Hello everybody, from a sunny Holland.
I’m Rick, 24 years young and I’m from Holland (yeah that small country on the other side of the globe :D ). The reason I’m sniffing around on kiwibikers is probably nothing new to you; I’m hoping to make an epic trip to/in your beautiful country.
I will be making a thread in the ‘coming to NZ’ subforum, since I do have some questions.
About me; Was a car mechanic, but my passion is with bikes. Currently worked myself into a technical office job, it's nice to have most of your energy left after a days work, but it's kinda boring as well. Would love a more action-packed job, that's why I’m applying for a job as Loadmaster at the Dutch Airforce atm.
Started my motorcycle license when it was legal, before my car license. Got myself a bandit 600 ‘97, did some weekends to Germany (Holland has NO mountains/curves whatsoever, gets boring very soon), I was sold pretty quick. I’ve been to England and Scotland with it, got the travelbug, I was doomed pretty quick.
Rebuilded my Bandit in a winter. Bought a GSXR750 ‘91, which was the most ugly streetfighter you’ve ever seen, but it was cheap. Fitted the GSXR750 engine, complete front end and complete rear end into my bandit. Has a bit more spice now and it looks badass :D

Last year, bought a DR650RSE ’91 and went to the Northcape in Norway. Was on the road for 4 weeks… Epic, awesome and beautiful country. You can place your tent anywhere you want there (disclaimer: as long as it’s 150m from private property), build a fire, enjoy a beer and enjoy the view. Never thought I would say this, but learned that -with the right surroundings- I even like hiking o.O

I’ve been wanting to go to NZ since I googled the country after seeing the LOTR (very original, I know) and drooled over my desk. And now, I might have an opportunity to go!
As mentioned, I am currently in a selection run with the Dutch Airforce. Where the time between tests is quite extensive (next test = early oct). Meaning my timing will be quite tight. However, if all goes well, I will have about 6 weeks between my current job and the start of my military training. What is a better way to spend these 6 weeks than driving around NZ…
Nothing is certain yet (atm, it’s just an idea), since the selection is pretty hard, still got 3 rounds to go. But IF this works out, I want to know what im going to do. Since I will not have allot of time between signing my contract at the airforce and leaving for NZ. It will be around late nov-dec-very early jan, this year.
With everything I read on this forum, I will have to decide between a buy-back deal with a dealer or buy a bike on trademe.co.nz and sell it afterwards. Renting for about 5 weeks will be insane.
The second has my preference, cause it gives me the chance to pick my own bike (I like the bit-older loads-of-character bikes over the new/flashy bikes when ‘I’m going on an adventure!’) and it’s probably more budget-friendly. However the feeling of not being able to sell my bike (or getting ripped off hard, cause I HAVE to leave), when I’m leaving, gives me a bit of the creeps.
I’m trying to gather as much info as possible from old threads from other travelers, I’ll try not to ask questions I could have figured out myself ;) . So far, the KB forum seems like a place full of friendly bikers. So if you’re up for a Dutchie visiting, maybe show me around a bit, drink a beer somewhere or perhaps willing to help with buying/selling my bike in NZ. Let me know, it would be very appreciated!
