View Full Version : Driver runs into motorcyclist, after he yells to stop texting

There is a lesson to be learned here for you gopro heros.

https://www.yahoo.com/autos/s/driver-runs-motorcyclist-yells-stop-205458513.html

Hope they find this BMW prick and lock him up!

What is the matter with people, why can't they mind their own shit. Obviously the BMW driver is enemy #1 here, but what was the rider hoping to accomplish by instigating this whole thing? Just mind your own business and get to work safely. A painful lesson for this guy to learn.

I'm also always suspicious of this kind of thing:

It was a fairly typical commute, full of cagers cutting me off, merging into me and generally just not paying close enough attention.

Some people just seem to attract this kind of thing. Most of us get to work every day without issue, only occasionally encountering these problems. I get the feeling people like this are constantly looking for trouble, which is a bit of a shit way to ride.

First they try to kill you by texting & driving, then when that fails, they actively try to kill you by running in to you deliberately.

To be fair, the BMW driver was texting and quiet possibly didn't see the bike when it cut in front of him resulting in the bike/rider going to ground..

I don't have a problem with people texting at the lights. Better than while moving thats for sure.

OddDuck
3rd June 2015, 12:02
Well... I thought the rules about phones and cars were pretty simple: hands-free is OK, a standard cellphone is not. Doesn't matter whether you're at the lights or moving, a normal cellphone keeps your eyes off the road and your hands off the controls. As soon as "texting at the lights" is OK then that's the gateway to everything else.

Next time you're riding on a straight stretch of 50 kph road, have a look in the oncoming windshields - it is truly jaw-dropping what some Kiwi commuters reckon is OK to do behind the wheel. Eating from a tray with utensils, applying makeup in the rearview mirror, arranging hairstyles (with both hands), and of course yakking on a cellphone or texting. While steering with one hand through a tight intersection. I've seen it all.

Cars just seem to turn some people into morons.

Heres a trick i learned off a fellow KB member, If someone is texting next to you at the lights, they can see you in their periphirel vision. suddenly roll forward while your light is red then stop, they will instinctively take off & either hit the car in front, or enter the intersection under red light. Either way they will learn their lesson about texting & driving without the need for you to become directly involved.
The same chap told me about tooting the horn hard out when you see someone teeing off on a golf course. Its fantastic entertainment if you get the timing spot on (about a third of the way down on the gravy stroke) & im always amazed how many times people are teeing off when I pass a golf course.

I've read and to be fair, posted some stupid comments on this site, but this has to be up there. Why would you want to cause an accident, to make a point about potentially causing accidents. Come on man.

"Oh look this guy left his bicycle unlocked, I'll steal it and teach him a lesson about how easily he could have it stolen."

As for the video, well isn't it convenient that it starts and finishes exactly with that confrontation. I'm sure that the footage immediately preceding this video is of absolutely no interest nor consequence. And yes swearing at someone and brake checking them while they exit out of an intersection is surely a reasonable reaction to them briefly being on their phone at a stop light.

It might not be reasonable to run someone over over some stupid traffic BS but if you're going to start a confrontation with a car then don't act all surprised when it hits the fan.

Its not anything like stealing someones bike to teach them a lesson. If theyre breaking the law & using me as a pace car I cant really be held accountable for their stupidity & inattention. My conscience is clear.

So if:

- You try and spook them into running a red
- They get spooked and run a red
- They take out (likely) a cyclist or (less likely) a motorcyclist or car

Your conscience is clear?

Ok good for you, I mean if I was the cyclist getting taken out or the car getting rear ended or whatever I would think you were a complete tw*t for making the road a more dangerous place and giving yourself a pat on the back about it, but I'm not that person (yet, anyway) so I'll hold my tongue. I mean for me I've learned the hard way that it's not about being right it's about people not getting hurt because that just sucks for everyone.

Heh, that reminds me of a time when I was with a mate in my car coming up to the lights when this other car pulls up next to me and the driver starts mouthing off that I'd cut in front of him a short distance back.

I was sure I didn't, but he wouldn't hear it so my mate started to get out of the car and the guy then bolted and got a car length into the intersection before he realised we were still on a red.

Luckily there was no crash, but we all actually cracked up laughing.

I agree 100% with you. Same as people who play policeman and brake check trucks, what if that truck loses control and hits other traffic.

Back to topic, both are twats but the biker is the key fool here. If you want to front someone up about something you have to be ready to ride the dragon wherever it takes you...
And there are nutters out there some with gang connections or hangers on that will go ape at being told off about anything. Let the police do the policing...
And what would your insurance company say in such circumstances when you had the opportunity to avoid engaging in dangerous scenario...

Fuck me, its nothing like brake tapping someone & Im not sure how its spooking someone either, its not like i run up to their window & yell BOO!! GREEN LIGHT!! spooking them into running a red is a job I leave to the Police. I know for a fact that more people are killed each year running from the Police than from mimmiking my behaviour at a traffic light & their conscience seems clear.

At least his dangly appendage didn't cause him to back pedal when he saw her pretty face :msn-wink: But he also didn't appear to make much effort to get away from her - it looked like he had any number of opportunities to put some distance between their vehicles. He obviously felt unassauged after his first outburst so took every chance to back it up (especially when she so considerately stopped in the middle of her lane to interact with him).

That has to be the best ad ever on why not to wear a go pro... couple of things going on here.

Apart from making himself look a total douche, he's nutting off and threatening a woman with her kid in the car. Looking at the Big SUV with mags its not the sort of thing woman generally buy. Add that and the kid and I'd say there's one bad motherfecker of a hubby somewhere, possibly a 1%er who will now be looking for the biker that nutted off at his missus.

Now when is the vid coming out of someone being obstrcuted by a goho hero blocking the lane telling someone else off, that will be comedy gold.

She totally smoked him after the first telling off, check out also the car on red median strip going hard too...

Someone cuts you off, you give them the finger and they are incensed.
History suggests humans are amongst the dumbest species on the planet so it pays to be careful out there, ride your own ride, wave to the cows.

I'd be more annoyed at the person who hit me (I mean, provided I could still speak and breathe etc), but yeah I mean if you did something to try and make that person f*ck up then yeah I'd be annoyed at you too.

eg.

Bro one: "Hey bro pull a sick drift around this blind corner"
Bro two: "Lol ok"

*a wild motorcyclist appears!*

*wild motorcyclist has fainted!*

Bro two: "O noe I just murdered that guy oh dear oh dear oh dear"
Bro one: "Lol not my problem I had nothing to do with it ok bye"

So yeah bro two shouldn't have done a mean drift, but bro one, knowing full well that bro two was a liability, shouldn't have encouraged him and I'd be mad at the pair of them.

This afternoon heading north on Southern m/way following another bike......yes we were 'filtering'.

As lead bike goes past a Mazda 3 the car makes an abrupt left. Stays within lane but causes lead bike to brake heavily.

As he proceeds past, I follow and observe the driver texting as he drives.......

Go-Pros. Pretty sure my opinion on these is well recorded on KB.

I'm not dealing with the record your life and spit it out on the internet very well. Unless you are a attractive woman and doing weird stuff with a bratwurst sausage ......

I've noticed in most cases the motorcyclist is: A. speeding, B: abusing someone (puffed up because they are recording it?), C: a angry, angry man.

Now I'm 50. Been riding since I was 16. People have been trying to knock me off (have a couple of times) for decades. Part of the drill really, ride accordingly.

Yeah I've packed a few sads over the years but generally on close calls I have just been happy to be able to get home, change the undies and kiss the kids.

No interest in recording it for the world.

Hypocrisy is alive and well everywhere it would seem. Followed a rider recently in Auckland, starts with him zooming thru what to me looked like a red light, followed by several interesting lane changes. Catch up to said rider at a red light and watch him getting all bent out of shape and yelling at a driver on the cross traffic because he's yapping on his cell. Here's me thinking pot kettle...and most of the Go-Pro crap falls in the same category. Funny but perhaps not for the reasons the camera operator thinks
