View Full Version : NZ drivers' road rage?

Been overseas for a while riding a while.
Got back to NZ and the thing I noticed most was the anger amongst NZ drivers if someone does something the slightest bit wrong.
What the heck is wrong with us.
Is there an inner built up anger in NZ drivers and Riders that is just bursting to get out.
It is as though someone makes a small error and its the end of world, scream shout honk the horn.
I say get a life, just chill out. It could be your son or daughter that has made that mistake.
These actions of the few idiots we have on NZ roads are not apparent in the states and some other countries.
Just witnessed a car with a trailer pull out of a driveway the driver in the white van, who had the right of way, had to slow a little. (in a 50kmh area)
Wow you should have heard the shouting and hooting bad language for causing them slow down. (what a inconvenience)
These angry drivers need to be named and shamed. Report them or Regos to *555
I am determined not to be like this.
What must tourists think of us????

That's because there are a lot of slack drivers in NZ who ignore even the most basic driving rules like keeping left of the center line, using indicators , giving way etc.Its no wonder some people go off as its such a common occurrance. As a truck driver I can tell you its very frustrating when some one pulls out in front of me, when they could have waited 5 seconds for me to pass, but no they pull out then doodle up the road 20ks under the speed limit, with no idea I'm trying to pull up a heavy load under heavy braking.

Or the wanker with the trailer could have waited two seconds for the van to go past.
Its one of the most frustrating things that can happen on the road IMO - a person is in such a hurry that they cant delay there trip for a few seconds so they pull out of a side road or driveway in front of you causing you to brake hard and slow considerably and then they amble down the road at 70 or 80 ks. Cunts - every last one of them.

The attitude of "this is my road" has long been part of the New Zealand psyche - nothing new there. What has changed is the extent that some will go to to defend their road space - it gets uglier as time passes.
I had a good one a last week. Turning left at an intersection, an oncoming car did a right turn across my path (in contravention of the new give way rules). Rather than get all road-ragey about it, I slowed a little and let them go through. This outraged the guy behind me, who flashed his lights, hit his horn, and screamed abuse out of his window. He was still hurling abuse at me at the next intersection. And all because he had been held up for a couple of seconds.

It is strange, some of the most laid back people in the world until we get behind the wheel.
I spent 20 years in the UK and drove all over Europe before moving here.
Complete lack of courtesy here and so much rage.
Re trucks/vans slowing on the motorway, in the UK you will see many artics move to the middle lane as they approach a junction without even checking if anyone needs to join. No skin off their nose - helps the people joining.

I had never heard of the phrase 'road rage' (or seen any real examples of it) before I worked as a courier in London in the mid-90's.
I just put it down to the frustration that drivers experienced being stuck in traffic jams.
As our traffic has become more congested our frustration levels seem to be producing similar results.

I haven't noticed much road rage or bad behaviour out there, or I could be one of the unobservant ones who causes problems. What I have noticed in the last 20 years or so, with so many people having spent time overseas, or new immigrants, that drivers are more willing to lets others into their space...something they learned from other countries.
One bad behaviour I have noticed - in the '70's and '80's with a lot more bikes on the road, when lane splitting cars in front would move over, allowing the bikes through....now they close that gap.

Got my licence in the late 70's and have only ever experienced road rage (if you can call it that) once. Coming off the Harbour bridge I indicate right to change lanes and heard the horn of some other vehicle, the bloke finally got along side and with a finger gesture, he mouthed the words ''are you fucking blind''? which, to be honest, I was blind in my right eye at the time but he didn't give me a chance to respond, as he was in such a hurry, obviously.
Physical Road rage here in NZ is non existent. Everyone would have (at some time) expressed their displeasure at another road user. That's hardly road rage.

Remember many things..
one however was in Chch a while back somebody honking horn and gesturing wildly at me...
for very insignificant nothings......
so I turned of the car and walked over towards offensive 20 some year old wannabee in flash looking sporty something rather...
Asked him calmly what it was he wanted to tell me so urgently....
He wound up his window, and spend all his time turning a rather non descript shade of pale.......
Leisurely restarted vehicle and let the traffic flow reinstate itself....
being 6 foot plus and ugly has advantages.....

Meh, only in the main centres during commuter rush hours really, other than that our so called road rage is quite timid by international standards. There are exceptions to this from time to time, but it's not like we're exchanging gunfire at junctions...
Most of my workdays are spent piloting a big truck in a relaxed fashion, and hey I got my licence in Europe so I receive very little aggro on account of my actions. Even on the odd occasion when someone has wanted to "have a word" it's not been an issue really, well for me anyway.
Poor driving standards, lack of patience and ever busier roads quickly show up the MFFY attitude displayed by a portion of drivers.

Don't worry the feeling will pass and you'll be just like the rest of us pricks out there.
I blame the All Blacks and our rugby mad sideline/armchair referee culture. We're raised thinking we all know best and a bit of biffo served up fixes everything.
Wouldn't say NZ is much worse than UK where I drove for several years, just we have more ferals as a percentage of population here. Funnily enough the last two road rage fights outside my house (and I'm talking about parking up and getting out of cars) have both been by woman drivers with the foulest mouths I've heard outside of a feminist convention. To their credit the guys bailed up in both situations didn't raise a hand although one must have been close to it...
Best thing I ever seen though was a fatty in a little 3 door hatchback go nuts at me for being about to sneak down the wrong way of a one way service lane at 5am in the truck. He was jabberwocky septic slobbering so much his car was rocking side to side. I couldn't help but laugh which didn't improve the situation lol

This happens lots in NZ to if there isn't a heap of lemmings in the fast lane doing 80k in their cages...

Quite correct. Road rage here exists but is in its pure form, rare. You wanna see road rage? Visit West Africa and ride up to an intersection where you have the right of way but it is about to be contested by a bunch of ganja-smoking trigger-happy teens with AK47s. Let's just say - no contest. Y'all win, and have a good day now.
Rule Two of overseas postings; never argue with a man with an AK47. (Rule One is of course: never argue with a woman with an AK47.

its not nice of you to refer to me as fat bastard, its not my fault, firstly me mudder didn't let me suck the tit long enough and now i hear that her leaving me to bawl myself to sleep as a baby has given me a psychological complex which is obviously why i have no control over what i shove down my throat. add to that the fact that Jimmys pies are just so damned good and now you may understand why i may appear to be over weight. it just so hurts my feelings when i get referred to as fat or fattie and now i just have to go and eat another pie to try and dispell those feelings of anxiety that you have created by referring to me as fat

I guess it isn't the out and out road rage "pull over and go ballistic" or ram someone road rage.
It is the tacit, near constant, fuck everyone else on the road that winds me up.
Sure London was congested as hell and driving was frustrating, you still let people in and showed courtesy. There was a common shared frustration of all in this together.
Here in NZ, everyone is fighting to get there "first", even if that doesn't mean fast. It just means that by passing the guy on the motorway, you've explained to him that his penis is shorter and you're on your way back from shagging his missus. And this winds him up.....
Anyway - I'm aware that I ride a mean, loud, black thou that roars about town all day.
I am always first to wave cars out and pedestrians over the road. After-all, turn of the wrist and the delay is forgotten about! What top gear used to call the "Christian motorist"
You see on their face the comprehension that, actually, I'm a nice guy who is enjoying his bike. Not an out and out cunt caring about nothing to reach his prize first. They look confused, then happy - it is a nice feeling. Try it!

Was nearly going to start its own thread about this....
This is the end my friend... the end of the cycle users as a special road group. There's been a few incidents lately in news, some involving cyclists assaulting other road users and other stuff, now this...
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11469951
"An angry cyclist yanked the keys from a pensioner's ignition and took off in a bizarre road rage incident, leaving the man and his wife stranded in peak-hour traffic in Auckland's CBD.
John Goodman and his wife Jocelyn, both 69, were heading to the Auckland Town Hall to see a performance of the Symphony Orchestra on Friday night when they were confronted by a man on a bike.
Mr Goodman said he turned from Queen St onto Mayoral Dr on a green light but traffic was heavy and he did not get all the way through the intersection before the light turned red."
"
Auckland road policing manager Acting Inspector David Hines said no road user should take matters into their own hands.
"If they witness bad driving then use the *555 and roadwatch if it's not an emergency," he said.
"In this instance if the cyclist took exception to the intersection being blocked he should have reported the matter using *555. It is an offence for a motorist to enter a blocked intersection which comes with a $150.00 infringement fee."
He said if identified the cyclist could be charged with theft for taking Mr Goodman's keys.
"He has no legal right to remove keys from the vehicle. I would strongly urge members of the public to avoid these situations and report them to police for follow up," he said.
"If anything the cyclist has made the situation worse as Mr Goodman has not been able to move his vehicle and caused further traffic congestion to road users. He has also put Mr Goodman at risk stuck in the intersection."

I know a lot of cyclist piss of other road users, but this is a bit much:

We're now well into the Go Pro / Youtube generation, with people flooding the internet with their (often trivial) road rage experiences.
One common theme in clips from here and overseas, is the lack of courtesy shown to others, by supposed road rage "victims" who then post their self-righteous videos online. Very common is the active blocking of others who are attempting to merge or change lanes, with the resulting "road rage" posted for our viewing pleasure.
Pfffft, you guys need to travel more. It's in nz like every other country but no worse than most. You yourself are probably just more sensitive to it rather than forgetting about lifes occasional dickheads and getting on with it :bleh:

I ride with this in mind:
Right of way isn't something you have, it's something you're given
And when I'm riding home from work, on the last leg up Mokoia Rd, I always flick my lights to show the Birkenhead Busses that they can come out into the road ahead of me. And, I'm pleased to say, they always flash their hazard lights in thanks.

As above..I put myself in that persons shoes who's trying to get out.
We all have places to be, I'm happy to take half a second off my travel time to let someone in who has been there for potentially 5-10 min
The thing that grinds my gears are the people who tail gate to prevent merging like a zip..causing more traffic to build up
