Had a 'fund' raising thought earlier and sat on it for a while.. then PM'd someone about it and looked for 'inspiration', but fell short (you're forgiven ;)), so I thought I'd look to the masses.

The idea? A calendar of KBers' bikes for 2006. No idea on cost yet, since I'd have to find out the best printing cost and then unit cost etc, but then the charge would cover the print, and then a portion of the price would go to Spank for this awesome site. Plus, we get to see a sparkly bike each month from KB (Sorry, June is already taken). Shots/bike pics from all over NZ too, not just the auckland crew. Then the name of the KBer and a little on the bike, if anything.

Just an idea for the moment. I have no issues with doing it all too, isn't that hard, or any of the other mac monkeys on here can lend a hand, or make it one big joint effort and get lots of input (but we are on a time constraint don't forget)..

So basically, just wanted some input, or even just the 'yes' button above, so I can get an idea on how many. Poll closes in 2 weeks time, so that things can be given time, if needs be/goes ahead. So far, I think about 200 or so. Print on a gloss/semi-gloss A4 wire bound in landscape, so as you look at it/hang it, the bike is on the back of the month just gone, and the new month hangs below the bike on show..

Doing burnouts on the front step of a church :P

Sounds like a great idea bj. That pic of WT that dave made might fit somewhere quite nicely in it!

What about an overhead shot of heaps of bikes parked up.... could grab my dads digi slr and a big tele lense and get a shot from the skytower or something. Would be hard to do through glass and might not come out that good though... (just a random idea).

Domain/one tree hill and other locations would be good. Some input from the 'other' part of New Zealand for locations around 'their' area too would be good.

Definately a tip top idea IMO. I'm sure Spank and Co could do with some cash to help cover costs.

I'm in. I'm sure between us we could sort out the design/content etc. There's plenty of talented people here.

Let's make it happen.

Spank?

I did try a similar thing last year - but my idea was to have some photos of some KB ladies in a calender.

My idea was as about as popular as George Bush in a kebab shop.

I like the idea and would certainly support it, but... (now don't hate me all at once)

Who's bikes?? I don't want to sound mean or anything, but cruisers, mo'tard etc don't do anything for me. SM, buggy, death et al bikes make me cream my pants (esp when I'm flat on the tank and they breeze past saving their front wheel  )

I wouldn't want to buy a calendar full of cruisers, just not me really... :dodge:

Then again, it would be ridiculous to produce different calendars wouldn't it??

I was thinking along the lines of all bikes, cruisers one month, sprot bikes the other, stunters the next, racers, a few of us 250'ers too ofcourse, large groups of bikes in formation, thrashy/death/loosebruce, etc doing their thing maybe even get a bunch of us all dressed in gear and helmets for a huge group photo.......

250's as well??? :killingme  :killingme That would ruin a beautiful calendar. Or is it only going to be good condition ones... *hello, hello, that's funny, where'd everybody go*

Most of the people here must have started out on 250's if we can get a creative pic that reminds them of their days then that would be great.....

Thinking of having something diff, more personalised to KB as we will be most of the market buying it - not one of those bike calendars for sale for 9.95 at the warehouse with all the studio shots.......

Let the arguments commence......

was thinking a bit more about it last night.
Obviously we have several hundred bikes which we all love, and only 11 months to choose from.

Bigest thing to bear in mind, is we can't let this get too big. Too many chefs, n all that. We don't have the time to form committees to meet each month blah blah, so we'll just have to run with it.

First port of cutting - photo quality. Can't have any old pixilated low quality shot (photos to be scanned can be accepted). So there's one cut there. If the photo isn't quite good enough, then sorry..

Secondly, repeat bikes.. as sexy as they are, the calendar can't be full of 04 636s.. What would be great, is group shots.. get all the 636s together, or all the R1s etc.. So that'll cut a few more down. The chosen shot will be the best of the bunch, so still submit a good shot.

Thirdly, the type of shot. A bike stood there in someones back yard in the pouring rain (unless it's 'art' in which case, you're in the wrong forum) isn't gonna look as sexy as a bike pulling a wheelie with a snow capped Mt Taranaki in the background.. see?

Fourthly, areas - can't have them all from Auckland crews, so I want to keep a good balance of all of NZ.. as best as possible (which will make the cut fairly hard..)

Fifthly, if this is as popular as first appears (hopefully won't just die off) and goes ahead, then we have next year to plan for. No repeats. If your bike makes it this time, then it'll be someone elses turn next time.

Sixthly, who ever is in to help (design wise, not shouting orders) helps to choose, but please refer to the main point at the top.

Seventhly, (lots, huh?) no bitchin

As for printing, I have a few printers I already use thru my work who always loves to bend over for me. He's a good bloke. However, a quote is a quote, and made to be broken. BD has already said he's got a good printer too. I'll put together a quick brief for print specs and we'll get in a few quotes to get the best deal. The printer may be mentioned on the back of the calendar if that'll knock a few bucks off.
The other issue is the print. Printers like to get paid to do their work. Which means I'll be prepared to wear some costs until they're all sold. A 'per unit' cost will be created, and that'll be set. Half will go to the print, the other half goes to Spank. (term 'half' used loosely. Dunno until I find out how much stuff is). hmmmm what else...

23rd September 2005, 09:25
All good points dude. Was thinking that politics will come into this ie 'I cant believe that I was left out when I have contributed soo much!'. This makes me think that you get wellington noobish people to choose some Auckland/CHCH pics and vice-versa. An impartial/naiveish KBer thats going to choose on photo merits. Get more than one person and get them to vote or something. Commitee like.[EDIT]: more like a panel than Comitteeee (Sp)

well like I said, I know (probably not well enough) that people might get the arse ache cos they didn't get their bike in. But, if it goes well, then there's the following year.

I think that the longer serving members will obvisouly get the higher priority over a newbie who's just joined in the last couple of months (sorry guys, but.....). I'd shoot myself if I chose someone who's been here for a month over someone like Hitcher or Death or WT etc, and then the newb decides they've had enough of riding..

And don't forget, it's going to be more about the bikes, than the riders (and all types of bikes, since we're from all walks of prefs). I know it's the riders that makes the site, but at the end of the day, we all love the bikes, ya know? Plus, group shots would get more bikes in than just the one..

I had thought about putting dates on it. But then, do they know what's planned this time next year? If so, then fuk yeah.. bring it on..

A calendar of KBers' bikes for 2006

Good idea. Excellent idea in fact.

It should be a good assortment of bikes, types (a rat bike, a bucket, a Hardly, a chookchaser, BSA Bantam etc etc...not just shiny new ones, 'cos this site includes all kinds of bikers and we can see new shiny bikes in the bike mags anyway) and with a bit of interesting background and preferably with the owner pictured with the bike.Well...except that....anybody know what Winja looks like???? :thud:

well, not every bike will make the cut.. your rat bike probably wouldn't..
but all the dirt bikes jumping would look pretty damn awesome..

and it's not just sprotbikes, it's every style of bike (hopefully), since they're all KB bikes. Hate to put a big head on us, but this is about us.

Anyhoo, just a wee example of what I was thinking the final would look like. Borrowed the awesome artwork of Big Dave, and just threw something together (and yes, I know the dates are wrong). The next bike/month is just a flip over the other side. And wire bound in the middle

What say an emergency services page..

How about some of those Medic bikes I've seen at Puke along with a cop bike or two.

Also you really don’t have much time to get this done. Calendars need to start selling at least a couple of months before the year starts. And with a specialty item like this you don’t have a large potential customer base, so you will need more time than that to make enough sales to make it worth while. From my experience, KB stuff only has limited sales. Once the year starts, sales will just drop off. You might want to consider getting it ready for 2007.

What say an emergency services page.. FF's big yellow truck in the background along with our (Me n RR) white wagons and Nodmans mode of transport.. With our bikes displayed nicely in front all up on racestands like.
could do.. or we could find you a nice trike (http://www.jacksons-camping.co.uk/kidstuff/trike%20images/maxi1.jpg) to thrash about on
could do the ES thing tho, but that'd be an AKL thing.. unless the other areas (or service peeps on KB to be more precise) want to get something sorted out, and then we can have a collage of KB's ES team..

Would Spudchuck and Bykercop wanna pose with their black tinted lids on at either side? GR style..??

I think Spank is right. The selection process will take a while. You need to maybe write out a map/flow chart of the steps involved....time frames etc to see if its feasible.
Having said that I reckon that a limited run, providing its not too expensive, would drum up interest for next year...build up a following. Maybe dont expect much of a return for the first edition and price the 'dars to pay for themselves. Besides, who says you cant release a calendar for June06-June07?

From your experiance? You are the experiance!!
I know about the time constraints. Ain't looking forward to that, so this one might come accross as a bit slap-dash in the end. I'm hoping not. They could easily be ready for December, as long as there are too many fukups. Printing won't take too long, it's just getting the pics in which will be the biggest issue.
If it works, then we can start the 07 one earlier than this. My brain only works in spurts, and I think I'm almost out for the year!!

had thought that, about 12 months from whenever to whenever.. we're non-conformist anti PCs, aren't we..??
The photos will be the hardest/longest period. Aside from that, I'm used to working under pressure, so knocking up a calendar won't take long at all. Printing is only a few days at worst, a few amendments yada yada.. get it all the time. The pics are going to be the hardest thing.

The poll is speaking. It closes in 13 days time. After that, photos will have to pour in for me/us to get it done before Jan 06, else we'll have to go non-PC styleeeeeeeeeeeeeé

I think you can heaps to prepare:
1. Decide what mechanism you are going to use to get/aquire the pics.
2. minimum resolution, what I would call 'submission resolution' (to minimise bandwidth for reviewers and submitters).
3. organise a panel of judges.
4. entry criteria.

Design the calendar after that to suit the pics. Oh and:

5. make it a Microsoft free production.;)

1 - email, mail (for regular pics, but that'll have to be sooner than later), take pics myself/BD/whoever

2 - bloody big. I'll figure that bit out later. But most likely at least 180dpi @ 2600 x 1950 or there abouts. Might get away with a little less, or if it's half of this, could collage a few pics together. So room to work there..

3 - at the moment, it's open to those who want to help. I'm not going to pick people if they don't want to. There's a couple of peeps here I'll possibly ask for their input, since I value their views. But if you want to help, your more than welcome.

4 - outlined in previous posts. As for the style of photos, again, outlined before. Keep in sexy for the bike, and interesting. Not everyone is a pro photographer. That's obvious. It's also not the crit. Just do the best you can, and we'll see what comes thru.

wouldn't mind your input, if it's not too much trouble, but I know what your saying about the numbers.

If Spank is in agreeance, then he and I, and we need a SM chick to absorb our <s>smutty remarks</s> ideas and turn them into something better, which should work to pick out the bikes/photos.

Then the design stage (less is more, the simpler, the better and all that crap) which won't take too long, then print and yada yada..

5 - fukin oath mate.. it will be 100% M$ free. Can't stand that shit

I don't think this needs to be about KB members. It should be for members and others.

We could always have a scout around for "artistic interpretation" ideas: Photographs of bikes and bikers in stunningly scenic settings. Something to aspire to while one pores over a hot keyboard...

if it's not about KB, then what's it about? We're here for the bikes.. I could scout the internet and pick off 12 random bikes from Joe Bloggs' collection.. But I'd rather have the bikes we all know and love from the KB gargre.. including yours Hitch.. ;)

I have some quotes in. Anyone who thinks they could have a good printer who'd like to beat it, PM me and I'll send you the specs of the quote and see if they can better it.

At the moment, the cost per calendar is going to be $10 all up, including shipping anywhere. And half of that goes to Spank. So if all 200 sell, it'll be a nice little donation to Spank for the awesome work he does, so we all have a home (and waste of work)

In respect of pic selection I think you can make a mountain out of a mole hill. If ya wanna be considered then send in your pic to whoever, if it's a shit pic then bad luck, if it's quality then great it'll be on the potential pile. From there it can be whittled down so that we have 12 quality KB inspired pics for a bloody awesome calender. The selector obviously has to be qualified to make the selection & unbiased, chief aim is to produce a KB calender. All IMHO of course!

k, starting to think may be $15 each.. since $10 was kinda based on virtually all selling, which is kinda unrealistic. Also means a little bit extra for Spank too.. $15 still ok...?

Just a thought, how would everyone feel (price to be debated) about the calender including a couple of KB stickers? Just a couple of small ones that you can put on your bike, helmet, car, window, computer monitor, or whatever tickles your particular fancy?

Just thinking that while we are at the printers, if a couple of stickers could be bundled with it that would be great. I know that I would love to have one in the back window of the cage for when I am up at woodhill so that it ID's me to any other KBer's up there . . .

That'd be Spanks decision. The stickers at $5 I think, so it could up the price. The $10 price is based on them all selling. Almost to the cent, half of that is to spank, the other half is printing and shipping. So no room. Which is another reason why I'm thinking $15 is more realistic, else I could be a couple of hundy out of pocket for doing this. $15 would cover that part, and give spank a little more. There's no room for extras unfortunately, but if Spank can get some extras printed for cost, it could be an option.. We'll have to let his Highness decide that part.
Good idea tho

Well - sorry to be harsh, but for examples sake - you actually need to get a lot better shot.

Composition is OK - (if un-dramatic.)

I'd start by getting there so the sun is behind you and the bike not in shadow - because the sky is fully blown out by balancing the bike in shadows.
Use flash if you can't get the sun behind you.

It also needs to be 4 times that resolution to allow for print reproduction.

Good that there is plenty of image to crop for shape but there is a beautiful city there too - Show more of it.

Sorry to be picky - it's my gig.

yeah, that could work..
The quality would be what you'd pick up in any shop like Whitcouls etc.. I wouldn't let it go for anything less. Thing is, by the time we figure out we've got X amount spare, the year would have started.
I'm starting to think a calendar that starts mid-year might be a better option at the moment. Or possibly an 18 month calendar..?
I've left it a little late really, huh?

anyway, with the numbers looking around 60ish, and I know a few people will buy more than one (such as your good self), and a lot of others aren't going to say yay or nay until they see the finished product (which is fair play), we could potentially be coming close to a hundred. Or I could be delusional

Tell ya what, you'd think someone with a flash bike like that'd shell out a bit for some leather trousers.

Be dead in a couple of hours riding without leathers. Madness!!!

It's a safety issue for me - I take it a bit easier when wearing jeans.

Obviously doesn't work for everyone though, you'd think wearing sneakers would have the same effect on one's desire to pull monos in gale force winds. :Pokey:

I'll be keen on a copy - especially if Jimbo, master photographer gets some shots in there.

The gallery appears to be broken, but anything I've put in there is fair game. Perhaps most would be suitable for small piccies, but take them if you can get in there. If it does get fixed any time soon, I'll look through all my pics and select the best ones for ya all.....

Also, anything in my gmail account is fair game. Everything has been taken with a 4MP digicam, and is larger than the dimensions mentioned (as far as I can recall...)

Fuckin' good idea... count me in!

We've got some photographers here, some good lookers and some that I'd love to meet - even by proxy. Pics of owners and bikes. group shots and some other fun aspects of motorcycling. Photos of events attanded (cold kiwi etc).

Make 'em the normal calendar size and you should have room for some montages - have a few theme pages with all the piss up pics on one page, ride pics on another etc...)

I can't help with the layout etc but may know some in the printing trade if I pull some strings - am happy to help co-ordinate things.

anyone who thinks they might be able to get a cheaper quote for the print, please PM me. I've stupidly left the brief at home, but when I get back later, I'll PM back the specs which I've been supplied a price at. Then you can go off, find out for me, then get back. The winner - the cheapest. easy, huh? ;)
And the quality has to be top notch, not someone's photocopier at work..

Sniper
26th September 2005, 12:18
Surely one of our resident KB's could do it for us at a discounted price.

bugjuice

I've got a quote from the printer I use, who's also a mad biker, so he's discounted it as a favour he owes me. But, to be fair, I thought I'd throw it out to the masses, just to be sure that we get the best bang for buck. If we do, then great.
Like I said, anyone who PMs for the quote, I left it at home (sorry!), so it'll be later that I get back to you on that.

Could you all start thinking about photos for this please? I'll outline a brief fairly soon if this is to go ahead. Please don't start flinging them around KB land just yet, or PM/emailing me with them. I will say what to do as part of the brief.

Just keep it at the back of your head while you're out riding your nice shiney machines, and as you pass a nice spot, have a think (but keep your eye on the road!) if it'd make a nice shot or not..

If this is to go ahead, I will post the brief soon enough. But we won't have a lot of time for shots and subissions.. Just want to stress that now.

If it's such a success as early indications show, then this could be an annual thing till we get sick of it (which would hopefully be never)

thanx again guys (and galls!)
