Things to see in London for auto enthusiasts?

I'm going on a wee European holiday and will spend a few days in London at the end of the month.

Was wondering if any KBers who have lived or visited there have recommendations for things to see for those interested in cars & motorcycles (especially classics) and also civil and military aviation?

Already have the Imperial War Museum on the list along with Brooklands. Any tips appreciated :)

RAF Museum at Hendon. (This is compulsory - NO negotiations are entered into!).
On the tube up to Colindale station and then a quick walk. Allow the full day for a visit.

Check at the desk that there is still the free re-visit entry. This will cover the second day.:blip: It's that bloody good!



Don't bother with the London eye. Walk up to the very top of St Paul's though.

Get a deckchair and spend an hour or two watching the traffic on Park Lane.

Like many museums go to their website first and buy tickets online... you'll save money that way and that goes for just about anywhere you want to go...

Catch the train to Cambridge and then bus to Duxford air museum (or you could drive its right by the M1).
Seriously budget a whole day to see the place properly and you MUST go, its epic and you wont be disappointed. I visited the place about three times while living over there. Go to Duxford village afterwards for awesome pub dinner.
Imperial war museum is good, the blitz simulators where you go in underground shelters is well worth queing for, skip the third floor its all holocaust stuff and bit depressing really.
In London find a café near a main route and just giggle and all the lunatics commuting on R1s and fireblades doing stupid stuff lol, engine sounds reverberate nicely off all the stone buildings.
Drive across the Dartford bridge and tunnel and terrify your self on the toll gate approach, prison rules apply to all lane changes, do not brake early....

You will run out of days. IF you have time, get the train to Peterborough and then Taxi to Santa Pod Dragway. If you can get there on a meeting day that is. Top class international meets with all the big budget boys on anything that can be made to go stupidly fast.

Nope. Not until the AAM is back in business (Spring 2016). That part of the museum is closed until October due to updates and a re-shuffle.

Not air or road but Greenwich is a great place to spend a day - catch a ferry down the Thames and visit the Observatory, the Maritime Museum and Old Naval college - fascinating

When I was growing up in the UK - I got the chance to Fly to Duxford - we got to park the Robin next to the Sally B

Classic. I am half deaf due to spending my teen years at Santa Pod. Not sure it reaches US drag standards but a bloody good time all the same.

Was gutted when I was in that London a while back to get to Brooklands (after a traffic jam on the M25) just in time for it to close, through the fence it looked quite amazing (not every day you see a parked Concord) got to see the famous banking though so not a complete loss.

Some things above would have been good to know about before I went.
