I was actually pretty impressed with the sentence.

In reality it was a terrible accident caused by stupidity and negligence. But it was still an accident. 18 months in prison and $61,000 in compensation, feels like a just verdict to me.

And probably not a very pleasant 18 months in general population either. May even need the protected wing of the Milton Hilton ... <_<

Reality is its probably only 1/2 that in the big house, the money :shit:could have been a millon i am betting whatever the $ figure it means fuck all to her parents."it was a terrible accident caused by stupidity and negligence" doesnt wash for me the stupid cunt travelled a long way down a very straight road on the wrong side of the road,he had got as far as he had without killing anyone else by following friends but chose to leave after them from a popular tourist spot.It was simply a major fuckup on his part that deserved more than a slap on the wrist.

Having driven on the wrong side of the road before, even after traveling for several days on that side of the road, something just clicks and you don't notice that you're on the wrong side of the road. Thank fuck for my passengers lol... but it is something that happens without intentional negligence and/or stupidity.

Shit decision to have to make. Wonder if the parents had a hand in the verdict?

Dunno but if some cunt was walking past me on his cell phone whilst my daughter was dying as a result of him being not able to simply drive on the correct side of the road i would be asking for a shitload more than what he got, calling it an accident is little more than an excuse but then on reflection it is the New Zealand justice system so what am i thinking:wacko:theres an excuse for everything.

Agreed, thing is at the time of the accident the prick showed no interest at all in what he had done which continued on for some time as when the deceased little girls uncle who had driven from Oamaru to the accident showed up he was still frantically making calls without even then showing any interest in anyone else involved i will add that though the drive wasnt that far it took a fair old time as he had to get passed a shitload of traffic held up on there way to a Super 15 game in Dunedin. All that aside and yea i guess theres some bias on my part as i know the people involved to call such an incident an accident seems fucked up to me,it was complete incompetence to put it politely and the sentence should have reflected that.Personal responsibility...anyone remember such a thing?

To be fair ive no idea fella but whether he is or not to me anyway matters little he got into a motor vehicle without the skill to use it safely which resulted in a little girls departure and a short stay in jail wont dissuade anyone else from doing the same,as i said earlier the monetary figure is irrelevant and personally i wouldnt accept a dime of a court appointed figure to supposedly appease my emotional grief.

Mike - I have been a bit perplexed by this incident so have also tried to put aside my anger and wonder what it would be like to be in the foreign drivers position.

Bare in mind him being Chinese he is entirely a stranger in a strange land and very limited ability to speak English and has fucked up big time - not a good place to be!

Obviously he didn't do what he did out of malice or on purpose - his race does not show emotions exactly the same way that we do but he may possibly feel the same!

How would it be for us in a Chinese jail with the same horrible responsibilities hanging on our shoulders and an inability to show any signs of remorse Chinese style!

Maybe it was our own countries behaviours and customs that let everybody down and contributed to the whole thing?

There but for the grace of (???) go I - or you - or anybloodybody? - can't undo it - maybe we can prevent it happening again though!

Fair post John but lets not forget as i said earlier he got to where he was safely by FOLLOWING friends more accustomed to our roads and then chose to let them leave ahead of him....then upon setting off from the tourist spot drove directly onto the wrong side of the road and the rest is history, accident? no way.Sincerely i get what your saying but for my money he took a gamble and left a mess,9 months in the big house wont change any future fuck ups.

No doubt it's something the wider family are going to carry with themselves forever. I'm not defending the guy's inattention, but wrong time wrong place and a lot of other factors culminated in something exceptionally distressing happening. We're never gonna stop those sort of things, as there's no way to really gauge experience behind the wheel. I would feel a lot safer if tourists had to pass a wee test, but I dunno how logistically possible that could be (as I know how easy it is to end up on the wrong side of the road)? Til then we can only be more attentive I guess.

Yep, was the same when I've driven overseas. I always assumed that driving on the right would be fairly natural - fuck me it took A LOT more attention that I expected.

It's a shitty situation - how would jailing him for life make it any better?

Whilst I agree with the sentiment that jailing him does not improve the situation - I find myself asking this:

18 months for Taking a human life on the NZ roads
vs
18 years for taking a human life off the roads.

Even if intent is factored in, There seems to be a disconnect between the consequences of doing something retarded resulting in death and doing something retarded in a car resulting in death.

You could hang him from a bridge but it won't make any difference and won't stop some other tourist from fucking up and doing the exact same thing.

As long as we allow people to drive here who are used to driving on the other side of the road this kind of tragic incident will continue to happen. Thankfully these crashes are as rare as fuck.

:angry2:And this Mother fucker will get it too...Cos he's rich enough to win in our courts with the right moraless & expensive lawyer, hence our joke justice system will just roll over and accomodate the slimey gutless CHILD KILLER!!

...just can't get over how heartless this prick has been, from walking around talking on the phone while a 5yr old dies in her dads arms, and from using a translator in court (When he speaks fucking english!...but just dosn't want to during the court process), and from the lack of honest remorse for what he's done...I was truly hoping a Oamaru lynch mob got him as left the court practically laughing!!

...NZ should be making an example out of this prick...not letting him EXPLOIT our justice system! (Would they give us this right in China?...I think not!)

It does indeed.

It won't make it any better, because these incidents are not intentional. I'd be interested to know what the parents think.

After having lived and driven in the states for the last 17 years, when visiting home driving on the left really needs my full attention. Nothing is natural and all my instincts are telling me summat aint right.

However, accident, inattentiveness, or just bad luck, this guys behavior immediately after the incident says he should have the book thrown at him.

If all of you on this thread knew what you don't know you wouldn't be posting the heavy-duty rant that you are.

I know some pritty solid facts as stated by the father & court witnesses

The guy

- Drive on the wrong side of the road for a very long time
- Showed no remorse at the scene
- Offered no first Aid at the scene
- Showed no remorse in court
- And only AFTER public outrage, offered an apology

...if it walks like a dog....barks like a dog...then it usually leads me to believe it is a dog I'm looking at mate

But...if you say there's more to it, and were blowing it out of proportion etc...then I'm quite happy to take your word for it over others.

Just a terrible bloody thing to happen to that family...its kind of easy to relate and get ya heckles up over the senseless loss.

A good reminder that the majority of us know jack shit except for what the media has told us.

And as recently as just before lunchtime today I heard how few shits journalists can give for balanced reporting.
