality its easier than one thinks to be in comfort at the Rally. Thermals are a good move; most motorcyclists have already added some to their riding gear as well as a warm hat and gloves too. These items together with you riding gear should be enough to make you forget the cold still if you think you may need more for the weekend hit an Op-Shop. I'm not kidding, you can kit yourself out in gold old fashioned warm clothes for a few bucks and if you don't want to take them home toss them on the fire! Don't worry about fashion; there's no such thing at a COLD KIWI Rally!

*Additional Warmth. There's no denying that the COLD KIWI can at times be as 'Cold-as-a-Mother-In-Laws-kiss' so the Ruapehu Motorcycle Club provide plenty of warm spots to head for. There are two huge bonfires at the COLD KIWI, one for each night, as well as 44-gallon drum fires scattered around the camping areas. If you're cold when you arrive there's usually a big gas blower in the Marquee (yes Marquee) to blast some heat into you as well as hot coffee and food 24hrs at the food caravan. Remember the whole concept of the COLD KIWI Rally is to go out and play when 'normal' folk won't, after all there's a bit of eccentricity in all of us: just do it!

*Accommodation. While some people visit the COLD KIWI during daylight hours and scurry off to a Warm Bed for the night the majority spend the night/s on site. You'll need a good tent, good sleeping bag and either a sleeping mat or grab a few cardboard boxes from the caterers to insulate you from the ground. If you'd rather find a roof over your head for the there's plenty not to far away but it pays to book early as its still Ski Season at that time of the year.

*Food and Drink. There's full catering facilities 24hrs on site with a sit down area to 'Dine' in. Hot water is also available at the Food Caravans for you hottie etc. A licensed Bar is well stocked with various products at good prices too. The Parties on when you get to the Rally folks so take it easy on the way there

*Have a go at some Events. There are several hours of Events at the COLD KIWI catering for all sorts of people, you can either sit back and watch the happenings or get in amongst them yourself. While some like the Hill Climb and the Wheelie contest take a reasonable amount of skill and of course there's a risk to your bike, the Ruapehu Motorcycle Club also put on a range of events for the novice too. The slow race is a classic example of this, get some practice in before you get to the Rally if you like; there are also some events that you don't even need a bike to enter. Prizes are a bonus too; there's plenty of them at the COLD KIWI Rally.

* partying. it's a licensed bar and camping area so the countries rules apply, the cops do visit as part of the bar license and have the ability to shut it all down and oppose future licenses if there are breaches. Remember too new limits are in place for the road since last years rally, a lot of people are chossing to go hard on friday night and have a quiet satruday so they have the energy to ride home, and will be able to face a breath tester too. There are voluntary breath tests available as an indication only at the rally at certain times. It is still your responsibility to make sure you are safe to ride. the gear is checked but is not the same as the law uses so there is no guarantee but at least it's there.

*Take a camera. There's so many toys to see that its worth having one of these items to take it all in later; and to rub your mates who missed out on a damn good weekend noses in it.

Last year was not cold, But I saw some that thought it was freezing..... Wool is great, wool thermals under the gear is great and good to sleep in, wool jumper and hat, A good sleeping bag and you will be warm as toast... just make sure you fit in it before going, they are not a one size fits all......

I lent a spare tent to one guy, he froze, didn't fit in his sleeping bag, I also gave him my snow boots I took in case my feet froze, who new smooth sole bike boots would be bad on wet grass and dirt (take boots that are warm and have traction)

If you want to sleep dont tent right beside the fire :P

Talk to your bank and get onto that shit, pronto!

The guy I bought the tankbag off still hasn't got the thing to me.
4 weeks since I bided and 2 weeks since I won it.
That's becoming frustrating as im not sure if his busa ring will fit the bandit yet as the design changed on the busa in 2008 and his bike was first registered 2008. Im hoping his was a 2007 model. Maybe I can fill and redrill the mount if I need to.

It was an interesting new site. But afterwards the organisors said via FB that no one was supposed to be camping at the top of those hills like in picture. That put me off wanting to go back for the 40th not that I go to rallys often anyway, I need time to forget how uncomfortable sleeping on rocks is lol.

COLD KIWI FOR DUMMIES.

I wonder if falling patronage is also due to bikers not visiting bike shops very often. My first one was result of seeing the flyer in bike shop and asking whats all that about. The dude in shop made it sound irresistible and the first one in Snow by myself on an overloaded FZR250 was awesome at the old original site. Dude in question never packed a tent he just drank and slept wherever he passed out lol

Anyway my tips have a big feed in Waiouru just before you get there, good value at the truckstop diner.
Take a tent but don't plan on sleeping in it, think of it more as place to just lie down occasionally.
The wind will blow your tent over no matter how flash it is, so parka bike around the other side to tie it to.

Yeah that new drink drive limit will be trap for the unwary...

I'll wait till when there s a decent snow forecast to go again...

why did it put you off? pretty well the whole site has been re contoured now with new grass sewn, very few rocks around. In case you don't get it, the Cold Kiwi and Brass Monkey have an element of less comfort levels than your own home, that is what they're about....

I'll wait till when there s a decent snow forecast to go again... so whakapapa have their forecast up now and it's for snow, it looks like the main rain will run through higher up the country than the rally site so i'd give it a 50/50 chance of snowing on the site this weekend.
as for falling patronage, it has maintained a steady number for the last few years, have you noticed there aren't as many bikes on the raod as there was years ago?

Oops, I'll keep quiet about the camping gear I'm taking then.

Forecast suggests showers, but I guess that my tent will keep me dry.
I'm still going because I'm not a little girlie wuss that gets put off by a little precipitation.
Light winds predicted, shouldn't be many tents blowing away.

I thought that the previous venue was better, but of course when the owners of the land are being dicks it really makes things impossible for the rally organisers. Better to have good land owners that don't fuck you about than a better venue but with dickheads to deal with.

rocks read hard ground, uneven gorund figure of speech of bare land vs real bed. No shit Sherlock about rallys/camping etc being diiferent to bed at home.... I can rough it when I need to/want to, its just another element in the decision making process of what I want to do with whole weekend of my time, about $200 worth of expenses and 500km worth of mileage on bike....

The most recent one prior to the new one, Tangiwai I presume.
The venue itself was really good and the club had done a lot to make it that way. The hill climb was especially good, last year the hill climb was a bit of a joke IMO.
I miss the trees, I would have liked to try a hammock attached to them, the new venue is nothing but a paddock.
I do have a lot of sympathy for the organisers though, it can't be easy to find the perfect venue with perfectly co-operative land owners.

not every site has a hill, the club worked with what they had available. I will point out that participation in the events was at an all time low, at other sites it was easier to go and get your bike once you sawit was fun, but due to the hilly nature of the site people couldn't be arsed. the club can provide the venue, the games but it's up to the punters to join in and make them happen.

You mention a paddock, take a look at the first post here, paddocks are flat, this site had lots of character, and clearly the glass half empty attitude meant you couldn't find a tree or two to swing a hammock in , there are some there.
I'll be there. and i'll have some fun no matter what.

You think that paddocks are flat?
I suppose some are, many are not. I live in the Waikato, I know the huge variety paddocks come in.

If you read my post properly you would realise that I wasn't bitching about the club or saying it was their fault that the hill climb didn't match the previous one.
I was in fact saying pretty much what your first sentence says.
It is also important to understand that I never said that I regretted going to the last Cold Kiwi or that I didn't enjoy myself.
Not everyone that points out some negative factor is crying, bitching or putting anyone down.

I'm not too sure what you are referring to with the glass half empty thing, I was only pointing out that the glass had some liquid and some air in it - you know, realistic appraisal of the situation. I walked around the entire site and saw no where I'd try to set up a hammock (I didn't have one anyway, I was casting my mind forward to future rallies).
Regardless, I'm going to the Cold Kiwi this year no matter the venue or weather and I'll be warm and comfortable when I go to sleep.
I try to realistically view the situation and work with what is available, I'll look again at possible trees, but I'm prepared for what I expect:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-SCTS79GXAI0/VdfDOBb6OjI/AAAAAAAAE6E/VwcIki9tAyU/s1032-Ic42/Hammock_Stand_03.jpg

I don't let too much stop me from doing what I want to do.
The situation is what it is and we just need to make the most of it.
I'll be at this Cold Kiwi just like I was at the last one and plan to be at the next one.
I've even got a few days off work and I'm currently sorting out my gear, charging torch batteries, dehydrating my Friday & Saturday dinner, etc.

I took a heap of photos, but returned to work today and haven't sorted through them yet.
But I was there and it was pretty good for the most part, weather was a bitch but it did fine up on Saturday and they held all the usual events with the weather being amazingly co-operative.

They changed that hill, removed quite a few rocks and that really did make a big difference.
I'd rate the hill at the previous site a bit better, but the hill climb went well this year so big ups to them for getting it decently sorted.

Yeh there was that but everyone pitched in to get the bikes out :)

The Kiwi is what you make of it.
Generally I lead a few of us down HoraHora Rd - Old Taupo Road (lovely piece of road that) then round the back of the mountain to a late Lunch at the Railway Station Cafe at National park ( nice food, nice spot, undercover parking) We buy meals at the Kiwi, Sat Breaky and night Meal and then Eggs Benedict breaky back at the station cafe. Ride home through Otorohanga and up the back of the river till we hit Hwy one at Rangariri.

Friday is always the best band and most pissed night (and my head told me I overdid it, Awesome night!), Events on Sat and than more of a round the camp fire night sat night. Thats generally our Kiwi or the Kiwi.

Best fucken weekend you can have if your man enough!
Bit colder and the Mud was a pain this year but the Kiwi isnt for latte drinking Sunday riders, its for bikers!!
Although the shit people are trailering in, is a sad sight at least the long road in at the last site prevented that.
How the fuck they can enjoy the ride down with all the shit they take beggers belief??
MAX, Cold Kiwi kit, What your wearing incl thermals under, Good Sleeping bag, tent, bed roll, LED head torch, Fire starters, thats it!!
My kit doesnt come above sissy bar height.
Ride, Drink, Talk bullshit and laugh!

The old site was better I reckon, Especially the hill climb, but the club cant be blamed for the greedy pricks wanting to much money.
This year my only minor grip was a lot less fire wood delivered round, other than that A+

NO Poopoo tickets, bikes gonna take more then one clean to get it right, but you always remember the Kiwi for its challenges. Couple years ago, the snow, last year new site, this year was mud (because the farmer re grassed to close to the event)

Fucken good Cold Kiwi again Spyda and the Club!!

Quote of the Cold Kiwi - Sausage Grab - "You cant spit it out, its a sign of disrespect" LMAO

One of my most enjoyable, let loose, weekends every year!! Bring on 2016

Mud Mud glorious mud :D

No dramas about the mud for me, no help required....... Actually I think it must be time to clean mine, Muckoff to the rescue, well when I get time, Probably after the bikers in blue ride :D

I do have one gripe though..... the hot water for the tea and coffee was not hot enough :violin:
