When I first arrived here, hopped on the motorway and flashed someone doing 80 in the outside lane (still thought I was in Europe lol). Promptly got brake tested - I had my 2seconds but the guy behind didn't.
Now on the bike, it sit in their mirror then flick my indicator on. I find it works 2/3 times.

Not explicitly - because our rode code was written in the days of the horse and cart.
We do have: illegal to overtake on left, keep as close to the left as possible and fookin logic.
Ever wondered why our motorways are less congested but slower? Probably about time we started driving properly...

Of course we do, keep left and don't impede flow of faster traffic, or words to that effect. Most folks think we don't have it because it's not enforced with enthusiasm.

Check the UK road code, it's rules regarding motorways are very different.
My question was about the Auckland drivers comment as well...

You only need to look at an escalator to see keeping to the side is a general concept most over here don't grasp, but it's not like it really adds much time to a journey anyway.
And if you think the North is bad, absolutely no one down South does it. Half the time people even fuck up passing lanes and slow vehicle bays  No use stressing though.
That video is gold too haha. The fuzz was pretty patient with them too.

Common sense or courtesy obviously needs reinforcement for bottle babies.

Yes escalator etiquette is learned promptly in London. Maybe Westfield could do a global education campaign :(

You can stand stationary on the left, whilst keeping the right hand free for people that like to walk/run down/up the escalators
if you go on the Underground during rush hour, you will very quickly learn this.

I think you might find it's the other way round... "Stand to the Right" admonish the little signs on the escalators on both the Underground and the Tube, which always seemed slight contrary for a country the drives on the left...
Another 'oddity' in this fashion is that mainline trains in France travel on the left whereas the metros and suburban trains travel on the right...

Yup, you move to one side (side depends on the country) so others can get past you. It's handy when you're in a rush for a train/bus/hot air balloon or just don't like to be standing still.

Prob because we have a motorway design with junction where traffic merges/enters from the right lane (northwestern in Auckland onto sh1 southbound spaghetti junction)
Can you be a lane hog on an empty motoway??? Lots of trucks were/are doing that on night runs in Auckland due to feral trash throwqing rocks from roadside....

yup, learnt escalator etiquette in Japan - had never really thought about it before.
As for lane hogging, it's just part of our f*ck-u mentality as NZ drivers. We really do think we're the only important one on the road! (From a lifetime of observing rude and ignorant drivers on varying numbers of wheels...)

hogging the outside lane is one thing, its when you have two vehicles side by side doing 90kph on a stretch of motorway that the patience of even the most saintly will get tested. Not that I am into sweeping generalisations (spoiler alert) but yesterday morning was a case in point. Little old man in his glorified shopping trolley doing 90 on the inside lane, fair enough. "Mature" woman in a fuck-off-I-am-more-important-than-you soft top mercedes doing same speed alongside him for about 10kms was the thing that frustrated me, then there is no opportunity to take advantage of our rules which do allow passing on the left. She had absolutely no clue what was going on behind her. Meanwhile the cameras-in-vans were making our roads safer.

Or try being stuck behind one slow truck behind another heading north from Atiamuri, then the second truck pulls into the passing lane going up Tar hill, and uses the whole length of it to get past, at about 80k.

Driving in NZ is shockingly bad full stop. Keep right is a big one, as is general road etiquette and manners. If I have to undertake, then I do. On the bike, used to just accept the fact that sometimes it would purely be a case of playing slalom through the traffic. Driving overseas is always such a great pleasure given the more adult attitudes that people display.

Concur. Loved riding around Europe.
I've adjusted my attitude here as much as poss. When my progress is thwarted by numpty behaviour I try to think of the savings in fuel, tires etc. Still have the odd spit, though, in extreme cases.

Why are you of such great importance that you need/deserve to get past sooner than the second truck?
Do you wait for vehicles that might be able to overtake faster behind you to pass before you do?
If sharing the road makes anyone angry they should take a bus.

Actually, I frequently do let vehicles that are clearly quicker than me go first at a passing lane, particularly if I've clearly been holding them up for the previous 20 mins. It's called courtesy, or possibly manners or etiquette, and I indeed consider it part of sharing the road with others. Strangely those that I see least likely to share with others, like to call themselves "professional drivers".
The other point is that for the rest of the time they are driving 10km/hr slower than I am allowed to drive. Did I say it made me angry? Or were you talking about Ronnie, the angry self-righteous truck driving twat?

yeah not you in particular mate, just in general ;) So much rage on the road should be self directed. You don't see people going off on the sidewalk because they can't walk as fast as they want. It's a public space and you just have to go with the flow.
Nice that you do. So many people that whinge or drive aggressively when held up a bit have some sort of belief that they can/will/must go faster than anyone without impediment but if someone wants to go faster than them then they are just going too fast and can wait :brick:
The Speights branded car that does a run down the coast once a month is a perfect example of this. They can't drive for shit but bring shame upon their family every time they are passed or something :nono:
To me a truck I've caught up to that wants to pass another one is first in line, no problemo. He's obviously getting held up too.

Personally (if I want to pass, more often now in a car I just cruise with whoever I've caught up with if they're keeping a steady pace) I get a run up so I don't hold anyone up, including myself, instead of accelerating like a snail in the actual lane, and then usually end up catching up to the 'faster' cars that do 120-130 on the straights when they slow down to 50 for any slight bend in the road

There's a number of scenarios that can bring that situation about but to use the whole length of atr hill would be highly unusual.

Unless you do exactly that, and as you're about to pass the vehicles in the slow lane, the last one wakes up, puts its indicator on while moving then suddenly realises there is a large van right there.
Pulls back in, but you've already braked and you spend most of the passing lane re-gaining the speed and slowly passing <_<
No... never had that :angry2:

It's not that unusual, particularly later at night. Car drivers do do that, but not usually the full length, and usually can get a bit more speed up a bit more quickly.
Also around midnight or so on SH1, the trucks drive in convoys, often so close together that in most of the passing lanes, you need to be able to pass the whole lot of them, as there nowhere open to pull back in safely. They get all kinds of pissed off if you cut them off.
It's also funny how they are only too happy to force you to drive 10 km/h slower than you usually would for great long stretches, and then when you get in front of them, and force them to drive 10 km/h slower than they like to go, they get all het up about it. :bash:

Doesn't matter how close they are. They have a legal obligation to allow you to merge back in.
I've had to push a truck out of the way once or twice because of this (I usually find them pretty accommodating though). It's amazing what you can achieve if you look like you're prepared to ram them.

Yep. This is why we should have compulsory OE to the UK so we can all learn how to drive properly. Learn that simple road manners, like keep left unless passing, a bit of courtesy on the road and wow, everyone moves along quicker and safer.
And while there you learn escalator etiquette. But again, that's not what it really is. It's just being courteous and showing an ounce of consideration to others all the time.
Working in Wgtn CBD I call it the walk of the unemployed. Dropkicks with no where to go, so they drag their knuckles along the footpath like our ancestral cavemen, moving at a snails pace on a busy footpaths and suddenly they lose use of their lower limbs when stepping onto an escalator. Why is that? Mine still function fine? It's called walking dipsticks. I wonder if these people would starve to death if a power cut happened while travelling on an escalator? Is it some inherited gene deficiency. Oh yes it is. Bloody lazy slobs syndrome.
The unemployed should not be allowed into CBDs during peak times until they pass a common courtesy test.

Lane hogging now a "ticket ($200 and 25demerits)" rather than court offence in the UK, but this guy disagreed.
Instead, he went to court, didn't show and got fined $1880 and 42demerits. What a noob lol.
