Has anyone here got one?, or used one?.

I've been watching a few ewe tube videos filmed by cameras on drones and some of the footage is absolutely stunning. I imagine it would be a fairly expensive hobby to get into.

Not as expensive as you might think. I've had a few mates into it, get good gear to start with (thus avoiding future feature creep) and you'll snap a few rotors/arms perhaps, but it's not that hard to get the hang of.

I think you can get decent kit (exc camera) for about a grand.

Just been browsing on turd me, prices seem to run from a couple of hundred up to 3 or 4 grand. The cheaper ones seem to have a short fly time and range, but that's to be expected I guess.

Inlaw has one and it takes a clear as video, has good range - like its outta sight but you can see where your going on screen, his came with spare rotors etc I think he paid $1200. Has a nice come home feature if batt etc gets low, (you orientate it where you are before you fly it away).

You can get a DJI phantom or similar for around a grand and then spend some more on a tricky monitior and it will only be able to mount a GoPro on a gimbal. Around 2K all up. If you want a DSLR, you will have to spend at least 2K on a bigger drone and obviously an expensive camera

A couple of friends of mine has DJI Phantom series, you can get them at fairly good price at PB Tech (http://www.pbtech.co.nz/index.php?p=search&sf=dji+phantom) (just wait for their sale).

Just be aware that the Completely Against Aviation (CAA) fuckwits have chucked out a few rules for operating these. If the drone is out of your visual sight they get pissy. Even more so when near an airport.

Occasionally it may malfunction... then it goes for a swim or crashes, you lose it.... yeup, then it will get expensive.

Best to brush up on the laws as aviation related stuff gets serious fast.

it is a fuck sight worse in OZ with the rules, esp if any poor bastard wants to make money from aerial photography.
Be like that soon here too.

Why buy a drone to look at one....?

I'd like one but there's just about nowhere interesting you can legally fly one now without screeds of paperwork days in advance.
Looked at them awhile back, like anything you get what you pay for.
Its interesting that drones with cams have been out for quite awhile but the govt has only reacted once activists have started using them to catch corporate pollution and other things.
Also its pretty hard to stage false flag events if a significant amount of the population has footage of what really happened somewhere.
There's a lot for cool places on DOC land that I'd like to film from different view but doubt they would give permission.
But it makes you wonder why they regulate this but not fireworks and other dangerous home activities.
I'd be more worried about my neighbour having a welding gas explosion than his drone landing on me sunbathing.

Dont think drones would be very popular over there, most likely to come back full of bullet holes :shifty:

Very popular indeed. Price is a bit hefty $40M tho.

I had thought of the footage you could get along somewhere like the west coastline could be interesting. Flying one around an urban area would be a receipe for disaster. Like many toys, after 6 months and a few crashes, it would probably end up on a shelf in the garage unless you had a specific purpose for one.

Unfortunately it's the dickhead minority who are responsible for causing the draconian rules.

You've seen Dan Bilzerian drone shooting? The sky has about a dozen flying around and the AR's are getting rather heated barrels!

Those big fast repeating paint-ball guns would be interesting as an anti-drone ack ack experience! :ar15: - - - :kick:

Just typed in "shooting down drones" on you tube, returned 18,900 results.:wacko: I presume most would be about military type drones.

Here's a drone clip for all you perverts.

I have been flying and filming with multirotors for a few years now. I currently have two Dji phantoms with gopros and gimbals and was just about to buy the latest model when the CAA NZ came out with with it's latest rules, which are just about the strictest in the free world.

You cannot now legally fly over public property, private property, at night, out of sight, without permission, yada yada yada. A total knee jerk, power Nazi, over reaction to a minuscule problem here in NZ.

If you are still interested despite all the 'legislate and fuck em' bollocks above, it is a great little hobby and a couple of hundred $ will get you something simple and robust to practice with.

My personal favourite is the DJI Phantom3 advanced, amazing technology but easy to fly. None of these 'drones' are fool proof however, if you're keen, research online owners groups for all the info you'll ever need.

Cheers

But .... NO legislation to say you cannot shoot them down if one overflys your property.

There is no such beast as a lion roaming Taranaki,, The last one was killed by that dentist bloke from Stratford. He used one of these,(since banned)

Yeah I read that at the time but the laws about guns are a bit different here. Firing any gun in a built up area is going to cause problems.
As Marty said, the Govt reaction was knee jerk overkill.

It'll cause problems for the Real estate agents and other people who were planning to use them for comercial purposes. Do the Search and Rescue people have to run around getting permission before searching? I guess if worm farming is dangerous and cattle farming isn't, anything is possible.
