Hi Guys, I just bought my first bike, is a Harley 2000 xl883, I have been hearing different opinions about fuel so my question: is unleaded 91 ok for this bike? what could happen if load another fuel? is that gonna blow the engine?

Thanks guys

I believe Harly Davidson shares the same engine from John Deere tractors. Diesel should work just fine.

+1 for diesel.

Make sure your Road user Charges are up to date though.

Haha! 91 is fine unless you raise the compression ratio, when it's better to go to 95 or 98.

You won't hurt the engine regardless except if you used the Ethanol blend.

You may not notice any difference though if you did try a higher octane fuel.

As Mr Bear said, 91 wil be fine - 98 theoretically might make it a little quicker - but I don't believe most of us would notice the difference .. especially on a harley, which are not known for perfomance ...

On 91, a Harley will still make the potato potato potato potato potato noise.

On 98, a Harley upgrades to a much tastier kumara kumara kumara kumara kumara noise.

His rep weight is still in it's infantile stage, no match for my 863 every click.

I called in to see him and talk over a few things, no evidence anywhere of a bike, and as he got up off his chair I noticed the imprint, while not overly shocked by what I saw, I just had to capture the moment, explains a lot... but I had to leave soon after.

You're confused about the implications of the octane number; a higher octane basically means that the ignition 'wave' advances more slowly through the fuel/air mixture, so IF the engine has been modified to run at a higher compression ratio, you can/must run a higher octane fuel to prevent pre-ignition, or 'knocking'. If the engine has not been modified, running a higher octane fuel will make no difference, except maybe slightly reduced power, and a slightly bigger hit to your wallet.

You can baa all you want, twice as rep per post? not really when you average it out.

My total post count is 26823, so the equation isn't quiet right, rep can be given for all posts, an average of 31 per post.

Your total post count is 10309, an average of 20 per post.

Mine runs fine on 91 95 or 98.

If I am spanking along I try to fill it with 95 or 98. Technically the bike retards the ignition if it detects any preignition espcially with the lower octane fuel, the result is the bike backs off the power to protect the motor.

I find the many of the jap bike riders here are just Harley tyre kicking trolls.

Detonation you mean Flip. Octane is a fuels measured resistance to detonation
Pre-ignition is caused by glowing deposits of carbon at the edge of the combustion chamber igniting the fuel prior to the spark occurring. this can lead to detonation in some instances but it is different.

As you were.

Having a sense of humour doesn't necessarily make you a troll, it just probably means you don't ride a Harley and/or don't take yourself to seriously.

Gull at least are upfront about adding it to their 98 blend (Force 10). Some of the servos chuck a bunch of fancy additives to 98 that are good for your engine, they are meant to clean out some of the gunk and what not. Not sure how much is just the marketing and how much of a difference it makes.

Some Mobil stations have/had improvised signs announcing that there was ethanol in the fuel. That makes it a guessing game now. Does no sign mean that there is no ethanol or just no sign?

C'mon now, the correct story is that Z have put in a bid for Caltex, commerce commission approval pending. Bit like that Rachel Hunter ad from yonks ago, it won't happen overnight but it will happen...

And even when the biodiesel comes online from Z, it'll be merely a drop in the bucket so to speak.
